MY HORTON FAMILY
I don’t know much about my Horton’s of Georgia. My
earliest known Horton
ancestor was ELIJAH HORTON. He was sometimes
listed as Elijah “Whorton”
in early records. The first record I’ve found of him
is on August 13, 1813 when he
married NANCY HOLCOMB in Baldwin County,
Georgia. Then, on Feb 10,
1818in Baldwin Co, Georgia he was named as administrator of the estate of John
D. Holcomb. I don’t know who John D. Holcomb
was, but he was probably somehow
related to Nancy Holcomb.
By 1820, Elijah Horton was listed on the census of
Walton Co, GA as Elijah "Whorton".
He owned 3 slaves.
In 1830, the boundaries of Newton Co. changed to
include part of Walton Co., so
in 1830, he is shown on the census in Newton Co.,
again as Elijah "Whorton". His
wife does not show up in his household, so she
must’ve died by then.
He owned 2 slaves.
The 1840 census of Newton Co, GA lists him as Elijah
Horton. He owned 8 slaves.
The 1850 census of Newton Co, GA lists him as Elijah
Horton, age 66, born in Georgia,
with real estate value of $6000.
The 1860 census of Newton Co, GA, P.O.: Newton
Factory, lists Elijah Horton,
age 76, born in Georgia, with real estate valued at
$4000 and personal property
valued at $5950.
Elijah Horton died before Oct 7, 1861 in Newton Co.,
GA, when Letters of
Administration on his estate were granted to William
N. Clark, Henry G. Holcomb,
and William J. Wright, etc.
