-In Memoriam, Died: after a long and protracted illness, in the town of Monroe, on the 10th day of June 1879, Mr. William Henderson SIMPSON.  By reason of strength, the deceased had almost finished his three score year and ten, being 69 years, 11 months and 27 days old.  He was born and raised in Union county – then a part of Mecklenburg.  As a citizen he was faithful to his trust, serving as magistrate for about thirty years, and as Clerk of Court for about fourteen years – both of which offices he filled well.  In 1868, he was licensed to practice law, and continued in his profession up to the time of his sickness. – He was kind to the poor, the widow, and indulgent to the debtor.  At the age of 23 Mr. SIMPSON with some of his family, joined what was then known as “old Union church,” now Bethlehem Presbyterian church; and at the organization of the Presbyterian church in Monroe, or soon thereafter, he became one of its members; - thus, for over 40 years, he was a member of the church.  Mr. SIMPSON was confined to his bed for over three months. He bore his sickness with much resignation, and studied how to be as little trouble as possible to his kind and watchful wife and friends.  During his sickness, his wife, speaking to him about his condition, and apparent changes, he replied that he had made preparation for that change long ago.  One by one our friends are passing over the river.  A faithful husband, a kind father, and one possessing many virtues, has been called up higher.  He leaves a widow, eight children, and numerous friends to mourn his loss. – Bereaved widow, know thou that God has promised to be a father to the fatherless – disconsolate friends, know that God has promised to be a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.  Weep not, friends.  True, the father’s voice is hushed; his step will be heard no more, and to earth no more will he come, but you can go to him.  “My grace is sufficient; I will not leave you comfortless.”  “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so I would have told you.  I go to prepare a place for you.”  PASTOR.

-Died in this place, on the 6th inst., after a brief illness, Dr. Jas. W. DOSTER, age 65 years...

October 18, 1879, THE MONROE ENQUIRER (Monroe, Union County, N.C.)

-Homicide – At Sandy Plains Church in Anson county, while religious services were being conducted by Rev.’s O. J. BRENT and T. W. KENDALL, four desperate and lawless characters, the VAUGHAN brothers, became involved in a difficulty with two brothers by the name of GREGGS, which resulted in the death of Clem GRIGGS by one of the VAUGHAN’S, who, after shooting GREGGS, broke his skull and terribly lacerated his person with a dudgeon.  We learn that the murderer was then joined by his brothers, and that the quartette of ruffians, armed with pistols and clubs, defied the entire assemblage, and were allowed to depart at leisure, after cursing the congregation and breaking up the meeting.  These characters are well known as a dangerous set and have long been an annoyance to the community in which they reside.  Although far from advocating violent measures, yet we think that where a community and Justice is so long outraged and defied by a set of cut-throats, as has been that section in the vicinity of what is known as “Vaughantown,’ that Judge LYNCH should assert himself and thereby add to the peace and welfare of the whole community. The penitentiary has been cheated of its dues on one or more occasion by these offenders, who should have a quietus put upon their bullying and dangerous disposition by the people immediately concerned, if the law is to be thus successfully evaded.
