During the last days of the Civil War, when the surviving Confederate troops were dwindling, the only resource available was to extend the age of the military conscription, which already embraced all able-bodied men between the ages of 18 to 45, except those exempt as State officers, physicians, and ministers of the gospel, and perhaps others. On Feb. 17, 1864, the Confederate Congress passed a law placing in the “Reserves” those between the ages of 17 and 18 and between 45 and 50. It was added that they were not to serve outside of their respective States, but this was soon disregarded out of necessity. Those between 17 and 18 years of age were embodied in April and May, 1864. Those between 45 and 50 were, for the most part, left at home till August and September to make and harvest the crops. Upon reaching the age of 18, many members of the Junior Reserves were sent to other regiments. Company F of the N.C. Junior Reserves was comprised mainly of young men from Union County, N.C.

He was 5’ 7” tall, had fair complexion, lt. hair, blue eyes. His name appears on a Receipt Roll for clothing dated July 28, 1864. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31, 1864 stated he was present. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31 to Oct. 31, 1864 stated that he was transferred to General Service on Oct. 10, 1864. Died after July 4, 1903, as his name appeared on a list of those attending a veterans reunion in Monroe.
Enlisted on Aug. 18, 1864 at Camp Holmes for the war. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31, 1864 stated he was present. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31 to Oct. 31, 1864 stated that he was absent on detached service Sept. 28, 1864. Died after July 4, 1903, as his name appeared on a list of those attending a veterans reunion in Monroe. Applied for pension July 6, 1908 from Union Co. at age 63.
He enlisted on May 30, 1864 at Camp Holmes for the war. His name appears on a Receipt Roll for clothing dated July 28, 1864. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31, 1864 stated he transferred to the General Service July 7th, 1864. Applied for pension June 17, 1911 from Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co, NC at age 66. Application states that he enlisted from Union Co. on Oct. 5, 1864 and contracted rheumatism during the war 1860 to 1861. This application was disallowed. He reapplied for pension Jun 10, 1912 at age 65 and was approved for Pension 4th Class. Doctor’s statement says that he contracted pneumonia in Dec. 1864 following measles and had a defective left lung, also his right ear had been infected from measles and he had been deaf in left ear since. His right leg was crippled from rheumatism contracted in war of 1861. He had also had a stroke of paralysis on left side of face. His widow Dorcas E. Austin applied for pension on Jan 27, 1926 from Charlotte at age 70. States they were married in 1870. [Note: Union Co. marriage records show that J. M. Austin, son of Joseph & Lydia, married on Apr 28, 1870 to D. E. Griffin, daughter of C. P. & Unity.]
J. C. Austin – possibly in this unit although no record found. J. C. Austin was on the Reunion Committee of Co. F, 2nd NC Jr., Reserves, Aug 9, 1879.
William A. Austin - No record found for him, although he applied for pension stating that he had served in this unit. He applied for pension from Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., NC on Jun 24, 1907 at age 60. States he enlisted in the Spring of 1864 in Co. F, 2nd Reg. N.C. State Troops. Widow Rhoda B. Austin applied for pension from Charlotte on Apr. 19, 1923 at age 63. Stated that they married in 1878 and her husband was in Co. F, 71st Regt. Application for increase in pension dated Jun 22, 1935 stated that “Rhoda Bell Austin” was totally disabled and confined to bed.
John Aycock - possibly in this unit although no record found.
Born about 1847 in Union County, NC and was by occupation a farmer when he enlisted on May 30, 1864 at Camp Holmes for the war. At time of enlistment, he was 17 years, 3 months old. He was 5’ 8” tall, had fair complexion, lt. hair, hazel eyes. His name appears on a Receipt Roll for clothing dated July 28, 1864. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31, 1864 stated he was present. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31 to Oct. 31, 1864 stated that he was present. Widow Hester E. Baucom applied for pension from Big Lick, Stanly Co, NC on July 6, 1909 at age 60.

At time of enlistment, he was 17 years, 5 months, 27 days old. He was 5’ 8 ½” tall, had fair complexion, dark hair, blue eyes. Elected 1st Lt. July 7, 1864. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31, 1864 stated he was absent, went to hospital Aug. 29, 1864. Admitted to Pettigrew General Hospital No. 13, Raleigh, N.C. with “diarrhea act.” On Aug. 29, 1864 and was furloughed for 14 days on Sept 2, 1864. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31 to Oct. 31, 1864 stated he was present. He was admitted on Jan 21, 1865 to C.S.A. General Hospital No. 3 Greensboro, N.C. His name appears on a Prisoner of War record dated May 12, 1865. [Note: He was on the Reunion Committee of Co. F, 2nd NC Jr, Reserves, Aug 9, 1879. Present at veterans reunion, Sept 12, 1890.]

William T. Broom
No service record found for him, although he applied for pension from Union Co, NC July 6, 1925 at age 78 and a resident of Waxhaw Rt. 1. Application states that he enlisted in Co F, 2nd NC State Troops in April 1864. Letter in pension record from Judge of Probate, Lancaster, SC dated Sept. 11, 1924 stated that William T. Broom of Lancaster County had been a Confederate Pensioner in S.C. and served in Co. F, 2nd Regt. S.C.V. for a period of 2 years and that Captain Bartley Benton was his company commander [note: Bartley Benton was commander of Co. F, 2nd NC Junior Reserves]. Note in pension record references letter from W. C. Heath of Monroe, NC dated Aug 21, 1925 which stated that Broom entered the war from “this county” (Union Co, NC) and moved to Lancaster county “several years ago” and transferred his application and received his pension from S.C. while a resident there. He came back to “this county some two years ago, but neglected to make application here and has, therefore, lost his pension for a period of a year, not having received same in S.C. for this period…. By his negligence he now realizes that he has lost his pension, but now applies for reinstatement.” Letter in pension record dated Aug. 26, 1925 from the State Auditor (of S.C.) says that he was an enlisted soldier in the Confederacy from S.C. and claims to have belonged to Company F, 2nd Regiment, but “The Department” at Washington City could not locate a record for him. Requested that they obtain a certificate from the Comptroller at Columbia, S.C. to the effect that Mr. Broom had been a resident and pensioner of S.C., although he was now a resident of N.C. Letter in pension record dated Aug 29, 1925 from the State of South Carolina stated that he was a resident of Primus, SC and had been a member of Company F, 3rd N.C.V. and drew a pension in SC from 1910-1919.

General Hospital #3 Greensboro, N.C. on Mar. 19, 1865 “transferred from Raleigh.” Applied for pension July 5, 1910 from Monroe, Union Co. at age 63. Widow Catherine Collins applied for pension July 3, 1922 from Marshville, NC at age 68. Another document submitted to the Pension Board on July 23, 1931 stated that she was totally and permanently disabled.

Born about 1847 in Anson County, NC and was by occupation a farmer when he enlisted on May 30, 1864 at Camp Holmes for the war. At time of enlistment, he was 17 years, 11 months, 7 days old. He was 6’ 0” tall, had fair complexion, lt. hair, blue eyes. Transferred to General Service [Co I, 43rd NC Infantry] on July 7, 1864. Resided in Union Co., NC and enlisted at Camp Holmes in Raleigh on July 25, 1864 for the war. Present or accounted for until captured near Petersburg, VA on March 25, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, MD until released on June 25, 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance. Applied for pension from Monroe, Union Co. on July 18, 1927 at age 81. Stated that he was wounded in Virginia in June 1864 “leg gunfire in the right side.” His widow, Mrs. N. J. Cox applied for pension July 20, 1928 and stated they were married in January 1866 and that he died Feb 25, 1928. A medical document in the pension file dated Oct. 7, 1938 shows that she suffered from partial blindness and other health problems and was totally disabled. This document shows their marriage date as Jan. 10, 1867.

He enlisted on May 30, 1864 at Camp Holmes for the war. His name appears on a Receipt Roll for clothing dated July 28, 1864. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31, 1864 stated he was absent “went to hospital July 15.” Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31 to Oct. 31, 1864 stated that he died Sept 30, 1864.

Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31, 1864 stated he was a Sgt. and that he was present. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31 to Oct. 31, 1864 stated that he was present. Widow Mollie Griffin age 80 applied for pension from Wingate, NC on Aug. 12, 1929. Stated they were married Nov. 1870 and that he died July 10, 1907.

W. D. Griffin – No record of him in this unit, but NC Confederate

for his pension on July 5, 1926 from Marshville Rte 4 at age 75. She stated that her husband had died Apr. 25,
1926.

Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31 to Oct. 31, 1864 stated that he was absent “went to hospital Oct 24.” Applied for pension at age 55 from Garmon’s P.O., Cabarrus Co, NC on Jul 28, 1902 due to physical disability. Stated that they were married “before 1870” and that she had no home or means of support except “as I go among my children.” This application was marked “Disallowed – married 1870.” Reapplied Feb. 4, 1929 and stated that her husband had served in Co. F, 2nd Regt. (71 NC Regt.) and they were married in 1870 and he died in 1898. She was approved for Class B Pension July 14, 1929.

from Monroe at age 68 and stated that he enlisted in May 1864 and was injured
at Bentonville in March 1865. Was wounded in left shoulder
“from which he suffers.” Was in several battles to end
of war. Doctor’s report stated
that he had a large scar on his left shoulder, apparently made by a ball or
piece of shell which fractured head of humerus. Shoulder joint very much in pain. Widow Nancy A. Parker applied for his pension
Jan. 22, 1938 from Wadesboro, Anson Co., NC at age 65. She stated that they had married on Dec. 3,
1905 and that he died Nov. 29, 1931.

Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31, 1864 stated he was absent, “went to hospital July 16.” Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31 to Oct. 31, 1864 stated that he transferred to General Service [Co. E, 37th NC Infantry] Sept. 2, 1864. Captured near Petersburg, VA on Apr. 2, 1865. Confined at Fort Delaware, DE until released on June 19, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance. Widow Elizabeth Rogers applied for pension July 11, 1927 from Union Co., NC. Stated that they were married Jan. 1, 1879 and that her husband had died Jan.15, 1912 and was on rolls in Union Co. She had been receiving a pension from S.C.

He was 5’ 10” tall, had fair complexion, lt. hair, blue eyes. Company Muster Roll dated June 1, 1864 listed him as a Captain. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31, 1864 stated he was a Captain and present. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31 to Oct. 31, 1864 stated that he was a 1st Sergeant and present. Paroled as a 1st Sgt. May 6, 1865. Was listed as Captain on roster dated at Goldsboro, N.C. Jan 16, 1865 “dropped from roll Sept. 12, 1864 by order of Sec’y of War.”

Stated that her husband enlisted April 1864 from Union Co. and that they were married Feb. 5, 1873. He died in 1904 and had not drawn a pension. On July 23, 1931, Martha J. P. Secrest applied for an increase in pension . Doctor’s statement stated that she was bedridden, had chronic myocarditis, nephritis, and achyla gastrica.

Born about 1847 in Union County, NC and was by occupation a farmer when he enlisted on May 30, 1864 at Camp Holmes for the war. At time of enlistment, he was 17 years, 7 months, 1 day old. He was 5’ 7-1/6” tall, had fair complexion, dark hair, gray eyes. His name appears on a Receipt Roll for clothing dated July 28, 1864. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31, 1864 stated he was absent, “went to hospital July 18.” Name appears on register of Pettigrew General Hospital, Raleigh, NC, with the complaint “Rubeola,” and he was admitted July 18, 1864. Was furloughed for 14 days on Jul. 31, 1864. Residence stated was Olive Branch, Union Co, NC. Name appears on Register of Pettigrew General Hospital #13, Raleigh, NC with “Psoriasis,” and was admitted Nov. 6, 1864. Returned to duty Nov. 23, 1864. Stated residence was Olive Branch, Union Co, NC. Register of CSA General Hospital #11, Charlotte, NC, states that he was admitted Feb 15, 1865 with “Febris Typhoides,” and was furloughed Mar. 17, 1865.
John W. Sikes [on rolls as J. W. Sikes] - No record found, although soldier applied for a Confederate pension based on his service in this unit. J. W. Sikes applied for pension June 10, 1907 from Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., NC at age 60. He stated that he had enlisted in Co. F, 2nd NC Jr. Reserves in Dec. 1864, and although he was not wounded at the time, he was presently unable to perform manual labor due to age and being “asmatic.” Doctor’s statement showed that he was ¾ disabled. His widow Mrs. M. J. Sikes applied for pension July 12, 1912 at age 61 from Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co, NC. John W. Sikes b.Nov 08, 1847-d.Dec 15, 1911. Buried at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Pleasant Hill Church Road, New Salem Township.

Included with his service record is a receipt dated Mar. 17, 1865 from the Quartermasters Dept., Charlotte, NC, stating personal effects received from Surgeon J. W. Tracey(?) in charge of General Hospital #7, Raleigh, NC. Among his effects was $55 in Confederate money.
Born May 6, 1847 in Union Co., NC. Company muster roll dated Aug. 31, 1864 states that he enlisted on Aug. 18, 1864 at Camp Holmes for the war. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31 to Oct. 31, 1864 stated that he was present. Died Dec. 2, 1924 in New Salem, Union Co., NC. Buried at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Pleasant Hill Church Road, New Salem Township. [Ref: Richard Crotwell [email protected]]. J. S. Smith applied for pension on June 24, 1922 from Marshville, Union Co. Application stated that he had enlisted in Co. F, 2nd NC Regt. on Sept. 15, 1864 and he was applying for pension on account “of old age and being affected with rheumatism and unable to earn a living.” Affidavit from J. P. Tarlton from Marshville attesting that the facts within the application were true to his knowledge.

He was 5’ 7” tall, had fair complexion, dark hair, gray eyes. His name appears on a Receipt Roll for clothing dated July 28, 1864. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31, 1864 stated he was present. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31 to Oct. 31, 1864 stated that he was “absent on detached service” since Oct. 16, 1864. B. F. Staton applied for pension July 18, 1918 from Ansonville, Anson Co, NC at age 67. Application stated that he had enlisted in Co. F, 2nd NC Jr. reserves in April 1864. Doctor’s report stated that he was totally unable to do work of any kind on account of paralysis and very far advanced heart disease. Affidavit of E. F. Fenton attested that the facts contained within the application were true to his knowledge.
Prisoner of War record states that he was paroled at Charlotte, NC on May 31, 1865.

Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31 to Oct. 31, 1864 stated that he was present. He died Sept. 23, 1936 and is buried at New Hope Baptist Church. W. A. Tarlton applied for pension July 5, 1910 from Marshville, Union Co. Application stated that he had enlisted in 1864 in Co. F, 2nd NC Regt. Doctor’s report stated that he suffered from bronchitis, weak nerves and general breakdown, and was ¾ disabled.
Nathan G. Thomas [on rolls as N. G. Thomas] – Private.
Born about 1847 in Union County, NC and was by occupation a farmer when he enlisted on May 30, 1864 at Camp Holmes for the war. At time of enlistment, he was 17 years, 8 months, 2 days old. He was 5’ 11” tall, had fair complexion, lt. hair, blue eyes. His name appears on a Receipt Roll for clothing dated July 28, 1864. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31, 1864 stated he was absent, “received furlough at Wilson’s Hospital.” Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31 to Oct. 31, 1864 stated that he transferred to General Service Oct. 10 [Co. D, 37th NC Infantry]. Widow Frances A. Thomas applied for pension Feb. 2, 1928 from Union Co. Application stated that her husband had enlisted May 30, 1864, they were married in Sept. 1875, and he died Feb. 26, 1912.

He was 5’ 8-1/6” tall, had dark complexion, dark hair, dark eyes. His name appears on a Receipt Roll for clothing dated July 28, 1864. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31, 1864 stated he was present. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31 to Oct. 31, 1864 stated that he was present. Admitted to CSA Hospital #3, Greensboro, NC with the complain “catarrhus,” on Jan. 18, 1865. His residence was listed as Monroe, NC. Was sent to another hospital on Jan 21, 1865. Was admitted to Pettigrew General Hospital #13, Raleigh, NC, on Feb. 4, 1865 with “Icferus.” Receipt for clothing issued at hospital dated Mar. 6, 1865. Prisoner of War record states he was paroled May 16, 1865 at Charlotte, NC.

Born about 1847 in Union County, NC and was by occupation a farmer when he enlisted on May 30, 1864 at Camp Holmes for the war. At time of enlistment, he was 17 years, 1 month, 23 days old. He was 5’ 7” tall, had fair complexion, lt. hair, blue eyes. His name appears on a Receipt Roll for clothing dated July 28, 1864. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31, 1864 stated he was present. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31 to Oct. 31, 1864 stated that he was “absent on detached service since Sept. 28, 1864.”

applied for pension stating that he had served in this unit. D. C. Trull applied for pension July 22, 1911 from Matthews,
Mecklenburg Co., NC at age 63. Application stated that he had enlisted in Co.
F, 2nd Regt. NC Troops in Feb. 1864. Affidavit in
file from C. J. Freeman of Matthews.

Philip Whitley – No record found, but he applied for pension from Union Co. and stated that he had been a member of this unit. Also, a letter from the Clerk of Superior Court dated April 18, 1935 and found in pension record of S. Alph Fincher of Union Co., stated that Philip Whitley had been a member of this unit and was still living and drawing a pension from Union Co. Philip Whitley applied for pension Sept. 22, 1928 from Monroe R.F.D. #7 at age 81. Application stated that he had enlisted in Jan. 1865 in Co. F, 2nd NC Jr. Reserves.
Thomas Early Williams [on rolls as T. E. Williams] – Sergeant.
Born about 1847 in Union County, NC and was by occupation a farmer when he enlisted as a Private on May 30, 1864 at Camp Holmes for the war. At time of enlistment, he was 17 years, 1 month, 29 days old. He was 6’ 1” tall, had dark complexion, dark hair, hazel eyes. His name appears on a Receipt Roll for clothing dated July 28, 1864. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31, 1864 stated he was present, and was listed as a Sergeant. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31 to Oct. 31, 1864 stated that he was present. Admitted to Pettigrew General Hospital #13, Raleigh, NC, with “diarrhea acute” on Feb. 4, 1865. Place of residence was Monroe, NC. Returned to duty Mar. 5. Receipt for clothing issued at hospital dated Mar. 6, 1865. Paroled at Charlotte, NC on May 6, 1865. Was serving on the Union County Pension Board April 18, 1935.[3] Thomas Early Williams applied for pension July 18, 1928 from Monroe at age 82. Application stated that he had enlisted in April 1864 and was applying for pension due to “old age and disease.

Born about 1847 in Anson County, NC and was by occupation a miller when he enlisted on May 30, 1864 at Camp Holmes for the war. At time of enlistment, he was 17 years, 5 months, 27 days old. He was 5’ 10-1/6” tall, had fair complexion, lt. hair, blue eyes. His name appears on a Receipt Roll for clothing dated July 28, 1864. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31, 1864 stated he was present. Company Muster Roll dated Aug. 31 to Oct. 31, 1864 stated that he was absent “went to hospital Oct. 9.” Shown on the 1860 census as a probable brother of William M. Willoughby who was in Co A, 48th NC Infantry.
Lee (Lon) Wolfe - possibly in this unit although no record found.
Newton Yarborough (also listed as Yarboro) [on rolls as N. Yarborough] – Private.
Admitted to Pettigrew General Hospital #13, Raleigh, NC on Apr. 8,
1865. Receipt for clothing issued Apr. 9, 1865. On list of “rebel
Prisoners of War” who were in hospital in Raleigh Apr. 13, 1865 when the city
was captured.
