The cemetery dates to the 1700's. William Simpson b. 1752 in Ireland, came to America with his wife Martha Orr Simpson in 1772.  He served in the Revolutionary War as a soldier of the Continental Line in the Battle of Camden 1780 and until 1783. Died age 69 years in 1821. Wife Martha, b. about 1752 in Ireland, d. 1832. The earliest burial that we know of was their son, William who died about 1785 at about age 10.

Beside them in the cemetery is Martha Simpson, Granddaughter to William and Martha, daughter of James Simpson. She married Jacob Green Long.

Also buried here are John Cuthbertson, Jr, husband of Margaret Simpson who was the daughter of William and Martha John's father also served as a Capt. in the Revolutionary War.

Several unmarked graves. Picture above is AFTER a group of Simpson relatives performed a "cleanup" of the cemetery 1-27-2007.

Known Burials at William Simpson Family Cemetery

William Simpson  Aged 69 yrs.
(b. 1752 Ireland d. 1821)

Martha Simpson  (no dates)
(Martha Orr Simpson, wife of William, b. about 1752 Ireland, d. 1832)

William Simpson (no dates)
(son of William and Martha, died about 10 years of age according to family tradition, b. about 1775-85 d. about 1785-95)

John E. Simpson d. Feb 1850 Age 11 mo. & 22 days
(son of William Henderson Simpson, son of James Simpson and Hannah Weddington)

John Cuthbertson (no dates)
(believed to be husband of Margaret Simpson (dau. of Wm. and Martha), and son of Rev. War Capt. John Cutherbertson)

John Simpson Died 29 No. 1834 Age 74 yrs.
(based on age would be the son of William and Martha, other records show “original” John marrying his 3rd wife after 1834 and they had children as late as 1844.  If you subtract 74 yrs from 1844, it would make him born in 1770 which matches oral history records stating he was born in Ireland prior to their travels to America. So this 1834 date is strange to me, but that IS what is on the stone!)

Elizabeth Wooten b. 5 March 1895
(daughter of Sarah Pinion/Pinyan Wooten Simpson who was wife to John W. Simpson who was son of James and Hannah)

Lousia (no date)

(listed on 1850 census in Hannah Weddington Simpson’s household, age 28)

Saley Simpson (no date)

(believed to be “Sally” Simpson a.k.a Sarah Pinion Simpson who married John W. Simpson, and mother of Elizabeth Wooten above)

MJS d. 1834
(noted by Pauline as “child” but I don’t know. There is no indication on the grave marker to this. We believed this could be Mary Moore Simpson who was “original” John Simpson’s 2nd wife. She had no children after 1833 and John married his 3rd wife Mary Estridge prior to 1836 when their 1st child was born, maybe her middle name began with a J.

19 Additional unmarked graves (I just recently learned that John Cuthbertson III and wife Hannah Simpson are buried there but no readable stones can be found)

Mrs. Pauline B. Hinson, Route 7, Monroe, N.C. recorded and submitted the foregoing Simpson Cemetery listings.  Carolina Genealogical Society Bulletin XIII, 4. p. 64

Martha

Wife of J.G. Long

(She was d/o James Simpson, s/o “original” William and Martha Simpson)

Also note that as published in the March 28, 1905 Monroe Journal, twin daughters of W. Baxter Simpson were buried in the Simpson Cemetery. This is the most recent burial known at this time.

Updated listing 05/30/2007.
