James Thomas Howard's name appears on the original roster of Company K dated August 20, 1861 when it was activated into the 26th Regiment of the NC State Troops.� He re-enlisted May 10, 1862 at age 25.� He was 5 Ft. 8 1/2 in tall and had black hair, gray eyes and a fair complexion.� On September 15, 1862, he was admitted to the Episcopal Church Hospital at Williamsburg VA with Rubella.� Released for duty on October 14, 1862.� Wounded at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. The wound at Gettysburg was diagnosed as "Vulerus Sclopet" and eventually caused his death. Admitted to the Hospital (Richmond General #9) July 15, 1863. Transferred to CSA General Hospital in Danville, VA July 16, 1863.� He deserted the hospital August 18, 1863 and returned to the battlefield. He was captured Apr. 3, 1865 at Appomattox River and was sent to Hart's Island POW Camp, NY Apr. 11, 1865. Took the Oath of Allegiance to the U.S. and was released June 19, 1865. His name was placed on the honor roll. On September 24, 1886, he was admitted to Broughton Hospital, Morganton, North Carolina (Moved there from Goodman, NC).� At this time he was 49 years old and they had 10 children.� He remained in the hospital until his death on June 5, 1893. He was buried in the hospital cemetery, Grave 29, Row S. |
