Roster of Company B, 43rd North Carolina Infantry

This company was known as the “Union Farmers” and was raised in

Union and Mecklenburg Counties in January-February, 1862.

It was mustered in at Camp Mangum, NC (near Raleigh) on April 2, 1862.

Alexander, B. C.  - Private - Place and date of enlistment not reported.

Alexander, John M. - Sergeant - Previously served as Private in Company B, 1st NC Infantry. Enlisted in this company in Mecklenburg County, NC at age 20 on Feb. 20, 1862. Promoted to Sergeant prior to July 1, 1862.

Alexander, Julius J. - 3rd Lieutenant  - Previously served as Private in Company B, 1st NC Infantry. Appointed 3rd Lieutenant of this company Feb. 12, 1862. Died July 15, 1863 at Gettysburg of wounds.

Aycock, William M. - Private - Born in Darlington District, SC and resided in Union County, NC where he was by occupation a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 19, 1862 at age 25. [Note: present at veteran’s reunion in Monroe on Sept 12, 1890.]

Barnes, Bryant - Private - Resided in Wilson County, NC and enlisted at Camp Holmes Jan. 14, 1862 at age 35.

Barton, Young H. - No record found, although NC Pension records indicate that he served in this company.

Belk, Jehu W.  - Private - Was by occupation a farmer when he enlisted Dec. 15, 1862; died Aug. 14, 1863 in hospital at Petersburg, VA of febris typhoides.

Blackwelder, David - Private - Born in Cabarrus County where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 28, 1862 at age 26.

Boyd, Hugh B. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 17, 1862 at age 19.

Bridgers, Alfred Washington - Captain - Served as Captain of Company G of this regiment Reported on duty as acting commander of Company B from approx. Sept. 19, 1864 through Oct. 31, 1864, and during Jan.-Feb., 1865.

Broom, Albert T. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 1, 1862 at age 21.

            Act of 1901 Pension Application: Company B, 43rd NC Infantry. Applied for pension in 1901 from Walkersville, Union Co, NC at age 60.     Reapplied July 7, 1913 at age 72 from Waxhaw, NC. (Apr 12, 1841-Feb 16, 1916). Buried at McWhorter Family Cemetery.

Broom, Calvin - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 22, 1862 at age 30.

Broom, Jackson A. - Private - Previously served as a Private in Co. B, 26th NC Infantry and transferred to this company on or abt. Oct. 29, 1862.

Broom, Nimrod W. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Jan. 7, 1862 at age 20.

Note: On Reunion Committee of Co. B, 43rd NC, Aug. 9, 1879 in Monroe.  See Act of 1901 Pension Application: Applied for pension July 6, 1908 at age66 from Monroe Rt. #10. Stated that he was wounded at Gettysburg about July 2, 1863.  Pension was disallowed. Reapplied for pension July 7, 1909 at age 67 from Monroe Rt. #10 and was approved.

Broom, Sampson - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Jan 7, 1862 at age 24.

Broom, Sampson A. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Jan. 7, 1862 at age 30.

Broom, Solomon - Corporal - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted as a Private on Jan. 9, 1862 at age 28. Promoted to Corporal in Sept.-Oct., 1862. Died July 14, 1864 at hospital in Washington, DC of wounds.

Broom, Wilson B. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Jan. 8, 1862 at age 24.Died April 10, 1865 at Elmira, NY of chronic diarrhoea.

Burwell, Robert Turnbull - 3rd Lieutenant  - Previously served in Company B, 1st NC Infantry. Enlisted in this company in Mecklenburg County at age 20. Mustered in as Private. Appointed 3rd lieutenant on Oct. 2, 1863. Died March 18, 1865 in Charlotte, NC of wounds.

Burwell, William R. - Private - Resided in Mecklenburg County when he enlisted April 13, 1862 at age 18. Was detailed as regiment hospital steward and regimental druggist during much of the war.

Chew, James - Private - Place and date of enlistment not reported.

Cochran, William Lee - Private - Born in Mecklenburg County where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted March 14, 1862 at age 18; Killed July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg.

Cox, William H. - Private - Resided in Union County, NC - date and place of enlistment not reported.

Craft, Andrew J. - Corporal - Born in Richland District, SC and resided in Union County, NC where he was by occupation a shoemaker when he enlisted as a Private Jan. 11, 1862 at age 31. Killed July 11, 1864 near Washington, DC.

Crocker, Luther R. - Captain - Served as 3rd Lieutenant of Company G of this regiment Reported on duty as acting commander of company B during Nov.-Dec., 1864.

Deaton, Burton C.  - Private - Enlisted in Lenoir County, NC on April 1, 1864 at age 19.

Dees, C. Allen - Private - Enlisted in Union County, NC on May 7, 1862. Died Sept. 1, 1863 at hospital in Gettysburg, PA of wounds at age 29.

Fincher, Levi J. - Private - Born in Union County, GA and resided in Mecklenburg Co. where he was by occupation a carpenter when he enlisted Jan. 29, 1862 at age 28.

Fowler, George W. - Private - Resided in Union County, NC when he enlisted April 9, 1862 at age 45. Died on or abt. Aug. 28, 1863 in Chester, PA of “exhaustion from long continued remittent fever.”

Fowler, Moses F. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 20, 1862 at age 23. Killed on or abt. June 2, 1864 at or near Cold Harbor, VA.

Grier, Paul Barringer - 1st Sergeant - Born in Mecklenburg County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 17, 1862 at age 22. Mustered in as 1st Sergeant. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant Aug. 29, 1863 and transferred to Company E, 11th Regt. NC Troops (1st Regt. NC Volunteers).

Griffin, Charles P.  - Private - Enlisted in Wake County, NC Oct. 8, 1862. Died Oct. 31, 1863 at Point Lookout, MD of chronic diarrhoea.

Griffin, Farrington - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 7, 1862 at age 24. Died June 2, 1865 at Point Lookout, MD of scurvy.

Griffin, Marley - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 5, 1862 at age 18.

Griffith, James Larkin - Corporal - Previously served in Company B, 1st NC Infantry. Enlisted in this company in Mecklenburg County on March 10, 1862 at age 21. Died Oct. 17, 1864 of wounds. [Note: Death notice in Charlotte Western Democrat, Nov. 1, 1864.]

Griffith, Josiah H. - Private - Previously served in Company B, 1st NC Infantry. Enlisted in this company in Mecklenburg County on Feb. 10, 1862 at age 25.

Hall, John T. - Private - Enlisted in camp near Drewry’s Bluff, VA, Oct. 13, 1862. Mustered in as Musician (Drummer). Transferred to Regimental Band in Jan.-Feb., 1865. Reduced to ranks and transferred back to this company in March 1865.

H. Hiram - Private - Enlisted in Lenoir County, NC on March 21, 1864. [Note: Was this the same person as Hiram Hargett who was on Reunion Committee of Co. B, 43rd NC, Aug 9, 1879 in Monroe?] 

Hargrove, Robert W. - Private - Born in Mecklenburg County, NC and resided in Union County, NC where he was by occupation a carpenter when he enlisted Feb. 21, 1862 at age 24.

Harrington, Edward P. - Private - Born in Anson County, NC and resided in Union County, NC where he was by occupation a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 14, 1862 at age 16. Enlisted in Company K of this regiment on Feb. 25, 1862. “Claimed” by Captain R. P. Waring and transferred back to Company B abt. Apr. 2, 1862.

Helms, Alexander L. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 17, 1862 at age 21. Died June 11, 1864 at Richmond, VA of wounds.

Helms, Asa [1] - Corporal - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted as a Private Feb. 4, 1862 at age 22. Promoted to Corporal in July-Aug., 1863. [Note: On Reunion Committee of Co. B, 43rd NC, Aug. 9, 1879 in Monroe.]

Helms, Carson A. - Private - Previously served as Private in Company C, 9th NC State Troops (1st Regt., NC Cavalry). Enlisted in this company in Union County, NC on Feb 4, 1862 at age 28.

Helms, Elbert - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 1, 1862 at age 19. Died July 8, 1862 at home.

Helms, Josiah C. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 1, 1862 at age 22.

Helms, Noah E. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 22, 1862 at age 34. Transferred to Co. B, 26th NC Infantry Oct. 25, 1862. Died Dec. 9, 1862.

Helms, Noah J. - Private - Born in Union County, NC and resided in Mecklenburg County, NC where he was by occupation a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 8, 1862 at age 44.

Helms, William M. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 1, 1862 at age 25.

Howell, William J. - Private - Born in Mecklenburg County where he resided as a carpenter when he enlisted Jan. 29, 1862 at age 34. Died Dec. 2, 1863 of wounds.

Hunter, John Harrison - 1st Sergeant - Previously served as a Private in Company B, 1st NC Infantry. Enlisted in this company Feb. 10, 1862 at age 23. Died Feb. 6, 1865 at Point Lookout, MD of wounds.

Hunter, Walter Silas - Sergeant - Previously served as a Private in Company B, 1st NC Infantry. Enlisted in this company in Mecklenburg County, NC on Feb. 20, 1862 at age 25.

Johnston, S. Rufus - Acting Quartermaster Sgt.- Previously served as a Private in Company B, 1st NC Infantry. Enlisted in this company in Mecklenburg County on March 24, 1862 and mustered in as Sergeant.  Rank reduced to Private prior to June 26, 1862.  Promoted June 26, 1862 to Quartermaster Sergeant and transferred to the Field and Staff of this regiment.

Knight, William M. - Private - Born in Lancaster District, SC and resided in Union County, NC where he was by occupation a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 7, 1862 at age 31.

Lacy, Drury Jr. - Private - Previously served as a Private in Company B, 1st NC Infantry. Enlisted in this company March 31, 1862 at age 23. Appointed Adjutant (1st Lieutenant) on or abt. May 6, 1862 and transferred to the Field and Staff of this regiment.

Lacy, Singleton W. - Private - Enlisted at Camp Davis in June 3, 1862. Died in hospital Aug. 20, 1862 at Petersburg, VA.

Little, Bryant - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 27, 1862 at age 24.

Little, Jacob - Private - Enlisted in Richmond, VA June 1, 1864. Died Jan. 12, 1865 at Point Lookout, MD of pneumonia.

Maness, Adam W. - Corporal - Resided in Union County, NC when he enlisted in Wake County, NC as a Private on Nov. 25, 1862 at age 32. Promoted to Corporal in Nov.-Dec., 1864.

Maness, Thomas Milton  - Private - Resided in Union County, NC when he enlisted April 16, 1862 at age 28. Died Oct. 22, 1864 at Elmira, NY of chronic diarrhoea.

McCorkle, Robert B. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Jan. 9, 1862 at age 32. Mustered in as a Sergeant and reduced to ranks in Sept.-Oct., 1862.  Killed April 20, 1864 at Plymouth, NC. [Note: See death notice in Charlotte Western Democrat, May 3, 1864.]

            Act of 1885 Pension Applications: Widow Martha McCorkle applied for pension June 30, 1885 from Poortith P.O. at age 50. Application stated that soldier enlisted in Co. B, 43rd NC State Troops on Jan. 9, 1862 and died May 10, 1863 in NC. Affidavit dated Sept. 10, 1885 from W. S. P. Hunter who was also a member of the same company and regiment, stated that McCorkle was killed in battle at Plymouth, NC on Apr 19, 1864 and that he saw McCorkle after he was shot and knows that he was dead, that the wound which caused the death was a wound through the body just below the neck….

McGinnis, Robert Charles - Sergeant - Previously served as a Private in Company B, 1st NC Infantry. Enlisted in this company in Mecklenburg County, NC Feb. 24, 1862. Mustered in as Corporal and promoted to Sergeant in Sept.-Oct., 1862.

McGuirt, David - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 5, 1862 at age 44. Died June 10, 1862 at hospital in Wilmington, NC of pneumonia.

            Act of 1885 Pension Applications: Widow Mary E. McGuist applied for pension May 18, 1885 from Monroe at age 56. Application stated that soldier enlisted in Co. B. 43rd NC State Troops on Feb. 5, 1862 and died in NC on June 1, 1862 of sickness.

McGuirt, Hugh A. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 5, 1862 at age 18. Died May 2, 1862 at Camp Caswell, NC of pneumonia.

McLendon, John C. - Private - Previously served in Company I of this regiment. Enlisted in this company in Wake County on Oct. 8, 1862.

Moore, Pleasant - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Jan. 8, 1862 at age 39.

Mullis, Irving - Private - Enlisted in Lenoir County, NC on March 21, 1864.

Mullis, Simon - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 5, 1862 at age 43. [Note: On Reunion Committee of Co. B, 43rd NC, Aug 9, 1879 in Monroe.] Act of 1901 Pension Application: Widow Mary Mullis

            applied June 24, 1901 at age 63 from Waxhaw. States her husband died “19 years ago” of cancer. “My only help at home is a one armed son.”

Parsons, Larkin J. - Private - Born in Wilkes County NC and resided in Union County, NC where he was by occupation a farmer when he enlisted April 2, 1862 at age 21.

Paxton, William W. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted March 19, 1862 at age 28, although never reported for duty.

Phillips, John - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a carpenter  when he enlisted Jan. 7, 1862 at age 35. Died Aug. 24, 1864 at Winchester, VA.

Poole, Isaac - Private - Enlisted at Winchester, VA, Sept. 18, 1864. Buried at Deep Springs Baptist Church, Anson County, NC (Aug 1, 1847-Sept 7, 1914).

Presley, Caswell - Private - Resided in Union County, NC and was by occupation a farmer when he enlisted at Culpeper Court House, VA on June 8, 1863 at age 16.

            [Note: Buried at Holly Springs Cemetery just outside Harrisburg, Poinsett Co., Arkansas His widow Susie applied for Confederate pension from Monroe Co, AR.[2]]

Presley, John M. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 5, 1862 at age 19.

Presson, Henry S. - Sergeant - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a carpenter when he enlisted as a Private on Feb. 3, 1862 at age 34. Promoted to Corporal on unspecified date. Promoted to Sergeant prior to July 1, 1862. [Note: On Reunion Committee of Co. B, 43rd NC, Aug 9, 1879 in Monroe] Act of 1901 Pension Application: Applied for pension June 21, 1901 from Zoar at age 75. Application stated that he enlisted in Co. B, 43rd NC State Troops on Feb. 3, 1862 and was wounded in right leg “shattered the bone” at Petersburg on April 2, 1865. Widow M. C. Presson applied for pension July 1, 1907 from Monroe at age 72.

Price, Josiah G. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 3, 1862 at age 24.

Rea, William Fletcher - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 26, 1862 at age 36.

Reams, John W. - Private - Resided in Union County, NC when he enlisted Feb. 5, 1862 at age 37. Joined the U.S. Army when released as POW at Fort Delaware on or about Aug. 1, 1863. 

Richardson, John M. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 4, 1862 at age 21.

Ringstaff, Henry - 1st Lieutenant - Born in Orange County and resided in Union County, NC where he was by occupation a merchant when he enlisted at age 28.  Appointed 1st Lieutenant on Feb. 12, 1862.

Robinson, Milas B. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 7, 1862 at age 41. Died May 12, 1865 at Point Lookout, MD of chronic diarrhoea.

Robinson, Munroe M.  - Private - Born in Rowan County, NC and resided in Cabarrus County, NC when he enlisted there on Feb. 1, 1862 at age 21. Died July 17, 1864 at Charlottesville, VA of “diarrhoea chronic.”

Robinson, Samuel J. - Private - Born in Rowan County, NC and resided in Union County, NC when he enlisted Feb. 1, 1862 at age 19. Died July 9, 1862 in hospital in Petersburg, VA of febris typhoides.

Rodgers, James - Private - Enlisted at Camp Holmes near Raleigh, NC on Jan. 14, 1863.

Rumfelt, J. F. - Private - Was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisted in Gaston County, NC on Feb. 10, 1864.

Rumfelt, Martin L. - Private - Enlisted at Wake County, NC, Nov. 25, 1862 at age 27.

Sadler, Thaddeus W. - Musician - Previously served as Musician (Drummer) in Company G of this regiment. Transferred to this company in Nov.-Dec., 1862 as a Musician.

Sadler, William B. - Musician - Enlisted in Lenoir County, NC on March 8, 1863 as a Musician (Drummer).

Secrest, Hiram - Private - Born in Union County, NC and resided in Mecklenburg County, NC where he was a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 1, 1862 at age 21. [Note: On Reunion Committee of Co. B, 43rd NC, Aug 9, 1879 in Monroe]

Secrest, J. - Private - Enlisted in Wake County, NC on Nov. 14, 1864.

Shehen, J. E - Private - Enlisted at Petersburg, VA, Jan. 15, 1865.

Sikes, George Y. - Private - Born in Anson County, NC and resided in Union County, NC when he enlisted Feb. 13, 1862 at age 21.

Simpson, Hampton M. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 20, 1862 at age 20.

Stacks, Albert - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 21, 1862 at age 44.

Stancill, James M. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 13, 1862 at age 23. Died in camp Dec. 8, 1862 near Drewry’s Bluff, VA.

Starnes, Daniel - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted March 25, 1862 at age 17. [Note: See Carolinas Genealogical Society bulletin Vol. XXXV.2, FALL 1998-1999 for article about him.] Act of 1901 Pension Application: Applied for pension July 6, 1915 at age 77 from Monroe. Stated that he was a prisoner at close of war. Buried at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.

Starnes, Thomas H. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted March 19, 1862 at age 24.

            See Act of 1885 Pension Application. Also see Act of 1901 Pension Application. Applied for pension July 4, 1885 from Mt. Prospect P.O. at age 44. Application stated that he had enlisted in Company B, 43rd Regiment NC State Troops on or about March 19, 1862, and while at Snigger’s (sic) Gap, Va., on or about July 18, 1864, he received a wound by which he lost his left arm. W. O. Starnes signed affidavit attesting that the facts stated in the application were true. Doctor’s report stated that the left arm was amputated at the shoulder joint.

Stearns, John R. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 19, 1862 at age 30. Killed July 18, 1864 at Snicker’s Gap, VA.

Stearns, Johnson - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 19, 1862 at age 22.

Steel, Ezekiel - Private - Enlisted at Camp Holmes, near Raleigh, NC on Nov. 1, 1862. Died Sept. 1, 1864 at or near Winchester, VA. [Note: Buried at Stonewall Cemetery, Winchester, VA.]

Steel, Thomas H. - Private - Previously enlisted in Company D, 37th Regiment NC Troops (rejected for service). Enlisted in this company in Union County, NC on Jan. 21, 1862. [Note: See Carolinas Genealogical Society bulletin Vol. XL.2, FALL 2003-2004 for Confederate Pension Application File of Thomas Henry Steele, who was born abt. 1844 in Lancaster District, SC and died Nov. 1, 1907 Carroll County, Mississippi]

Stegall, Ambrose M. - Private - Resided in Union County, NC when he enlisted April 9, 1862 at age 17.

Stegall, Moses - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Jan. 21, 1862 at age 44.

Stitt, William E. - Captain - Previously served as Private in Company B, 1st Regiment NC Infantry. Enlisted in this company at age 29 and appointed 2nd Lieutenant on Feb. 12, 1862. Promoted to Captain between March-October, 1864.

Stout, Jacob L. - Private - Born in Randolph County, NC and resided in Mecklenburg County, NC where he was by occupation a butcher when he enlisted Feb. 11, 1862 at age 23.

Stowe, Wilson L. - Private - Enlisted in Lenoir County, NC on May 4, 1863. Died June 16, 1864 at Point Lookout, MD.

Swift, George W. - Private - Born in Davidson County, NC and resided in Union County, NC where he was a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 19, 1862 at age 19.

Tharel, William E. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 4, 1862 at age 23.

Thomas, Lewis - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 9, 1862 at age 44.b

Thornburg, John L. - Private - Born in Mecklenburg County, NC when he enlisted Feb. 7, 1862 at age 35.

Waring, Robert Payne - Captain - Born in King and Queen County, VA and resided in Mecklenburg Co., where he was by occupation a lawyer when he enlisted at age 35. Appointed Captain on or about Jan. 22, 1862. Later served as Adjutant of the 4th NC Senior Reserves.

Warnick, John - Private - Born in Philadelphia, PA and resided in Union County, NC where he was a shoemaker when he enlisted Feb. 7, 1862 at age 44. Later assigned to Company F, 2nd Battalion Virginia Infantry (Local Defense). [Note: See article in Thursday, February 3, 1863 issue of the N. C. ARGUS  (as John Warwick of Co. B, 43rd NC)]

Whisnant, Thomas W. - Private - Resided in Mecklenburg County, NC and enlisted in Petersburg, VA Feb. 12, 1865.

Wills, George Whitaker - Captain - Served as 3rd Lieutenant of Company D of this regiment Reported on duty as acting commander of company B during July-Aug., 1864.

Wilson, General Jackson - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 19, 1862 at age 19. Died Aug. 4, 1863 at hospital in Staunton, VA of febris typhoides.

Wilson, James A. - Private - Born in Union County, NC where he resided as a farmer when he enlisted in Mecklenburg County, NC on Feb. 28, 1862 at age 25.

Wilson, William A. - Private - Born in York District, SC and resided in Mecklenburg County, NC where he was a farmer when he enlisted Feb. 10, 1862 at age 18.

[1] - Tuesday, March 23, 1909, THE MONROE JOURNAL (Union County, NC)

-Mr. Asa HELMS, youngest and last son of the late Tillman HELMS of this county, died at his home nine miles west of Hot Springs, Ark., January 12th.  He was a faithful Confederate soldier, Company B, 43rd regiment N.C. troops, and left this county about the year 1882.  He is survived by several children, one of whom is a Baptist preacher in Arkansas.
