George Frederick Tall Bible, Frederick, Maryland

Antique Bible, dated 1889, printed by the American Bible Society, New York, 1889. I no longer own this Bible, which I bought in an antique store, but thought someone may find this information useful.

Inside the front cover is written: “Charles A. Tall, Frederick City, Maryland.” On the inside of the back cover is written: “Charles Augustus Tall 37 ____ Street, Frederick City, Maryland.” Then on the page after page 616 is the Family Record page which has this information:

There are also newspaper articles and notes that have been cut out and placed inside the Bible, giving more clues to who this family was. It appears this was an African-American family. One of the articles is from the Afro-American [newspaper], Baltimore, Saturday, March 2, 1929: “Miss Harriette Tall of Frederick, Md., Sophomore in Storer College, W.Va., was the weekend guest of the Rev. and Mrs. E. M. Mitchell.” And also, an obituary: “Charles W. Tall, colored, died at the residence of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Tall, corner Bentz and DeGrange street, this city, Thursday night, of consumption, aged 31 years and 18 days. The deceased was a barber by trade and had lived in Harrisburg, Pa. …… Services will be held at Asbury church and internment at Greenmount cemetery.”

I’ve tried to find out more about this family. This is what I’ve found, but further research will need to be done to prove that this info is on the same family: 1910 Census, Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, I found a George Tall, age 35 born in Maryland, with a wife named Cora (age 28, born in MD) and son Harry (age 11 born in MD). Also found a Jennie Tall who was born Jan 22, 1884(?) and died in 1968 in Lakewood, Ocean City, New Jersey. Her Social Security Card was issued in Maryland. Also found a George F. Tall (colored) who is buried at the Lebanon Cemetery, Chambersburg, PA. He was in the U.S. Navy and died May 8, 1918 at age 80. He is possibly the same George F. Tall whose name appears on the rolls of the 30th Regiment, United States Colored Infantry. This regiment was raised at Camp Stanton, Maryland in 1864. Again, these are just bits and pieces of info that may or may not be related to the family in the Bible.
