Letter:

Lynchburg, Va

June 1856

Mr. Wesley Wyatt, Richmond Va

  Dear Sir,

With this note you will receive a silver cup with the

inscription To GEORGE MURRELL WYATT

From GEORGE M. MURRELL

It is a testimony in the name of our Son

to unknown strangers for the complement

of the names given      And the father & mother of

G. M. MURRELL asks the acceptance of the cup

in the name of GEO. MURRELL WYATT by his parents

as an evidence of regard     At the same

time we hope you will allow us to express the

belief without offense, we are somewhat indebted

for the complement to Mr. JOSEPH S. RAINES who is

& has been for years in our family & who we

regard & treat as a true friend

I promised Mr. RAINES to call on you, but the pressing

nature of the business connected with the settlement

of the estate of my brother, the late JNO. D. MURRELL of this place

would not allow me to call at Richmond

I regret this fact, because it deprives me of forming an

acquaintance with the brother in law & sister above

that I hold in high esteem and look upon as

a true gentleman & an honest an upright

man & Christian.  I speak this not as a complement

- but as a truth – My visit to Va at this time was

quite unexpected.  I did not, twelve hours before I

left home, contemplate being here till fall

Urgent & unexpected news caused me to leave home

Suddenly  Mr. RAINES did not know of my intended

visit until it was too late for him to write you

He is in fine health & I believe satisfied with

his home – I may if I have time, pass through

Richmond, if so – I will certainly give you a

call – I shall necessarily be detained here yet

for several week.

                                      With respect I remain

                                      Your (unknown) friend

                                      O. G. MURRELL

                                      of Madison County

                                      Mississippi
