Amanda Smith Bates had red hair, which possibly explains her "Smith temper" that Grandma Sudie told me about! She died about June of 1914 “when the plum trees were in bloom” (per her daughter, Sudie Bates Hampton, who was 10 years old at the time).

After Amanda died, Sam Bates married Mary Magdelena "Lena" Johnston. She was born Oct 25, 1892 in Newton Co, GA, and died Nov 22, 1971 in Cobb Co, GA. She is buried in Bates Cemetery. Her sister was Mrs. Myrt Womack, her brother was Troy Milton Johnston.

Grandma Sudie Bates Hampton told me that her father, Sam Bates, used to read a lot of novels, and named his children after characters he read about. Sam also played string instruments, especially the guitar and banjo, and he wrote songs and "had a pretty good singing voice."

Before he married, he went to Arkansas to visit relatives, but didn't like it very much out there, so he went back to Georgia and wrote a song about what a bad place that was!

Sam rented a log cabin from "old man Gaither" after he and Amanda got married. They always lived in Newton County, Georgia. But after Sam and Lena married, they moved to S.C. for a while in the 1920’s. Then by 1937, Sam lived with J.C. Bates in Mansfield, GA, and in 1938 Sam and Lena were living in Atlanta on 432 Windsor St.
