Roster of Company I, 53rd North Carolina Infantry

Also known as: Co. I, 53^rd NC State Troops.

Most were from Union County, North Carolina

 

Company I was raised in Union County in March and April, 1862. Mustered into service at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, NC, on April 30, 1862 and assigned to the 53^rd Regiment NC Troops.

 

Because of the passage of the Conscription Act by the Confederate Congress on April 16, 1862, 90 members of the 53rd North Carolina, most of whom were under 18 or over 35 years old, were discharged by the end of May. These age restrictions were relaxed in 1864 because of the dire situation of the Confederate Army.

Ashcraft, Thomas E. [Thomas Ellison Ashcraft] – Captain. Born in Union County and resided there when he enlisted at age 27. Occupation: Farmer. Appointed 1^st Lt. Apr. 30, 1862. Present at surrender at Appomattox Court House Apr. 9, 1865. [Note: b.Dec. 29, 1834-d.Feb. 1, 1900. Buried at the Ashcraft Family Cemetery. He was on the Reunion Committee of Co. I, 53rd NC, Aug 9, 1879[1].]  

 

Jerome, Eber A. – Captain. Born in Mecklenburg County. Resided in Union County when enlisted at age 39. Occupation: farmer. Elected Captain Apr. 30, 1862. Resigned June 2, 1862.  [Note: b.June 8, 1823-d.Feb. 12, 1908. Buried at Williams Cemetery, East of Monroe. He was on the Reunion Committee of Co. I, 53rd NC, Aug 9, 1879[2].]  

 

Cuthbertson, John D. – 1^st Lieutenant. Born in Union County and resided there when he enlisted at age 27. Occupation: farmer. Elected 3^rd Lt. Apr. 30, 1862. Promoted to 1^st Lt. Jun. 2, 1862.  Captured at Fisher’s Hill, Va. Sept. 22, 1864. Confined at Fort Delaware, DE.  Transferred to Point Lookout, Md. Oct. 6, 1864. Paroled Oct. 11, 1864. Exchanged at Cox’s Wharf, James River, Va., Oct. 15, 1864. Hospitalized at Charlotte, NC Jan. 20, 1865. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House Apr. 9, 1865.

 

Green, James E. – 2^nd Lieutenant. Born in Union County and resided there when he enlisted at age 22 on March 20, 1862. Occupation: farmer. Elected 3^rd Lt. Jun. 24, 1862. Promoted to 2^nd Lt. Aug. 30, 1862. Hospitalized at Charlottesville, Va. Jun. 17, 1864. Transferred to hospital at Lynchburg, Va. Jun 20, 1864. Wounded in abdomen near Shepherdstown, WV Aug. 25, 1864. Hospitalized at Winchester Aug. 26, 1864. Transferred to hospital at Staunton, Va. Sept. 8, 1864. Furloughed on Sept. 25, 1864 and absent for remainder of war. Was on his way back to his regiment when Gen. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House Apr. 9, 1865. [Note: His diary kept during the war and afterwards is located at the NC Archives. Call No. PC.694. Location: 3B, MARS ID: 1204. I have not personally viewed it, but have seen reference to it.]

 

Lee, Joshua – 3^rd Lieutenant. Served previously as a private in Co. E, 48^th NC Troops. Appointed 3^rd Lt. Aug 30, 1862 and transferred to this company. Hospitalized at Petersburg, Va. in summer of 1863. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House Apr. 9, 1865.  [Note: See short article[3] written by his son, W. W. Lee of Montevallo, Alabama in Confederate Veteran Magazine, XVIII, 1910, p.376.]

 

Rushing, Reuben D. – 2^nd Lieutenant. Born in Union County and resided there when he enlisted at age 24. Occupation: Farmer. Elected 2^nd Lt. Apr. 30, 1862. Died at Weldon on Aug. 6, 1862. Cause of death not reported. [Note: Buried at Rushing Family Cemetery, 8 miles S. of Marshville, Union County]

Ashcraft, Thomas J. – Private. Resided in Union County when he enlisted there May 3, 1862 at age 34. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House Apr. 9, 1865. [Note: b.Jan 1828-Died Dec. 22, 1910 and is buried at Bethel Baptist Church.] 

 

Ashcraft, Wilson C. – Negro. Servant to Capt. Thomas E. Ashcraft of this company. Wounded in forearm by rifle fire at Fort Fisher Jan. 1865. [Note: Applied for pension on July 4, 1932 from Monroe, Union County at age 89. Stated that he had enlisted April 1, 1863 and was injured in right forearm at Fort Fisher. Was a personal servant to Capt. Thomas E. Ashcraft and was engaged for a part of his first years service in building fortifications at Fort Fisher. After completion of this work he was made body servant to Capt. Ashcraft. Further stated that he was born a slave to “Big John Ashcraft” in Union County and that when Rafe Ashcraft, son of “Big John” was mustered from service on account of disability, applicant was sent to army in his stead and served honestly and faithfully as required of him by his superior officer until the war ended.]

 

Austin, George Pinckney – Private. Born in Union County Oct. 20, 1838. Resided in Union County when he enlisted Mar. 20, 1862 at age 23. Occupation: farmer. Wounded in left foot (fracture) near Bethesda Church, Va. Jun. 1, 1864. Survived the war.

 

Austin, James G. – Sergeant. Born in Stanly County. Resided in Union County when he enlisted Mar. 20, 1862 at age 31. Occupation: Farmer. Hospitalized on Jul. 26, 1862 with remittent fever. Returned to duty Aug. 3, 1862. Died near Weldon on Aug. 8, 1862. Cause of death not reported. [Note: 5^th Sergeant. Born 1831-d.Aug. 6, 1862. Originally buried at Rock Quarry Cemetery and reinterred at Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh, NC, Grave 88 Division 2.]

 

Austin, Marcus E. – Private. Resided in Union County when he enlisted May 3, 1862 at age 19. Died at Weldon on or about Aug. 6, 1862. Cause of death not reported.

 

Baker, Charles E. – No record found. NC Pension records (for C.E. Baker) indicate that he served in this company. Possibly served also in Co. D, 37^th NC Infantry. [Note: Buried at Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery, Landsford Road, Lanes Creek Township, b.Aug. 13, 1842-d.July 30, 1898, “CSA”. Widow Catherine J. Baker applied for pension July 7, 1913 from Marshville at age 66. Stated that her husband enlisted in 1861 in Co. I, 53^rd NC State Troops.]

 

Baker, Daniel D. – Private. Resided in Union County when he enlisted May 3, 1862 at age 33. Occupation: Farmer. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House Apr. 9, 1865.

 

Baker, Eli D. – Private. Born in Union County where he resided when he enlisted Mar. 20, 1862 at age 25. Occupation: Farmer. Died in hospital at Petersburg, Va. on or about Aug. 3, 1862 of typhoid fever.

 

Bass, Andrew J. – Private. Born in Union County where he resided when he enlisted Apr. 15, 1862 at age 28. Occupation: Mechanic. Captured at Spotsylvania Court House, Va. May 20, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Md. May 23, 1864. Transferred to Elmira, NY Jul. 3, 1864. Paroled Feb. 24, 1865 and transferred to James River for exchange.

 

Bennett, James W. – Private. Born in Union County where he resided when he enlisted Mar. 20, 1862 at age 27. Occupation: Farmer. Deserted to the enemy at Greencastle, Pa., Jun. 22, 1863. Confined at Fort Delaware on or about July 9, 1863. Died at Fort Delaware on Jan. 4, 1864 of inflammation of pleura.

 

Bennett, Joseph B. – Private. Resided in Union County when he enlisted May 3, 1862 at age 34. Occupation: Farmer. Survived the war. [Note: Possibly the Joseph Bennett b.Nov. 19, 1828-d.Apr. 29, 1911. Buried at Bennett Family Cemetery, Ansonville Road]

 

Bivens, Joseph A. – Private. Born in Union County where he resided when he enlisted Mar. 20, 1862 at age 24. Occupation: Farmer. On detail as regimental mail carrier during much of Sept. 1862 through Feb. 1863. Wounded at Gettysburg, Pa. July 1, 1863. Wounded in arm above elbow near Bethesda Church, Va., May 30, 1864. Survived the war. [Note: Reverend. b.Jan. 29, 1838-d.Aug. 16, 1920. Buried at Williams-Bivens-Griffin Cemetery on Ansonville Road. Applied for pension July 7, 1909 as “Rev. J. A. Bivens,” age 81 from Wingate. Stated that he enlisted May 1862. Was slightly wounded at Gettysburg and at Cold Harbor “ball went thru breast and shot off arm at same time in 1864. Bivens, Joseph W. –Private. Born in Anson County and resided in Union County when he enlisted Mar. 20, 1862 at age 23. Occupation: Farmer. Wounded in shoulder near Spotsylvania Court House May 19, 1864. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House Apr. 9, 1865.

 

Bivens, Thomas J. – Private. Born in Union County where he resided when he enlisted Mar. 20, 1862 at age 22. Occupation: Farmer. Wounded and captured at Winchester, Va. Sept. 19, 1864. Died at or near Winchester Sept. 26, 1864 of wounds. [Note: See Tribute of Respect in Bethel Baptist Church Minutes published in the Carolinas Genealogical Society bulletin XXXVIV.4, Spring 2002-2003.]

 

Bivens, William – Private. Born in Union County where he resided when he enlisted Mar. 20, 1862 at age 39. Occupation: Farmer. Discharged in May, 1862 (probably from being over age). [Note: b.Nov. 6, 1823-d.Jan. 5, 1908. Buried at Williams-Bivens-Griffin Cemetery on Ansonville Road.]

 

Bivens, William N. – Private. Born in Anson County and resided in Union County when he enlisted Mar. 21, 1862 at age 22. Occupation: Farmer. Captured near Petersburg, Va., Apr. 2, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Md. Apr. 4, 1865. Released Jun. 23, 1865 after taking Oath of Allegiance. [Note: Possibly the W. N. Bivens b.Oct. 21, 1839-d.Oct. 5, 1865 and buried at the Bivens Family Cemetery on Philadelphia Church Road.]

 

Blanton, Jacob – No record found. NC Pension records indicate that he served in this company. Applied for pension from Fayetteville, Cumberland County, NC on May 29, 1902 at age 63. Stated he enlisted in Co. I, 53^rd NC State Troops in 1863. Wounded near Drewry’s Bluff, Va. on June 1864, wounded in left hand by minnie ball. Pensioned was not allowed due to “insufficient disability.” Reapplied June 18, 1903 from same location June 18, 1903, at age 64, and stated that he enlisted March 1863 and wounded near Richmond on June 1, 1863 “slightly in left hand by gun shot wound. Pension was approved.

 

Brigman, Ananias – Private. Born in Union County where he resided when he enlisted Apr. 1, 1862 at age 21. Occupation: Farmer. Wounded in right elbow (fractured) and captured near Washington, DC, Jul. 12, 1864. Right arm amputated at hospital in Washington on Jul. 18, 1864. Died in hospital Aug. 8, 1864 of wounds. [Note: Born 1841-d.Aug. 8, 1864. Originally buried at Arlington Cemetery, Washington, DC and reinterred at Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh, NC]

 

Brooks, Thomas – Private. Born in Union County where he resided when he enlisted May 3, 1862 at age 29. Occupation: Farm laborer. Wounded in right leg at Gettysburg, Pa., Jul. 1, 1863. Hospitalized at Charlottesville, Va., Jul. 12, 1863. Survived the war.

 

Brown, Charles Erastus – Private. Born in Union County where he resided when he enlisted Mar. 20, 1862 at age 18. Occupation: Farmer. Captured at Fisher’s Hill, Va., Sept. 22, 1864 and confined at Point Lookout, Md., Oct. 3, 1864. Paroled Feb. 13, 1865. Received at Cox’s Wharf, Va., abt. Feb. 15, 1865 for exchange. Survived the war. [Note: Widow Mary Frances Brown applied for pension July 2, 1913 at age 63 from Wingate and stated her husband’s name was Charles Erastus Brown who enlisted April 1, 1862 into Co. Chaney, Lanier – Private. Resided in Union County when he enlisted May 5, 1862 at age 30. Survived the war. [Note: b. Dec 19, 1831-d.June 15, 1897. Buried at Union Grove Primitive Baptist Church. Chaney, Noah – Private. Resided in Union County when he enlisted May 5, 1862 at age 29. Occupation: Farmer. Died at Orange Court House, Virginia, Jan. 29, 1864 of “cronic dierah.” [Note: Full name possibly Noah Ashley Chaney.]

                                              

Coker, Jesse – Private. Born in Chesterfield Dist., SC and resided in Union County, NC when he enlisted Mar. 20, 1862 at age 27. Occupation: Farmer. Died at hospital in Raleigh, Jan. 2, 1863 of “febris typhoides.” [Note: Widow Penina Coker applied for pension June 23, 1885 at age 58 from Beaver Dam. Stated that her husband had enlisted in Co. I, 53^rd NC State Troops on March 20, 1862, and died on or about Jan. 2, 1863 due to sickness.]

 

Collins, Edenton L. – Private. Born in Union County where he resided when he enlisted Mar. 20, 1862 at age 23, occupation: farmer. Died in hospital at Petersburg, Va., Aug. 4, 1862 of typhoid fever.

 

Collins, Gabriel – Private. Resided in Union County where he enlisted Feb. 19, 1863.  Captured at Spotsylvania Court House, Va. May 20, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Md., May 23, 1864. Transferred to Elmira, NY Jul. 3, 1864 and died there Aug. 7, 1864 of chronic diarrhoea.  [Note: Buried at Woodlawn National Cemetery, Elmira, NY in CSA plot 11]

 

Collins, Jasper N. – Private. Resided in Union County where he enlisted May 3, 1862.  Captured at Spotsylvania Court House, Va., May 20, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Md., May 23, 1864. Transferred to Elmira, NY Jul. 3, 1864 and died there Sept. 26, 1864 of pneumonia. [Note: Buried at Woodlawn National Cemetery, Elmira, NY in CSA plot 384. Cemetery records show he died and was buried on Sept. 24, 1864.]

 

Collins, Jordan W. – Private. Resided in Union County where he enlisted Oct. 28, 1862.  Deserted to the enemy at Greencastle, Pa., June 22, 1863. Confined at Fort Delaware abt. July 10, 1863. Transferred to Point Lookout Oct. 20, 1863. Released at Point Lookout Jan. 25, 1864 after taking the Oath of Allegiance and joining the U.S. Navy. Assigned to duty with the Potomac Flotilla. [Note: Buried at Beulah Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Buford Township, b.Aug. 6, 1837-d.Feb. 8, 1917]

 

Curlee, Archibald – Private. Born in Union County where he resided when he enlisted Mar. 20, 1862 at age 18, occupation: farmer. Detailed as a shoemaker much of the time from Sept. 18, 1863 through Feb. 28, 1865. Survived the war.

 

Curlee, Churchwell N. – Private. Born in Union County. Resided there when he enlisted Mar. 20 1862 at age 21, occupation: farmer.  Captured at Spotsylvania Court House, Va., May 20, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Md., May 23, 1864. Transferred to Elmira, NY Jul. 3, 1864. Paroled Oct. 11, 1864. Received at Venus Point, Savannah River, Ga., Nov. 15, 1864 for exchange and returned to duty. Survived the war.

 

Curlee, Clement M. – Private. Born in Union County. Resided there when he enlisted Mar. 20 1862 at age 20, occupation: farmer.  Captured at North Anna River, Va., May 23, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Md., May 30, 1864 and paroled abt. Oct. 30, 1864. Received at Venus Point, Savannah River, Ga., Nov. 15, 1864 for exchange and returned to duty. Captured at Point Lookout on Apr. 4, 1865 and released Jun. 24, 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance. [Note: b.Mar 13, 1843-d. Sep 26, 1901 in Union County. Buried at Harmony Church Cemetery, Peachland, Anson County, NC]

 

Cuthbertson, Thomas L. – Private. Previously served as Private in Co. D, 37^th NC Troops. Transferred to this company Jan. 19, 1864 in exchange for Private John P. Mullis. Appointed Musician and transferred to Regimental Band in May 1864. [Note: b.July 18, 1839-d.Jan. 7, 1884. Buried at Old Union Cemetery, Waxhaw.]

 

Duncan, Martin P. – Private. Previously served in Company K, 43^rd NC Troops. Transferred to this company in Sept., 1862. Discharged Dec. 5, 1863 by reason of hypertrophy of heart.

 

Duncan, William W. [William Wesley Duncan] – Private. Resided in Union County when he enlisted May 5, 1862 at age 27, occupation: farmer. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House Apr. 9, 1865. [Note: b. Apr 11, 1835-d. Oct 17, 1897. Buried at Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Indian Trail, NC]

 

Duren, Franklin L. – Private. Resided in Anson County and enlisted in Union County May 5, 1862 at age 29. Died in hospital in Wilson on Sept. 27, 1862 of febris typhoides.

 

Eason, William S. – Private. Resided in Union County when he enlisted May 5, 1862 at age 27.  Wounded in the hip at Spotsylvania Court House, Va., May 19, 1864. He was one of the two best marksmen in his company.

 

Elliot, Isaac A. – Private. Resided in Union County when he enlisted Mar. 20, 1862 at age 29, occupation: farmer. Shot in breast and killed at Spotsylvania Court House, Va., May 10, 1864.

 

Ennis, Benjamin G. – Private. Previously served as Private in Company C of this regiment. Transferred to this company in May – Aug., 1864. Transferred back to Co. C on Dec. 28, 1864.

 

Gaddy, Henry H. – Private. Born in Anson County and resided in Union County when he enlisted Mar. 20, 1862 at age 19, occupation: farmer. Wounded in right leg and captured at Winchester, Va., Sept. 19, 1864. Hospitalized at Winchester then transferred to hospital at Baltimore, Md.  Confined at Point Lookout, Md., Oct. 26, 1864 and paroled Oct. 30, 1864. Received at Venus Point, Savannah River, Ga., Nov. 15, 1864 for exchange. Hospitalized at Charlotte on Jan. 17, 1865, from gunshot wound received at Winchester. Furloughed Feb. 19, 1865.

 

Gaddy, R. A. – Private. Enlisted in Union County on Oct. 23, 1864. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House Apr. 9, 1865.

 

Green, Hartwell G. – Corporal. Born in Union County. Resided there when he enlisted as a private on Mar. 20, 1862 at age 21, occupation: farmer. Promoted to Corporal Feb. 1, 1864. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House Apr. 9, 1865.

 

Griffin, Alvin T. – Private. Born in Union County on Sept. 7, 1840. Resided there when he enlisted Mar. 20, 1862 at age 21, occupation: farmer.  Survived the war.

 

Griffin, Emsley M. – Private. Born in Union County. Resided there when he enlisted Mar. 20, 1862 at age 21, occupation: farmer.  Wounded at Gettysburg, Pa., July 2, 1863. Captured at Fort Stedman, Va., Mar. 25, 1865 and confined at Point Lookout, Md., Mar. 28, 1865. Released after taking the Oath of Allegiance June 27, 1865. “He was one of the two best marksmen in the company.” [Note: b.Oct. 11, 1840-d.Mar. 20, 1913. Buried at Monroe City Cemetery.]

 

Griffin, Jacob C. – Private. Born in Union County and resided there when he enlisted May 5, 1862 at age 34, occupation: farmer.  Detailed as a shoemaker at Richmond, Va., Nov. 30, 1862. Survived the war.

 

Griffin, James F. – Private. Born in Union County. Resided there when he enlisted Mar. 20, 1862 at age 19, occupation: farmer.  Mustered in as Musician but reduced in ranks Nov.-Dec., 1862. Wounded in shoulder and captured at Spotsylvania Court House, Va., May 20, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Md. May 23, 1864. Transferred to Elmira, NY Jul. 3, 1864. Paroled Feb. 20, 1865 and transferred to James River for exchange.

 

Griffin, James Hampton – Private. Born in Union County and resided there when he enlisted Mar 20, 1862 at age 19, occupation: farmer. Wounded in hip at Gettysburg, Pa., July 1, 1863. Captured at Gettysburg, Pa., abt. July 5, 1863 and hospitalized. Transferred to hospital in Baltimore, Sept. 1, 1863. Paroled at Baltimore Sept. 25, 1863 and received at City Point, Va., Sept. 27, 1863 for exchange. Retired to the Invalid Corps on April 21, 1864. [Note: He applied for pension on July 1, 1901 from Union Co. as J. Hampton Griffin, and died Jan. 9, 1927. See pension record for more info. Griffin, John S. – Corporal. Born in Union County and resided there when he enlisted as a private on Mar 20, 1862 at age 22, occupation: farmer. Promoted to Corporal on May 1, 1864. Wounded in hand at Winchester, Va., Sept. 19, 1864. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House Apr. 9, 1865.

 

Griffin, William A. – Private. Resided in Union County where he enlisted May 5, 1862 at age 18.  Hospitalized July 26, 1862 with remittent fever. Wounded in the head at Spotsylvania Court House May 19, 1864. Captured at Fort Stedman, Va., Mar. 25, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout Mar. 28, 1865 and released June 27, 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance. [Note: Possibly the W. A. Griffin b.June 17, 1844-d.June 13, 1889 and buried at the Griffin Family Cemetery on Hwy 205, 2 miles N. of Marshville]

 

Haney, David J. – Private. Resided in Union County where he enlisted May 5, 1862 at age 30, occupation: farmer.  Died at Orange Court House, Va., March 20, 1864 of pneumonia. [Note: Widow Margaret J. Haney applied for pension June 11, 1885 from Lanes Creek at age 52. Stated that her husband enlisted May 5, 1862 and died at Richmond, Va., March 29, 1864 of sickness.]

 

Haney, Norfleet B. – Private. Resided in Union County where he enlisted Feb. 2, 1863. Captured near Petersburg, Va., Apr. 2, 1865 and confined at Point Lookout, Md., Apr. 4, 1865. Released June 27, 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

 

Haney, Samuel J. [Samuel Jernigan Haney] – Private. Resided in Union County where he enlisted May 5, 1862.  Wounded in leg at Spotsylvania Court House, Va., May 10, 1864 and hospitalized at Richmond, Va. Captured near Petersburg, Va., Apr. 2, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Md. Apr. 4, 1865 and died there June 2, 1865 of remittent febris. [Note: b.Aug. 7, 1837 SC-d.Oct. 22, 1914. Buried at Faulk Baptist Church Cemetery, Marshville Township. Widow Mistress Agna Haney applied for pension July 7, 1915 from Wingate at age 76. Hasty, Stephen H. – Private. Born in Anson County and resided in Union County when he enlisted Mar. 20, 1862 at age 24, occupation: blacksmith or farmer. Wounded at Gettysburg July 2, 1863 and hospitalized at Charlottesville, Va. July 12, 1863. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House Apr. 9, 1865. Hasty, William H. – Private. Born in Union County and resided there when he enlisted on Mar 20, 1862 at age 21, occupation: farmer. Died in hospital in Wilson on July 28, 1862. Cause of death not reported.

 

Helms, Giles – Private. Resided in Union County when he enlisted on May 17, 1862 at age 30.  Detailed as a teamster for much of the period between July 18, 1862 through Oct., 1863. Died at Orange Court House, Va., Dec. 27, 1863 of disease. [Note: Widow Eliza A. Helms applied for pension May 11, 1885 from Monroe at age 55. Stated that her husband enlisted May 15, 1862 and died abt. Nov. 31, 1863 in Virginia of sickness.]

Wounded in the back at Gettysburg July 1, 1863 and captured there abt. July 5, 1863. Confined at Fort Delaware, DE abt. July 9, 1863.  Transferred to Point Lookout, Md. Oct. 20, 1864. Received at Venus Point, Savannah River, Ga., Oct. 29, 1864 for exchange and returned to duty. Deserted to enemy on unspecified date. Released at Washington, DC abt. Keziah, John C. [John Calvin Keziah] – Private. Resided in Union County where he enlisted May 5, 1862 at age 24.  Captured in hospital at or near Falling Waters. Md., abt. July 14, 1863 and sent to Baltimore. Transferred to Point Lookout, Md., Aug. 20, 1863 and exchanged on unspecified date. Returned to duty in Nov.-Dec., 1863. Assigned to duty with the ordnance train on April 8, 1864 through Feb. 28, 1865. Survived the war. [Note: b.1837-d. Oct. 14, 1913. Buried at Price-Tomberlin Family Cemetery. Husband of M.A. (Polly) Leonard Name appears on a register of claims of deceased officers and soldiers from North Carolina, which was filed for settlement in the Office of the Confederate States Auditor for the War Department. Leonard, Calvin D. – Private. Resided in Union County where he enlisted March 20, 1862. Died at Weldon, NC on Aug. 10, 1862 of disease. [Widow Emily Leonard applied for pension July 6, 1885 from Rushing P.O. at age [59?]. Application stated that soldier enlisted in Co. I, 53^rd NC State Troops and died of sickness on or about Aug. 10, 1862 at Weldon, NC. Widow S. E. Leonard applied for pension Jun 25, 1901 from Rushing P.O. at age 67. Application stated that soldier enlisted in Co. I, 53^rd NC State Troops on March 20, 1862 and died in service at Weldon, NC on Aug 10, 1862. She also stated that she had been on pension rolls 5-6 years.]

Hospitalized at Baltimore Oct. 13, 1864. Transferred to Point Lookout, Md., Oct. 25, 1864 and paroled Oct. 30, 1864. Received at Venus Point, Savannah River, Ga., Nov. 15, 1864 for exchange.  Captured near Savannah on Dec. 27, 1864 and sent to Hilton Head, SC. Transferred to Fort Delaware, arriving Mar. 12, 1865. Released June 19, 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

 

Lingle, Franklin S. – Private. Born in Union County and resided there when he enlisted on Mar. 20, 1862 at age 21, occupation: farmer. Mustered in as Corporal, and reduced in ranks in Dec. 1862. Hospitalized at Richmond, Va., Jan. 29, 1864 with organic disease of the heart. Returned to duty Feb. 17, 1864. Hospitalized at Richmond on March 16, 1864 with hypertrophy of the heart. Returned to duty Apr. 12, 1864. Captured at Spotsylvania Court House, Va., abt. May 11, 1864. Confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, DC, June 14, 1864.Transferred to Elmira, NY, July 23, 1864. Paroled March 2, 1865 and transferred to James River, Va. for exchange. Hospitalized at Richmond, Va., March 9, 1865. Survived the war. Lowery, Addison – Private. Born in Anson County and resided in Anson County or Union County when he enlisted March 20, 1862 in Union County at age 28, occupation: farmer. Hospitalized July 26, 1862 with typhoid fever. Wounded in forearm (fractured) at Gettysburg, Pa., July 1, 1863. Captured at Gettysburg abt. July 5, 1863 and hospitalized. Transferred to hospital at Davids Island, New York Harbor on July 23, 1863. Paroled Aug. 24, 1863 and received at City Point, Va., Aug. 28, 1863 for exchange. Captured near Petersburg, Va., Apr. 2, 1865 and confined at Point Lookout, Md., Apr. 4, 1865. Released June 28, 1865 after taking Oath of Allegiance.

 

McCollum, Daniel – Sergeant. Born in Union County and resided there when he enlisted on Mar. 20, 1862 at age 33, occupation: farmer.  Mustered in as Private and promoted to Sergeant before Sept. 1, 1862. Wounded in arm at Spotsylvania Court House, Va., May 10, 1864. Captured at hospital at Richmond, Apr. 3, 1865. Died in hospital, May 3, 1865. Cause of death not reported.

 

Marsh, Albert T. – 1^st Sergeant. Born in Union County and resided there when he enlisted on Mar. 20, 1862 at age 31, occupation: schoolteacher.  Mustered in as 1^st Sergeant. Hospitalized at Richmond May 8, 1864 with gunshot wound. Wounded in left heel at Fisher’s Hill, Va., Sept. 22, 1864. Captured at Harrisonburg, Va., Sept. 25, 1864. Hospitalized at Baltimore Oct. 13, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Md., Oct. 18, 1864. Paroled Oct. 30, 1864. Received at Venus Point, Savannah River, Ga., Nov. 15, 1864 for exchange and returned to duty. Appointed 2^nd Lieutenant Feb. 10, 1865 and transferred to Co. D, 37^th NC Infantry.

 

Marsh, James – Place and date of enlistment not reported. Discharged on April 19, 1862 by reason of physical disability.

 

Marsh, Jesse Ellis – Sergeant. Born May 27, 1833. Enlisted in Union County on May 5, 1862 at age 28. Mustered in as Sergeant. Discharged Sept. 5, 1862 after providing Private W. Virgil Simpson as a substitute. Previously served in the 81^st Regt. NC Militia.  Records of the United Daughters of the Confederacy indicate that he was wounded at Winchester, Va., Sept. 19, 1864 and was killed at Woodstock, Va., Oct. 7, 1864.

 

Marsh, John S. – Private. Resided in Union County where he enlisted May 5, 1862 at age 33, occupation: farmer. Shot in head and killed near Bethesda Church, Va., May 30, 1864. [Note: Marker at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, Union County, says: b.Feb. 4, 1829-d.May 30, 1864 “Killed in Battle of Cold Harbor, Buried on Battle Ground.”]

 

Medlin, Martin F. [Martin Fletcher Medlin] – Private. Resided in Union County where he enlisted May 5, 1862 at age 30, occupation: farmer. Wounded slightly and captured Oct. 19, 1864 at Cedar Creek, Va.  Confined at Point Lookout, Md., Oct. 25, 1864. Paroled Feb. 13, 1865. Received at Cox’s Wharf, James River, Va., abt. Feb. 15, 1865 for exchange. [Note: b.1832-d.1886. Buried at the Medlin Family Cemetery on Baucom-Deese Road]

 

Medlin, William M. [William Monroe Medlin] – Private. Resided in Union County where he enlisted May 5, 1862 at age 31, occupation: farmer. Accidentally wounded in the shoulder and head by Sergeant Daniel McCollum of this company at Spotsylvania Court House, Va., May 8, 1864. Died in hospital; May 19, 1864 of wounds. [Note: Widow Eliza A. Medlin applied for pension May 23, 1885 from Loves Level at age 46. Application stated that soldier enlisted in Co. I, 53^rd NC State Troops on May 5, 1862 and died in Virginia May 5, 1864. Affidavit from D. Mac Price stated that William Medlin was mortally wounded in battle at Spotsylvania Court House on or abt. May 9, 1864 and died in Field Hospital a few days later. Also: Widow Eliza Medlin filed a claim for settlement with the war dept. on February 20, 1865]

 

Meiggs, Hosea P. [Hosea P. Meggs] – Corporal. Born in Anson County. Resided in Union County when he enlisted April 10, 1862 at age 17, occupation: farmer. Appointed musician May 1, 1864 and transferred to regimental band. [Note: b. Sep 11, 1844-d. 1916. Buried at New Wingate Cemetery, Union Co., NC. He applied for a Confederate Pension from Wingate, NC on Jul 6, 1910 at age 66. See pension record for more info.]

 

Moore, Hampton C. [Hampton Claudius Moore] – Private. Born in Union County and resided there when he enlisted on Mar. 20, 1862 at 17, occupation: farmer. Niven, Malcolm – Private. Born in Anson County and resided in Union County when he enlisted Mar. 20, 1862 at age 36, occupation: farmer.  Mustered in as a Sergeant. Discharged on unspecified date by reason of being overage, abt. May 1862. Reenlisted with rank of Private on Feb. 11, 1863.  Reported “very sick” in camp Aug. 3, 1863. Died in hospital at Orange Court House, Va. on Aug. 24, 1863 of “tyfoid fever.”

 

Phifer, Irvin A. – Private. Born in Union County and resided there when he enlisted on April 1, 1862 at age 19, occupation: farmer. Wounded in thigh at Wilderness, Va., May 6, 1864. Hospitalized at Richmond, May 9, 1864. Transferred to another hospital May 10, 1864. Survived the war. [Note: Died March 22, 1905 at age 65. Buried at Griffin Family Cemetery on county road #1935, Marshville Township. Widow Henrietta Phifer applied for pension July 5, 1910 from Marshville at age 63. Pope, Thomas – Private. Born in Union County and resided there when he enlisted on Mar. 20, 1862 at 28, occupation: farmer.  Died in camp near Drewry’s Bluff, Va., Dec. 6, 1862 of pneumonia typhoides.

 

Pounds, Benjamin W. – Private. No record found. NC Pension records indicate that he served in this company and also in Co. I, 19^th Regt. NC Troops (2^nd Regt. NC Cavalry).  Applied for pension July 5, 1909 from Union County at age 76. Application stated that he had enlisted in Co. I, Barringers Brigade, 2^nd NC Cavalry Regt. on April 2, 1864. Affidavit dated July 3, 1909 from J. A. Marsh stated that he was in same unit with soldier. Widow Margaret Pounds applied for pension Jan 3, 1926 from Marshville at age 79. Application stated that soldier enlisted in Co. I, 53^rd NC State Troops on March 1, 1862, and that he died in 1925.

 

Price, Andrew G. [Andrew Griffith Price] – Private. Resided in Union County, occupation: farmer when he enlisted abt. Jan.-Aug., 1863, at abt. 39 years of age. Died in hospital in Gordonsville, Va., Aug. 4, 1864 of acute dysentery.

 

Price, David M. – Private. Resided in Union County where he enlisted May 5, 1862. Captured at Fisher’s Hill, Va., Sept. 22, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Md., Oct. 3, 1864. Paroled March 17, 1865. Received at Boulware’s Wharf, James River, Va., March 19, 1865 for exchange. [Note: David Mc. Price b.Dec 28, 1828-d.Jun 29, 1904 Buried at Presson Cemetery, Unionville, Union Co. He was on the Reunion Committee of Co. I, 53rd NC, Aug 9, 1879[7].]  

 

Price, Ellis P. – Private. Resided in Union County where he enlisted May 5, 1862 at age 27. Wounded at Gettysburg, Pa., July 2, 1863 and captured there July 5, 1863. Confined at Fort Delaware, DE on July 12, 1863.  Transferred to Point Lookout, Md. Oct. 20, 1863. Paroled Feb. 18, 1865. Received at Boulware’s Wharf, James River, Va., abt. Feb. 21, 1865 for exchange. Paroled at Charlotte, NC May 15, 1865. [Note: Buried at Price-Tomberlin Family Cemetery off Olive Branch Rd. No dates on tombstone. He applied for pension July 1, 1904 from Monroe at age 69. Application stated that he enlisted in Co. I, 53^rd NC State Troops and was wounded at Gettysburg, Pa., July 4, 1862 from spent cannon ball “and soon recovered.” Widow H. E. Price applied for pension July 3, 1905 from Monroe at age 64. Application stated that soldier died June 19, 1905.]

 

Price, James P. [James Patterson Price] – Private. Resided in Union County where he enlisted May 5, 1862 at age 25. Captured at Gettysburg, Pa., abt. July 1-5, 1863. Confined at Fort Delaware, DE abt. July 12, 1863. Transferred to Point Lookout, Md. Oct. 20, 1863. Paroled Oct. 30, 1864. Received at Venus Point, Savannah River, Ga., Nov. 15, 1864 for exchange. Died at Savannah before Dec. 6, 1864. Cause of death not reported. [Note: Widow Thetus C. Price applied for pension June 15, 1901 from Union County at age 65. Application stated that soldier enlisted in Co. I, 53^rd NC Infantry on March 5, 1862, was taken prisoner at Gettysburg, carried in transport to Savannah and died while in prison there. Also stated that she had been drawing a pension for the last 7 years.]

 

Price, William R. – Private. Resided in Union County where he enlisted May 5, 1862 at age 32, occupation: farmer. Wounded at Gettysburg, Pa., July 2, 1863 and captured there July 5, 1863. Confined at Fort Delaware, DE abt. July 12, 1863.  Transferred to Point Lookout, Md. Oct. 20, 1863. Died in hospital at Point Lookout, Jan. 3, 1864 of chronic diarrhoea. [Note: Buried at Point Lookout Confederate Cemetery. Widow E. E. Price applied for pension June 15, 1901 from Unionville at age 66 ½. Application stated that soldier enlisted in Co. I, 53^rd NC State Troops on May 2, 1862, was wounded at Gettysburg, captured in 1864 and died at Point Lookout.]

 

Privett, Martin V. – Private. On muster roll dated April 30, 1862:  Shows he was born in Anson Co, NC; was age 44; Occupation: farmer; Height: 5 feet 10-3/4 inches. Enrolled for active service March 20, 1862 in Union Co. by Capt. E. A. Jerome. Mustered into service April 21, 1862 at Camp Mangum near Raleigh. Shown on Roll of Honor for Union Co, NC, age 44; Volunteer; Discharged on unspecified date (probably abt. May, 1862 for being overage). [Note: He later enlisted in Company I, 4^th NC Senior Reserves. Company muster roll dated Sept. 8, 1864 shows the following: Enrolled June 8, 186- at Monroe by Lt. Davis. Age 47 yrs, 1 mo., 17 days. Height: 5 feet, 9-1/4 inches. Complexion: Fair, Hair: Lt, Occupation: Farmer. Where born: Union Co, N.C.  He had previously enlisted Mar 20, 1862 in Union Co. into Co I 53rd Regt. NC Troops. Record states that he was born in Anson Co, but resided in Union Co. He was discharged about May 1862 by reason of being overage. His obituary appeared in the Charlotte Democrat Aug. 24, 1874.]

 

Privett, John – Private. On muster roll dated April 30, 1862:  Shows he was born in Anson Co, NC; was age 47; Occupation: farmer; Height: 6 feet 1-1/4 inches. Enrolled for active service March 20, 1862 in Union Co. by

Capt. E. A. Jerome. Mustered into service April 21, 1862 at Camp Mangum near Raleigh. Shown on Roll of Honor for Union Co, NC, age 47; Volunteer; Discharged on unspecified date (probably abt. May, 1862 for being overage). [Note: Widow Lydia Privett applied for his pension July 6, 1908 from Monroe at age 80. Application stated that soldier enlisted in Co. I, 53^rd NC State Troops on March 1, 1863. Witnesses who testified that they were acquainted with Lydia were H.P. Meggs of Wingate, and J. A. Bivens.]

 

Richardson, James A. – Private. Born in Union County and resided there when he enlisted on Apr. 15, 1862 at 17, occupation: farmer.  Wounded in chest at Gettysburg, Pa., July 1, 1863. Captured there July 1-5, 1863 and hospitalized. Transferred to hospital at Davids Island, New York Harbor, arriving abt. July 24, 1863. Paroled there Aug. 24, 1863. Received at City Point, Va., Aug. 28, 1863 for exchange. Returned to duty in Jan.-Feb. 1864. On detail as ambulance driver March-April, 1864. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House Apr. 9, 1865. [Note: Applied for pension July 5, 1909 from Marshville at age 64. Application stated that he enlisted in Co. I, 53^rd NC State troops on Feb. 15, 1861 and was wounded through body and leg at Gettysburg.  Information from doctor’s statement: “Ball entered in front 2-1/2 inches to the right of the median line and lower border of ribs right of spine about 3 inches….” And that soldier was disabled by three fourths.]

 

Ross, James J. [James Ivan Ross] – Private. Resided in Union County where he enlisted May 5, 1862 at age 31, occupation: farmer. Wounded in left elbow and captured at Winchester, Va., Sept. 19, 1864. Hospitalized at Baltimore Oct. 6, 1864. Transferred to Point Lookout, Md. Oct. 25, 1864. Paroled Oct. 30, 1864. Received at Venus Point, Savannah River, Ga., Nov. 15, 1864 for exchange. Survived the war. [Note: b.Feb.4, 1831-d.Apr. 6, 1911. Buried at Hamilton’s Crossroads Baptist Church Cemetery.]

 

Rowland, William E. – Private. Born in Union County and resided there when he enlisted on March 20, 1862 at 24, occupation: farmer.  Hospitalized at Richmond, Jan. 8, 1864 with gunshot wound. Captured near Washington, DC, July 12, 1864. Confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington.  Transferred to Elmira, NY July 23, 1864 and released on June 19, 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

 

Rushing, Abraham D. – Private. Born in Union County and resided there when he enlisted on March 20, 1862 at 32, occupation: wheelright.  Captured at Gettysburg, Pa., July 5, 1863 after he was left behind as a nurse for the wounded. Transferred to hospital at Baltimore, arriving Sept. 29, 1863. Paroled Nov.12, 1863. Received at City Point, Va., Nov. 17, 1863 for exchange. On detail as shoemaker March 25-Oct. 31, 1864 and Jan. 2, 1865. Died at or near Petersburg, Va., March 31, 1865. Cause of death not reported.

 

Rushing, Levander T. – Corporal. Born in Anson County and resided in Union County when he enlisted Mar. 20, 1862 at age 29. Occupation: Farmer. Mustered in as a Private and promoted to Corporal before Sept. 1, 1862. Wounded in the back and/or left leg near Petersburg, Va., April 2, 1865. Hospitalized at Fort Monroe, Va., April 13, 1865 and died there May 24, 1865, of “exhaustion.” [Note: Buried at Hampton National Cemetery, Hampton, VA in plot #2175]

 

Simpson, W. Virgil – Private. Resided in Union County where he enlisted Sept. 5, 1862 at age 16, as a substitute for Sergeant Jesse Ellis Marsh. Wounded in forehead at Gettysburg, July 1, 1863. Survived the war. [Note: Oct. 10, 1847-d.June 10, 1904. Buried at Philadelphia Church Cemetery, SE of Monroe. See Confederate Veteran Magazine, XVI, No. 10, October, 1908, p.517. Widow Louise Simpson applied for pension July 15, 1911 from Marshville at age 73. Application stated that soldier enlisted in Co. I, 53^rd NC State Troops on Oct 15, 1861.]

 

Stegall, Eli – Private. Born in Union County and resided there when he enlisted on March 20, 1862 at 20, occupation: farmer. Died at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, NC, May 3, 1862. Cause of death not reported.

 

Stegall, George L. [George Little Stegall] – Private. Resided in Union County where he enlisted May 5, 1862 at age 26. Wounded in shoulder at Cedar Creek, Va., Oct. 19, 1864. Reported present through Feb. 1865.

 

Stegall, George W. – Private. Resided in Union County where he enlisted May 5, 1862 at age 22. Wounded in left hip and captured at Cedar Creek, Va., Oct. 19, 1864. Hospitalized at Baltimore, Md. Oct. 23, 1864  Confined at Point Lookout, Md., Oct. 26, 1864 and paroled Oct. 31, 1864. Received at Venus Point, Savannah River, Ga., Nov. 15, 1864 for exchange. Survived the war. [Note: He applied for a Confederate Pension from Union Co, NC on July 1, 1901 at age 61.  States that about Oct. 19, 1864 he was shot in left hip “ball is still there.”  See pension record for more info.]

 

Stegall, Griffin - Place and date of enlistment not reported. Discharged April 19, 1862 by reason of physical disability. Possibly enlisted in Co. I, 37^th NC Troops also. [Note: Feb 7, 1836-Mar 5, 1907. Buried at Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church, Lawyers Road, Marshville Township]

 

Stegall, Robert W. – Sergeant. Born in Union County and resided there when he enlisted on March 24, 1862 at 26, occupation: farmer. Mustered in as Private and promoted to Sergeant in Sept.-Oct., 1862. Wounded in thigh at Cedar Creek, Va., Oct. 19, 1864. Hospitalized at Richmond, Va. captured near Petersburg, Va., Apr. 2, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Md., April 4, 1865. Released June 19, 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance. [Note: b.Oct.31, 1835-d.Dec. 31, 1905. Buried at Marshville City Cemetery.]

 

Stephenson, B. G. – Private. Enlisted in Johnson County, NC. Enlistment date was Sept. 16, 1863, although he was not listed on rolls until May-Aug., 1864. Killed at Winchester, Va., abt. Sept. 19, 1864.

 

Strawn, Edmund – Private. Born in Anson County and resided in Union County when he enlisted April 15, 1862 at age 21, occupation: farmer. Reported absent without leave in July-Dec., 1862. Killed at home by the militia “while endeavoring to avoid arrest” in Jan.-Feb., 1863. 

 

Strawn, Stanley – Private. Born in Anson County and resided in Union County when he enlisted March 21, 1862 at age 17, occupation: farmer. Reported absent without leave in July-Aug., 1862. Discharged Nov. 4, 1862 by reason of “phthisis pulmonalis.” Reenlisted in same company Sept. 30, 1864 and reported present through Feb., 1865.

 

Strawn, William W. – Private. Born in Anson County and resided in Union County when he enlisted April 12, 1862 at age 23, occupation: farmer. Wounded in right hand at Gettysburg, Pa., July 1, 1863. Hospitalized at Richmond, Va., July 19, 1863. Transferred to hospital in Raleigh July 25, 1863. Captured at Spotsylvania Court House, Va. May 20, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Md. May 23, 1864. Transferred to Elmira, NY Jul. 3, 1864. Paroled March 2, 1865 and transferred to James River for exchange.

 

Tadlock, Uriah – Private. Born in South Carolina and resided in Union County when he enlisted May 5, 1862 at age 30. Captured at Fisher’s Hill, Va., Sept. 22, 1864 and confined at Point Lookout, Md., Oct. 3, 1864. Released May 15, 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance. 

 

Teal, Thomas H. – Private. Born in Anson County and resided in Union County when he enlisted March 20, 1862 at age 33, occupation: farmer. Surrendered at Appomattox Court House Apr. 9, 1865. [Note: Possibly the Thomas H. Teel b.Sept. 13, 1830-d.Aug. 30, 1877. Buried at Gaddy Cemetery near Wingate.]

 

Tew, H. – Private. Place and date of enlistment not reported. Reported absent without leave and believed to be in Sampson County on Feb. 28, 1865.

 

Tomberlin, Hosea J. – Private. Resided in Union County when he enlisted May 5, 1862 at age 30. Served as butcher during most of period through Feb., 1865.  [Note: b.Mar. 1, 1832-d.Mar. 28, 1916. Buried at Mill Creek Baptist Church. Applied for Confederate pension from Union County, NC after 1901. See photo and bio of him in Civil War Profiles by Jo Ann Stevenson published in the Monroe Enquirer-Journal, Apr. 16, 1981. Copy available at the Heritage Room in Monroe]

 

Tomberlin, Jacob S. – Private. Born in Union County where he resided when he enlisted Apr. 8, 1862 at age 26, occupation: farmer. Captured at Gettysburg, Pa., abt. July 1-5, 1863. Confined at Fort Delaware, DE abt. July 12, 1863. Transferred to Point Lookout, Md. Oct. 20, 1863. Died in the smallpox hospital at Point Lookout on Dec. 31, 1863. [Note: Buried at Point Lookout Confederate Cemetery]

 

Tomberlin, Josiah G. [Josiah Greenberry Tomberlin] – Private. Resided in Union County when he enlisted May 5, 1862 at age 20, occupation: farmer. Wounded at Gettysburg, Pa., July 2, 1863. Captured at Gettysburg, Pa., July 5, 1863. Confined at Fort Delaware, DE abt. July 12, 1863. Transferred to Point Lookout, Md. Oct. 20, 1863. Paroled March 17, 1865. Received at Boulware’s Wharf, James River, Va.on March 19, 1865 for exchange. Paroled at Charlotte, May 15, 1865.  [Note: b.Feb. 15, 1842-d.May 3, 1921. Buried at Mill Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Captured at Spotsylvania Court House, Va. May 20, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Md. May 23, 1864. Transferred to Elmira, NY Jul. 3, 1864. Released June 12, 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

 

Trull, James H. – Private. Born in Union County and resided there when he enlisted at age 36 on March 20, 1862, occupation: farmer. Mustered in as a Corporal. Discharged in May 1862 for being overage. Reenlisted June 17, 1863 and mustered in as a Private. Wounded in breast at Bethesda Church, Va., May 30, 1864. Wounded in left arm at Fisher’s Hill, Va., Sept. 22, 1864 and arm amputated. Survived the war.  [Note: Applied for pension June 5, 1885 from Raywood, Union County, at age 60. Application stated that he enlisted in Co. I, 53^rd NC State Troops on April 15, 1862, was wounded in left arm at Fisher’s Hill, Va. on Sept. 22, 1864, and lost arm near shoulder joint.]

 

Trull, John J. – Private. Resided in Union County when he enlisted Sept. 15, 1862 at age 25, occupation: farmer. Survived the war. [Note: b. Nov 18, 1837-d. Jul 21, 1889, buried at Williams-Griffin Cemetery on Monroe-Ansonville Rd.]

 

Tucker, Charles E. – Private. Had previously served as a Private in Co. K, 43^rd Regt. NC Troops. Enlisted in this company (apparently without authorization) on May 14, 1864. Transferred back to the 43^rd on May 22, 1864.

 

Walden, William M. – Private. Born in Union County where he resided when he enlisted on March 21, 1862 at age 21, occupation: farmer. Mustered in as Sergeant. Hospitalized with typhoid fever July 26, 1862. Reduced to ranks before Sept. 1, 1862. Deserted near Waynesboro, Pa., July 7, 1863. [Note: Applied for pension July 24, 1917 from Rte. 1 Monroe at age 77. Application stated that he enlisted in Co. I, 53^rd NC State Troops and was wounded in war and now suffered with dislocated hip and broken thigh. Pension was not approved. Numerous documents filed with application showing reasons why he should not be approved for pension. Document written by R. W. Lemmond, Clerk of Superior Court of Union Co., dated Aug. 28, 1917 and filed with application indicate he was a deserter due to his activity with the “Red Strings” for a long time after the war. Another document written on July 24, 1917 by R. W. Lemmond, stated that applicant “did not remain true to the end of the war….. The applicant, while on detail duty, was cut off from the main army and sought refuge with a family who was not in sympathy with the Confederacy. He was given shelter, and sometime later he went west and found employment and many North Carolinians among whom he remained until after the war was ended.  He states that while there he did not want to and did not try to get back to his company for the reason that he thought he would be captured in the effort to get back. Up to the time he was separated from his Co. and sought refuge, his record seems to be clear. He was separated from his company and went west something near 15 months or possibly a year and a half before the surrender. He came home soon after the surrender. All the facts necessary to granting a pension exist in this case unless he is considered a deserter and the facts in regard to that in the possession of the board are stated above….” ]

 

Webb, David Franklin – Private. Born in Union County where he resided when he enlisted on March 21, 1862 at age 21, occupation: farmer. Captured near Washington, DC on July 12, 1864 and confined at Old Capitol Prison. Transferred to Elmira, NY July 23, 1864. Paroled and transferred to the James River, Va., Feb. 20, 1865, for exchange, however he was hospitalized at Baltimore, Md., Feb. 22, 1865. Transferred to Fort McHenry, Md., May 9, 1865 and released June 10, 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

 

Webb, Samuel – Corporal. Resided in Union County when he enlisted May 3, 1862 at age 32. Mustered in as Corporal. Died in hospital prior to Nov. 1, 1864. Place and cause of death not reported. [Note: Buried at the Old Lynchburg Cemetery, Lynchburg, Va.]

 

Williams, John C., Jr. – Private. Born in Union County where he resided when he enlisted on March 20, 1862 at age 34, occupation: farmer. Hospitalized at Charlottesville, Va., Nov. 20, 1864 with dysentery chronic. Died in Charlottesville abt. Nov. 27, 1864. [Note: Buried at University of Virginia Confederate Cemetery, Charlottesville “J. C. Williams, 53^rd NC.”]

 

Williams, John Copeland, Sr. – Private. Born in Union County where he resided when he enlisted on March 20, 1862 at age 35, occupation: farmer. Mustered in as Sergeant. Discharged prior to Sept. 1, 1862, by reason of being overage. Reenlisted in this company with rank of Private on Feb. 11, 1863. Captured near Petersburg, Va., April 2, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Md., April 4, 1865 and released June 22, 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance. [Note: Possibly the John C. Williams b.Mar. 3, 1827-d.Oct. 31, 1901 and buried at Williams-Griffin Family Cemetery on Monroe-Ansonville Road.]
