Dudley Daniel Diggs' father was Andrew Moorman Diggs, who was born Dec. 11, 1815 in Anson Co., and died between 1845 and 1850, probably in Yalobusha Co, Mississippi, near Big Creek, in what is now Calhoun and Chickasaw Counties. There were many epidemics, including Yellow Fever, in that area at the time. He was married about 1832 to Morning Rebecca Hinson, who was born Dec 25, 1812 in Anson Co., and died Dec. 6, 1883 in Shady Hill, Henderson Co., TN, the daughter of Bartlett and Harriet Hinson of Anson County, NC.

Andrew Moorman Diggs left Anson Co. before 1840 with a large party of other Ansonians, (including his father), that settled in Henderson, Carroll, and Henry Counties of West Tennessee. His wife Morning Rebecca Diggs remained in Anson Co. with her two young children, Dudley and Elizabeth.  Elizabeth P. Diggs married on July 18, 1858 to Darling A. Pond, the son of Sprattly Simmons Pond. She eventually lived in Henderson and Madison Counties, TN, and Tupelo, MS.

Andrew M. Diggs was probably planning to send for his family as soon as he had cleared a homestead for them. But, for whatever reason, he and another large group from West Tennessee left there and headed south to Mississippi before 1845, settling in Yalobusha Co., in the area that later was divided into Calhoun and Chickasaw Counties, which is the last place of record for him. He went there with his father, Dudley Diggs, (Sr.), who was born about 1775 in Anson Co., and died sometime after 1860 near Pittsboro, Calhoun Co, MS.

Dudley Diggs (Sr.) had been married at least 2 times. His first wife, and the mother of Andrew Moorman Diggs, was Lucy Moorman (b.c.1787, d.c.1817), the daughter of Andrew Moorman (b.1759, d.Nov. 5, 1807 Richmond Co, NC) and Jane Bounds (b. Jun. 26, 1759-d.after 1850 Chesterfield Co, SC). Dudley Diggs' 2nd wife was Catherine McRae, the daughter of Daniel McRae. She died before 1841.

The known children of Dudley Diggs' first marriage were Andrew Moorman Diggs, and John Diggs (b. May 4, 1808, d. Oct 26, 1836). The children of Dudley Diggs' 2nd marriage were Margaret Diggs, Celia Diggs (married Samuel Cox in 1839 in TN), Lucy Jane Diggs (b.1833, married Patrick M. Hudgins in 1859 in MS), and Daniel Dudley Diggs (b.1836, who lived in Carroll Co, MS in 1880).

Dudley Diggs, (Sr.) was the son of Sheriff Marshall Diggs (b.c. 1734, d. 1831 Anson Co, NC) and Anne Snead. Even though Marshall Diggs did not name Dudley in his will, which he wrote on Sept. 9, 1816, he did give Dudley 70 acres of land on Jones Creek, Anson County, in a deed dated Sept. 7, 1816. He apparently gave Dudley this land in lieu of an inheritance. Dudley did not register this deed at the Courthouse, and it was not until 1835, after Dudley had sold this and 8 other tracts of land to Robert C. Hattaway, and then this Hattaway was selling the land, that the deed was acknowledged (deed book Z, page 304). This is the only proof thus far, that Marshall is the father of Dudley.

Sheriff Marshall Diggs (b.c.1734 VA) was the son of Marshall (b.c.1680 VA) and Sarah Degge of Louisa Co, VA.

Marshall Degge was the son of John Degge (b.c. 1640, d.Aug 28, 1726), who immigrated to VA from Staffordshire, England in 1674. He settled in the area that is now Mathews Co. VA, where there is a small town by the name of Diggs. His father, Isaac Degge, was the brother of Sir Simon Degge, Knight, who remained in England. Isaac married Rose Marshall.

Although conclusively proven to not be related to the Diggs family of Col. Dudley Diggs of VA, who's line can be traced to Kent, England, the Degge/Diggs family of Anson Co., NC is descended from

Thomas Degge of Strongshall, County Stafford, England, near Uttoxeter, who's lineage can be traced back to Hugh Degge, (1377-1399) of Stramshall, England.
