She died from burns received when an oil lamp,
for no apparent |
|
|
reason exploded.
Also killed by the same fire was Wilma Davis |
|
|
daughter of Rev. A.C. Davis. Lou Baucom,
daughter of Lewis |
|
|
Riley and Margaret Ann Dumas Baucom, was badly burned |
|
|
but recovered. The
young ladies had attended a quilting party |
|
|
at the home of
C.A. Prichard and were preparing to go home. |
|
|
Grace picked up the oil lamp to move it and
it exploded, |
|
|
wrapping her and
Wilma Davis in flames. Prichard and Edgar |
|
|
Baucom were badly
burned while trying to extinquish the |
|
|
flames, which was
done quickly. The girls were burned over |
|
|
most of their bodies and much of the flame
must have been |
|
|
inhaled. Dr Brooks
was summoned and did all he could for |
|
|
the victims. Wilma
died at eight o'clock the next morning and |
|
|
Grace died twenty minutes later. The
funerals were held in |
|
|
Olive Branch with Rev. G.O.
Wilhoit of Ansonville
conducting |
|
|
the service. Wilma Davis is buried at Olive Branch
Baptist |
|
|
