OUR RHYNE FAMILY HISTORY
(North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Germany, Switzerland)
EARLY RHYNE HISTORY

Martin Reinau, Lewis Lineberger, Peter Hoyle, John Hoffman, Sebastian Best and most of the other German fathers who settled in and around Gaston and Lincoln Counties, NC, and were considered "Pioneers" to the area, came from the upper or southern Rhine region of Germany, near or from the Palatine country adjacent to Switzerland.

The Rhennish Province provided comfortable living for the inhabitants, except spiritually. In an almost solid Catholic country, the adherents of the new doctrine of Martin Luther (Lutherans) were being persecuted. Seeking protection, they fled to England and Holland.

The Queen of England, desiring to settle the colonies in America with a good class of citizens, sent them in their ships to PA. They did not stay there very long, but following the range of the mountains, by way of Indian trails, they moved from around York Co, PA to NC, which was then pretty well settled east of the Yadkin River. They pushed on beyond the settlements, crossing the Catawba River, and settled on Upper Hoyles Creek, Lincoln Co, now Gaston Co, NC, near Gastonia and Dallas, in the 1750's and 60's.

The name "Reinau", "Rein" or "Rhine" is a derivative of the Latin word "Rhenus," meaning "pure." Whence came the name of Germany's most historic river, and the name of the inhabitants of her fertile environs. Not until mingling with some Dutch emigrants did the spelling "Rhyne" take effect, like the "Rhyn" delta in Holland, with an "E" added. You will also see other transformations of names; Heyl becomes Hoyle and Glattfelder becomes Clodfelder, the exact times of their changes is not known.

They were civic-minded people, they pioneered roads and railroads, financed English-speaking schools, and were active in the Lutheran churches. Philanthropists, like Moses H. Rhyne, and his son, Daniel Efird Rhyne, left landmarks of churches, and Lenoir-Rhyne College, bearing the latter's name.

Most of the information included here on the early generations was taken from the many books and research already published on the Rhyne and related families. I have compiled information from the different resources to obtain direct lineages for our family. There were some descrepancies between the books, especially in the dates of births of John and Jacob Hoffmans, both Jrs. and Srs.

Berthal Reinau
probably migrated to Germany from the village of Rheinau (see photos below), which is in Switzerland on the Rhine River, north of Zurich. Many other families that left that area migrated to the Palitinate area of Germany.
