Buried in Notla Cemetery in Murphy, Cherokee County, NC, in the Belleview Section, in front of Notla Baptist Church.

 

Riley Hampton 1st married to LAVICIE (Martha) HUFF in Washington Co, TN in 1860. (Lavicie was the daughter of Joseph and Nancy Huff). They divorced on Oct 25, 1866 in Washington Co, TN.

She had died by 1884.

1.NANCY CAROLINE HAMPTON (Aug 21, 1861-1898), married on Aug 4, 1884 to JOHN WESLEY FORRESTER (born Sept 9, 1862, died March 11, 1947). He was a farmer known as  "Doc". They lived in the Hot House Community of Cherokee Co, NC. They moved quite a bit, even to Texas, but preferred Western NC. Both buried in Shady Grove Cemetery, 10 miles west of Murphy on Shady Grove Rd, left on Hwy 64 W., in front of  Betty's Country Store.

            -EMMA ROZELLE FORRESTER (b.June 7, 1888, d.Nov 14, 1965 Murphy, Cherokee Co, NC at Providence

1860 Census of Washington Co, TN, 4th Civil District (Coxes Store), pg 60-160:

Martha Hampton-40, Riley-22, William F.-17, Marion-15, Wesley-13, Jesse-10, Rachel-22, James-3.

 

Aug 11, 1862-Riley Hampton enlisted in Co B, 4th TN Cavalry-(U.S.) as a teamster. Was commanded by Thomas H. Easley at Cumberland Gap. Was described as having dark hair, dark skin, grey eyes, and stood 5'8" (or 5'9") tall. Former occupation-farmer. Nov 1, 1863 Murfreesboro, TN, "contracted rhuematism from exposure to camp life, from which he never recovered". In Nashville Hospital from about Dec 20, 1863 through Jan 31, 1864. Messed and bunked with an Andrew Baker. Discharged at Nashville, TN on July 7, 1865.

 

1865 – Riley lived in Cleveland, TN making harnesses until Aug 1866 (as per his pension record).

 

1867 or 1869- Riley was a team driver in Ducktown, TN (as per his pension record).

 

1870 Census of Cherokee Co, NC, Notla Township, p.313:

Riley Hampton-34, Susan-23, Mary Ferrel-55 (b.SC), Caroline-8.

 

1880 Census of Cherokee Co, NC:

Riley Hampton-44, Susan-(b.GA) 33, James-8, Wesley M.-5, Martha L.-2, and William H.-1 mo, Mary Ferrel-65 (b.SC).

 

March 7, 1881 - Riley Hampton filed for pension from Notla, Cherokee Co, NC.  Was diagnosed as having chronic rheumatism and received a pension in the amount of $6 per month for his disability. (as per his pension record).

 

1896 Riley sold land to Jill Silay in Cherokee Co, NC.

 

1900 Census of  Notla Twp, Cherokee Co, NC, (Vol 15, E.D.5, Sheet 1, line 81), Murphy-Blairsville Rd.:

Riley Hampton-64 (b.Dec 1835), Susan-56 (b.Oct 1843), William H.-20, Mary E.-17 (b.Dec 1882), Columbus F.-12 (b.Feb 1888). All born in NC.

 

1909 (Nov 8) sold land in Notla Township, 3rd Dist. to Hyram Hampton (?) for $100. (who is this??)

 

1910 Census, Cherokee Co., NC:

Riley-74, Susan-63, Columbus-22.

Married 40 years, she had 6 children, 4 were still alive.

 

April 7, 1915 Riley died.

April 15, 1915 Susan applied for widow's pension in Union Co, GA, and gives her address as Murphy, NC, RFD#2.   

Later, her address was Copperhill, TN, in care of C.F. Hampton.

 

In 1920, Susan Hampton was living with their son Columbus "Lum" Hampton in Fannin, Co GA. He was doing work on an acid plant:

Feb 14, 1926 Susan Hampton died. She had been receiving Riley's pension of $30 per month. (as per his pension record).
