This Indenture, made the 25th day of January, A. D., one thousand eight hundred and Seventy three between G. W. FLOW, Probate Judge of the County of Union and State of North Carolina, and his successors in office, of the one part, and B. B. SMITH of the other part, Witnesseth, That the said B. B. SMITH in pursuance of an order of said Probate Judge, made the 25th day of January, 1873, and according to the directions of the Act of Assembly in that case made and provided, doth put, place and bind PERMELIA BRASWELL an orphan, now of the age of Eight years, ___ months, with the said B. B. SMITH, to live after the manner of an apprentice and servant until the said apprentice shall attain the age of Eighteen years; during all which time the said apprentice her master faithfully shall serve, his lawful commands everywhere readily obey; The said PERMELIA BRASWELL shall not at any time absent herself from her master’s service, but in all things as a good and faithful servant shall behave towards her said master.  And the said B. B. SMITH doth covenant, promise and agree to, and with the said Probate Judge that he will teach and instruct the said apprentice, or cause her to be instructed, in the art and business of House Keeping, and in all things pertaining thereto and that he will constantly find and provide for said apprentice during the term aforesaid, sufficient diet, washing, lodging and apparel, fitting for an apprentice; and also other things necessary, both in sickness and in health.  And further, shall provide said apprentice at the end of her apprenticeship with six dollars in cash, a new suit of clothes and a new Bible. And teach her to Read, Write & Cypher.

In Witness Whereof, the parties to these presents have interchangeably set their hands and seals, the day and year first above written.

This Indenture, made the Twenty first day of August, A. D., one thousand eight hundred and Seventy five between S. H. WALKUP, Probate Judge of the County of Union and State of North Carolina, and his successors in office, of the one part, and L. M. LITTLE of the other part, Witnesseth, That the said S. H. WALKUP in pursuance of an order of said Probate Judge, made the 21st day of August, 1875, and according to the directions of the Act of Assembly in that case made and provided, doth put, place and bind MATILDA MULLIS an illegitimate female child of SARAH ANN MULLIS, aged seven years & WILLIAM MULLIS, an illegitimate male child, now the age of about three years, -- months, with the said L. M. LITTLE, to live after the manner of an apprentice and servant until the said female apprentice shall attain the age of 18 years and the said male apprentice shall attain the age of twenty one years; during all which time the said apprentice their master faithfully shall serve, his lawful commands everywhere readily obey; The said MATILDA & WILLIAM shall not at any time absent themselves from their master’s service, but in all things as good and faithful servants shall behave towards their said master.  And the said L. M. LITTLE doth covenant, promise and agree to, and with the said Probate Judge that he will teach and instruct the said apprentices, or cause them to be instructed, in the art and business of housekeeping and farming, and in all things pertaining thereto and that he will constantly find and provide for said apprentice during the term aforesaid, sufficient diet, washing, lodging and apparel, fitting for an apprentice; and also other things necessary, both in sickness and in health. And to teach or cause them to be taught to read, write and cipher to simple rule of three.  And further, shall provide said apprentice at the end of their apprenticeship with six dollars in cash, a new suit of clothes and a new Bible each and to give the girl MATILDA MULLIS one good bed & furniture, cow & calf & to give the said boy WILLIAM MULLIS fifty dollars in money, & to pay the costs of ----------[illegible].

WALKUP in pursuance of an order of said Probate Judge, made the 22nd day of April, 1875, and according to the directions of the Act of Assembly in that case made and provided, doth put, place and bind AMANDA SIGLEY an orphan, now of the age of Six years, in April 1875, with the said ABRAM CROOK, to live after the manner of an apprentice and servant until the said apprentice shall attain the age of Eighteen years; during all which time the said apprentice her master faithfully shall serve, his lawful commands everywhere readily obey; The said AMANDA SIGLEY shall not at any time absent herself from her master’s service, but in all things as a good and faithful servant shall behave towards her said master.  And the said ABRAM CROOK doth covenant, promise and agree to, and with the said Probate Judge that he will teach and instruct the said apprentice, or cause her to be instructed, in the art and business of House Keeping, and in all things pertaining thereto and that he will constantly find and provide for said apprentice during the term aforesaid, sufficient diet, washing, lodging and apparel, fitting for an apprentice; and also other things necessary, both in sickness and in health & teach her or cause her to be taught to read, write & cypher. And further, shall provide said apprentice at the end of her apprenticeship with six dollars in cash, a new suit of clothes and a new Bible & one cow & calf & Bed & furniture for bed.

FLOW, Probate Judge of the County of Union and State of North Carolina, and his successors in office, of the one part, and SAMUEL STEGALL of the other part, Witnesseth, That the said SAMUEL STEGALL in pursuance of an order of said Probate Judge, made the 17th day of December, 1877, and according to the directions of the Act of Assembly in that case made and provided, doth put, place and bind REBECCA DUNCAN an orphan, now of the age of Four years, Six months, with the said SAMUEL STEGALL, to live after the manner of an apprentice and servant until the said apprentice shall attain the age of Eighteen years; during all which time the said apprentice her master faithfully shall serve, his lawful commands everywhere readily obey; The said REBECCA DUNCAN shall not at any time absent herself from her master’s service, but in all things as a good and faithful servant shall behave towards her said master.  And the said SAMUEL STEGALL doth covenant, promise and agree to, and with the said Probate Judge that he will teach and instruct the said apprentice, or cause her to be instructed, in the art and business of House Keeping, and in all things pertaining thereto and that he will constantly find and provide for said apprentice during the term aforesaid, sufficient diet, washing, lodging and apparel, fitting for an apprentice; and also other things necessary, both in sickness and in health. And further, shall provide said apprentice at the end of her apprenticeship with six dollars in cash, a new suit of clothes and a new Bible. And teach her to Spell, Read, Write & Arithmetic.

HUEY, Probate Judge of the County of Union and State of North Carolina, and his successors in office, of the one part, and JOHN E. KING of the other part, Witnesseth, That the said JAMES C. HUEY in pursuance of an order of said Probate Judge, made the Sixteenth day of March, 1880, and according to the directions of the Act of Assembly in that case made and provided, doth put, place and bind AMANDA KANADAY an orphan, now of the age of 9 years, ___ months, with the said JOHN E. KING, to live after the manner of an apprentice and servant until the said apprentice shall attain the age of 18 years; during all which time the said apprentice her master faithfully shall serve, his lawful commands everywhere readily obey; The said AMANDA KANADAY shall not at any time absent herself from her master’s service, but in all things as a good and faithful servant shall behave towards her said master.  And the said JOHN E. KING doth covenant, promise and agree to, and with the said Probate Judge that he will teach and instruct the said apprentice, or cause her to be instructed, in the art and business of House Keeping, and in all things pertaining thereto and that he will constantly find and provide for said apprentice during the term aforesaid, sufficient diet, washing, lodging and apparel, fitting for an apprentice; and also other things necessary, both in sickness and in health.  And further, shall provide said apprentice at the end of her apprenticeship with six dollars in cash, a new suit of clothes and a new Bible. In re: AMANDA KENNEDY, Ex Parte

To the Sheriff of Union County Greetings:

It appearing to the undersigned Judge of Probate of Union County that AMANDA KENNEDY’S mother is dead and that her father has absconded and left her unprovided for for more than twelve months, and that she is an infant of about the age of nine years and that her moral and mental condition is such to require that she be apprenticed.  You are therefore commanded to take the body of said infant AMANDA KENNEDY and have her before me forthwith to the end that said matter may be inquired into and she may be disposed of as the law directs.  You will also notify SARAH WHITFIELD, the party with whom the said child resides, that she may be present, if she wishes to be.

State of North Carolina, Union County, In the Superior Court – Before the Clerk.

This Indenture, made this 9th day of April, 1900[1] between E. A. ARMFIELD, Clerk of the Superior Court of the County of Union, and State of North Carolina, and his successors in office, of the first part, and J. H. PETTAWAY, of the other part; Witnesseth, That the said E.A. ARMFIELD, Clerk of the Superior Court, in pursuance of the statutes in such cases, made and provided, doth put, place and apprentice ISAIAH VALENTINE, a minor, (being of the age of 9 years, 11 months, 24 days, at the execution of this indenture) unto the said J. H. PETTAWAY as his employer until the said ISAIAH VALENTINE, apprentice, shall attain the age of 21 years, during which time the said apprentice his employer shall faithfully and honestly serve and his lawful commands readily obeyed, the said ISAIAH VALENTINE, apprentice, shall not at any time absent himself of his said employer’s service, but in all things as a good and faithful apprentice shall behave towards his said employer during the period of his apprenticeship.  And the said J. H. PETTAWAY, employer, doth covenant, promise and agree to and with the said E. A. ARMFIELD, Clerk of the Superior Court, that he will, during the term of his apprenticeship, teach and instruct the said apprentice or cause him to be instructed in the art of business of a farmer, and all things pertaining thereto, and that he will constantly provide for said apprentice during the term aforesaid sufficient diet, clothes, lodging and accommodations fit and necessary in sickness and health; that he will teach, or cause to be taught, the said apprentice to read and write and the rules of arithmetic to the double rule of three.

            The said J. H. PETTAWAY, employer, further agrees to pay the said apprentice for his services during the continuance of said apprenticeship as follows:

            For the first year, ending on the 15th day of April 1906, $4.00; for the second year ending on the 15th day of April 1907, $8.00; for the third year, ending on the 15th day of April 1908, $12.00; for the fourth year, ending on the 15th day of April 1909, $16.00; for the fifth year, ending on the 15th day of April 1910, $20.00; for the sixth year ending on the 15th day of April, 1911, $25.00.

That the money above agreed to be paid for the services of the aforesaid apprentice shall be paid by the said J.H. PETTAWAY, employer, into the office of the undersigned Clerk of the Superior Court of Union County, at the times mentioned above for the payment of the same, to the credit of the aforesaid apprentice.

That the said J.H. PETTAWAY further agrees, during the said apprenticeship, to make an annual report to the said E. A. ARMFIELD, Clerk, as to whether the stipulations in this indenture are being performed or not by him, and also as to the progress and general condition of the aforesaid apprentice, including his moral, mental and physical condition.

            The said J.H. PETTAWAY, employer, also agrees to make a final report to the said Clerk at the conclusion of the said term of apprenticeship herein provided as to whether the stipulations contained in the indenture have been performed or not.
