James Thomas Brooks and Martha Emiline Smith and 7 of their 15 children. This photo was taken around 1897 or 1898 in their old homeplace in New Salem. James Thomas was the son of Davidson and Kiziah Malinda Tarlton Brooks, born Nov. 12th,1857 in Union County. Martha Emiline Smith was the daughter of William Valentine Smith and Mary Malinda Shinn, born June 23rd,1865 in Union County. They were married on March 28,1883 in Union County. James Thomas died in Midland, Cabarrus County on March 21st,1929 and Martha Emiline died on August 7th, 1937. They are both buried at Locust Baptist Church Cemetery in Locust, Stanly County, N.C.

Left to Right are-Millard Jefferson Brooks, my grandfather Cias Baker Brooks sitting on lap, James Thomas Brooks, Kiziah Malinda Brooks, Martha Emiline Brooks holding Lydia Aranner Brooks in lap, Brown Wilson Brooks, James Lee Brooks and Roland Alexander Brooks. Their second child up to that point in time had already died. His name was Paul Keesler Brooks born October 27th, 1885 and died on August 7th, 1886. He is buried in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in New Salem, N.C.

Kiziah Malinda Brooks born 3/8/1884 died-4/17/1957 in Union County, N.C. Married Martin Luther Mullis. Buried at Rocky River Truelight Church Cemetery, Union County, N.C.

Brown Wilson Brooks born 1/18/1887-died 2/2/1944 in Mecklenburg County, N.C. Married Grace Mae Allen. Buried at Dulins Grove Advent Christian Church cemetery, Allen Station, Mecklenburg County, N.C.

Millard Jefferson Brooks born 3/31/1889, died Nov. 1905 in Union County, N.C. at the age of 16 due to an accident. He is buried at the Old Brooks Cemetery in New Salem, Union Co., N.C.

Roland Alexander Brooks born 7/25/1890 and died 1/25/1968 in Midland (Cabarrus County), N.C. Married to Beatrice Green and buried at Bethel Methodist Church cemetery, Midland (Cabarrus County), N.C.

James Lee Brooks born 2/15/1892 and died 11/20/1963 in Spencer (Rowan County), N.C. Married to Abbie Tucker. Buried at Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury, N.C.

Cias Baker Brooks born 1/13/1894 and died 11/15/1980 in Midland (Cabarrus County), N.C. Married Dora Faye Helms. Buried at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, N.C.

Lydia Aranner Brooks born 12/7/1896 and died 7/25/1989 in Cabarrus County. She married Custer Turner. Buried at Love's Grove Methodist Church, Stanfield (Stanly County), N.C.

All of the children that James Thomas Brooks had were born in Union County, on the land that he owned known to the family as the "BIGFOOT PLACE" which is located behind New Hope Baptist Church on the land where "The Old Brooks Cemetery is located. He later sold that place and moved to Cabarrus County, just across the Rocky River on State Highway 24/27 where he and his children built the big house that today is still inhabited by relatives of his.
