IMPORTANT ENOUGH TO BE SHARED WITH OTHERS.
DESCRIPTION: No date on title page, but appears to be from the early 1800's.
Embossed leather cover has considerable wear, and spine has been completely
taped with icky black electrical tape, but could possibly be repaired by an
expert. At least it has held the book together all these years. It is a large
Bible, measuring about 9" x 11 1/3", and is almost 3" thick. Many
of the pages are stained by water or some other liquid, and discolored from
age, but otherwise are in pretty good shape with usual wear. Some of the pages
are separated from the spine, including one of the family record pages. The
family pages are slightly faded, but are more legible than they appear in the
images below. Here are the different family names mentioned in the Family
Record section:
The family seems to descend from WILLIAM SLOCUM born Nov 4, 1791 [Duchess County, NY]-died Sept 4, 1866. Married on Oct 5, 1817 to ABIGAIL ASHBY born Sept 14, 1788 [Fishkill, New York]-died Nov 16(?), 1861. [They moved to Scipio Twp, Cayuga County, NY before 1850. He was a Pvt in the War of 1812-15th Regt US Infantry. He's buried at Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Union Springs, NY]. Others named include:
MARY SLOCUM b.March 30, 1818-d.Jan 16, 1887 [lived in Canoga, NY in 1882, probably single].
SUSAN SLOCUM b.July 4, 1821 married on Jan 1, 1839 to PHILLIP W. HOFF [lived in Union Springs, NY in 1882].
CAROLINE SLOCUM b.Sept 9, 1823-d.Sept 18, 1903, married on Nov 27, 1855 to ISAAC BILBY. [Lived in Hoyt's Corners, Seneca Co, NY in 1882].
ABIGAIL SLOCUM b.Nov 20, 1825 [Fishkill, NY] married on Aug 2, 1856 to ASHBEL W. CARR. [Lived in Union Springs after marrying, no children]
BETSY [Elizabeth] ANN SLOCUM b.Oct 25, 1827-d.Aug 25, 1842 [Union Springs, NY].
CHARLES ASHBY SLOCUM b.Feb 4, 1833 married on Apr 19, 1867 to MARY E. CRANE [Lived in Auburn Co, NY].
WILLIAM JAMES SLOCUM b.Nov 19, 1830 [Scipio, NY] married on May 3, 1857 to ANGELINE McKENNA. [They lived at Forest Home, Tompkins Co, NY]
JOHN RUSSEL SLOCUM b.Mar 11, 1849-d.July 12, 1915, married on Mar 6, 1872 to ANNA S. HELMSTEDTER died Mar 14, 1922.
CHARLES J. SLOCUM b.Aug 4, 1883 married on June 4, 1911 to HATTIE BELLE CASE.
