SOME REVOLUTIONARY WAR SOLDIERS

BURIED IN ILLINOIS WHO HAD CONNECTIONS TO MECKLENBURG AND ANSON COUNTIES, N.C.

BENJAMIN GORDON was born in Newberry county, South Carolina, August 30, 1763. He enlisted in 1780 under Gen. Thomas Sumter, Mecklenburg county, North Carolina. After the battle of Guilford Court House he was sent as “wagoner”, with the wounded to Gen. Nathaniel Greene’s army. Later he served as a mountaineer ranger under Gen. John C. Clark of Georgia.  He was discharged in 1783. He came to Montgomery County, Illinois to reside, living in the Hurricane settlement. He received a pension for his services.  The place of burial is unknown.

 

WILLIAM STEWART was born in Mecklenburg county, North Carolina, in 1763. He enlisted in 1780 under Col. John Patton and was wounded at the battle of Camden. He came to White county, Illinois, and died there in 1856.

 

MICHAEL TEDRICH was from North Carolina. He was born at sea May 10, 1752. He enlisted in Anson county, North Carolina, serving three different times, three times each with Capts. William Hay, Solomon Wood and Robert High, under Col. Francis Malmedy. He came to Clinton county, Illinois, where he died February 10, 1834.  He was pensioned.

 

NATHANIEL BELL was born March 5, 1755 in Warren county, North Carolina. He enlisted in Anson county, April 1, 1776, serving fourteen months under Capt. Thomas Potts, Col. Isaac Huger, South Carolina troops; he enlisted again September, 1781, for two months with Capt. Thomas Harris, Col. William Lofted, North Carolina Troops.  He came to Illinois, settling in St. Claire county, where he died January 17, 1835. He was pensioned.

 

HUGH KING was born in North Carolina December 17, 1754. He enlisted in Mecklenburg county in 1778, re-enlisting twice, serving under Capts. John McRea and William Alexander, Major William Davis and Col. John Moore. He again enlisted in the South Carolina troops in 1781, serving with Capt. Andrew Alexander and Col. Wade Hampton in Washington’s dragoons.  In all he served seven times for a period of two years and ten months.  He was in several  skirmishes at Charlotte, North Carolina; Strawberry Fields, Quarter House and Ninety-six. He removed to Vermillion county, Illinois, where he died, and is buried in Springhill cemetery, Danville. He was pensioned.
