Phillips – Thomas Cemetery (aka Perry Cemetery)

New Salem Township, Union County, North Carolina

Submitted by Larry Hamilton - Cemetery photographs submitted by Ann Medlin Price

This is called the Perry Cemetery because it was on Perry land, but there are no Perry’s buried there (see below for explanation). The cemetery is located off the left side of Ansonville Road, between Marshville-Olive Branch Road and highway 218. It is about a hundred yards off the road in an open field and has a wire fence around it. It is easy to see from the road. I have listed all of the markers with names. There is one grave that is only marked with two field stones.

Mary Margaret Brantley was the daughter of John May Brantley and Sarah Holley Brantley.  She married first Samuel Edgar Brooks on 20 Aug 1891 in Union County, son of Davidson Brooks and Nancy Angeline Pyron. He is the only child of this union because Nancy died after bearing Samuel Edgar Brooks 5 Dec 1870. Samuel Edgar Brooks died 20 Jul 1896 in Union County and she married Enoch Phillips on 16 Sep 1897 Union County.  She then married Preston Ellis Perry, son of Jeremiah Perry in 1901 in Union County.  He and she are buried in Hamilton’s Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery in Marshville, Union County.
