The 4th Regt. N.C. Sr. Reserves was also known as the 73rd North Carolina Regiment and also the 2nd Regiment North Carolina Senior Reserves. This regiment consisted of men between the ages of 45 and 50 years of age. It was organized in July 1864, at Salisbury, N.C., by the election of the following officers, who had all seen previous service:
John F. Hoke, Colonel.
Leroy W. Stowe, Lieutenant-Colonel.
John N. Prior, Major.
In addition, R. P. Waring of Mecklenburg was appointed Adjutant, J. M. Williams was appointed Surgeon and Daniel W. Perry, Assistant Surgeon.
A portion of this regiment was assigned to guarding the bridges on the lines of railways and the remaining companies were sent to Salisbury to guard the thousands of prisoners detained there. The regiment was ordered to Raleigh August 21, 1864, for service at Wilmington, but was stopped at Greensboro and soon after it was sent to Salisbury where it performed the duties above mentioned till March 4, 1865, when not being longer needed to guard prisoners, it was placed in the Eighth Congressional District, with regimental headquarter at Salisbury, to arrest deserters.
A brigade was formed in November, 1864, of the
Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Regiments of Reserves, all of which were on the same
service guarding prisoners at Salisbury, bridges on railroads and arresting deserters. This brigade was placed under command of
Colonel John F. Hoke with headquarters
at Salisbury. The services performed
were useful and indispensable and relieved other troops for service in the
field. On some occasions there were
fights with deserters who were armed and when banded together made themselves a
terror to certain neighborhoods. The
only time these three regiments seemed to have come in contact with the enemy
was when Gen. George Stoneman made his
raid to Salisbury to release the prisoners at that point.
Upon Gen. Joseph E. Johnston’s surrender, some members of the regiment were paroled, but the majority doubtless went home without ceremony.

-The Salisbury Watchman of the 26th inst., gives the following account of an attempt on the day before on the part of the Yankee prisoners, confined near Salisbury, to overpower their guard and to escape. We learn that one of the guard killed was Mr. Thomas B. STEGALL, a worthy citizen of Union county. "At the hour of relieving the sentinels that had been on duty from 12 to 2 o'clock, a squad of prisoners made a rush upon the guard, seized their guns and in the scuffle killed two and wounded some few others. This unprovoked and unexpected attack upon our guard immediately drew the fire of the outer sentinels and two pieces of artillery upon the recusant prisoners. A few shots, however, which resulted in killing and wounding about fifty, restored the usual quiet."
