M. DIGGS, of Anson county, has two boys,
brothers, that picked on different days this season the following weights of
cotton: 730, 714, 612, 603, 578, 572.
Mr. DIGGS has just returned home from Texas, where he had been to
find a “better place and a better country,” perfectly satisfied with the old
North State. He says he would not take five hundred dollars for the trip. This statement was made to me by Mr. DIGGS
on his return on Monday last.

-On last Thursday evening,
the family of Mr. W. H. HUBBARD,
residing in this county [Anson], about ten miles from town, were thrown into
great distress by the accidental killing of the eldest son, aged about fourteen
years. On the evening mentioned, just
before sunset, he, with several of his father’s neighbors and neighbors hands, was out fighting fire in the woods, which,
under the influence of a strong wind threatened great destruction of property
especially on his father’s plantation. [illegible]…
one of them blew off, falling on… and crushing the skull in, causing his death
in about an hour after being struck. The
loss of this promising boy has cast a deep gloom over the neighborhood in which
his parents reside. Wadesboro Argus,

June 15, 1860, DUE WEST TELESCOPE (Due West, S.C.)
-Departed this life at his residence in Yell Co., Ark., August 19th, 1859, Mr. D. M. WALKUP, in the 63rd year of his age. His disease was pneumonia. Mr. WALKUP was born and raised in Mecklenburg (now Union) Co., N. C. He was for many years a member and ruling elder in the Associate Reformed Church at Tirzah. He left his native state in the fall of 1855, and arrived in Arkansas about the 1st of January, 1856. He first stopped a year or two in Philips Co.–thence he removed to Columbia, and thence to Yell where he died.

Died in Union county, on the 9th inst., Mrs. Permelia
ROWLAND, wife of Sherwood ROWLAND, and daughter of John and Sarah
GRIFFIN. The deceased was fifty
years, five months and thirteen days old.
She professed religion and joined the Baptist Church twelve years ago, in which
she was a consistent member up to the time of her death.
As death approached she clung nearer and still nearer to her blessed Saviour, whom she so much loved. Though her
afflictions were great, she bore them with patience and courage, worthy of the christianity which she professed.
God, in his wisdom, has seen fit to pluck from the family alter one of its
brightest jewels, and its loss is irreparable. She was an affectionate
wife, and a kind mother. She leaves a husband and nine children, and a
large circle of friends, to mourn their loss.
“Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord; from henceforth they are at rest
from their labors, and their works do follow them.”
Why should we mourn departing friends
Or shake at death’s alarm
‘Tis but the voice that Jesus sends,
To call us to his arms.

the loss of one of our company – Mr. S. M.
HINSON, who died in the hospital at this place, of typhoid fever. The deceased was a son of the widow HINSON, of Union County. He was a true patriot and loved our Southern
Confederacy.
