-We hear of a few serious cases of illness in Monroe-Typhoid Fever. The family of our friend Milas S. SECREST, living some 4 miles north of this place, have been sorely affected this Fall and Winter with this fever, having had ten cases... three cases proved fatal-first a babe 11 months old, some 4 weeks ago, and then two deaths occurred on the 25th of December ...these last being one son, Durant, aged 21 years and another son, Seabom (sic), aged 17 years. Three sons and 2 daughters are still sick...
-Mr. S. R. McLELLAND has opened a blacksmith shop on the corner of the lost East of Messrs. SHUTE & Sons grocery store. His old stand, on the ARMFIELD lot, has been purchased by Mr. Warren MALONE, lately of Pioneer Mills...
-Died in Polkton on the 22nd
ult., James W., son of R. P. and Mary SIMMONS,
aged 17 years.

-Died in Buford township on the 25th ult., of typhoid fever, Mr. E. R. YARBROUGH, aged 28 years.
-Married at the residence of the bride’s uncle, Mr. Jno. R. DUNN, on the morning of the 28th of January, by Rev. O. J. BRENT, Mr. Willie T. WEBB to Miss Kate SHAW. All of Anson county.
-Mr. John Flow recovered his overcoat a few days ago, and the Negro Jim McManus, who stole it, is now in jail.

-Mr. Editor: On the 24th of last January, I had the pleasure
of attending the closing exercises of a writing school taught by our popular
and worthy young teacher, Mr. O.C. Curlee. He has made a credible display of his skill as a teacher of this art by
the progress of his class, which, when taken into consideration, with the short
space of time engaged at it, is somewhat a wonder. The principle on which Mr.
C. teaches this art is so simplified that any one who
will attend his school must become interested, and hence be very apt to learn
the theory. I take great pleasure in recommending him to all who wish to make
progress in this branch of education. I feel that I could not have made better
use of my time and money. The class
having appointed Messrs. G.A. Marsh, James Little, and James F. Carelock for the examining com., the specimens of the
students writing were given to them for examination. After making a careful
inspection, they awarded prizes as follows: For best penmanship, Joseph Griffin; for second best penmanship, Milard F. Huntley; for greatest improvement, Harvey T. Antry; 2nd greatest improvement, Miss Jane Parker. The school was here dismissed,
after a short, enthusiastic and appropriate talk by Mr. Curlee, to his pupils; after which dinner was announced – the hospitable
friends and patrons having brought well filled baskets, - which was much
enjoyed by the crowd. – M.F.H.

-W.G. KENNEDY
appeared before U.S. Commissioner WARING
on Tuesday, charged with making counterfeit silver coin. The evidence adduced
(sic) was sufficient to demand a justified bond to assure his appearance at
next term of the U.S. Court; not being able to give this bond he was committed
to jail. KENNEDY was arrested some time ago, together with G.W. WALDEN, on the same charge, but was discharged
on account of lack of evidence, which it seems, the Commissioner has since
obtained. At the time of his former arrest, he was living at Beaver Dam, but soon
after moved to Stanly, where he was living at the time of the latter

-A vicious buck attacked Mrs. POPE,
wife of Mr. Kirby POPE, near Tulin, Cabarrus county, and broke a leg and otherwise very seriously injured
her. Mrs. POPE is advanced in
years and her recovery is doubtful. This
we learn from the Concord Sun.

-Died on the 27th of Feb. last, Rev. N. FUNDERBURK of Lancaster County, S.C.. Age 83 years, 3 months and 6 days. He leaves a wife and 12 children to mourn his loss.
-Married in Wadesboro, N.C. on
the evening of the 3rd, Mr. Venable WILSON
and Miss Sallie D. GRIMSLEY.

-Mr. Charles SMITH of Anson, died a few days ago.
-Leander McMANUS, of Lancaster county, several weeks since, came to Monroe and sold two bales of cotton, sending his two sons...back to their home and mother with a message that he would return in a day or two. Taking the train to Charlotte, was married to a widow lady of respectability, and took up an abode near Winston. His first and lawful wife ...traced him up, discovered what had occurred, had him arrested, and last week was convicted of bigamy.
-Married on the 24th ult., at the residence of the bride’s father, by Rev. M. H. HOYLE, Mr. J. Edward BLACK to Miss M. Lizzie FUNDERBURK. All of Mecklenburg County.
-Married in Buford township, on the 11th, by Rev. J. B. BAILEY, Mr. Judge BELK and Miss Susan RICHARDSON, daughter of J. M. RICHARDSON.
-Married in Sandy Ridge Township

-Leander McMANUS recently of Lancaster County, S.C., and convicted in Mecklenburg Superior Court of bigamy and sentenced for ten years, was killed a few days ago by a guard on the Chapel Hill road, while attempting to make his escape.
-Married in Sandy Ridge township, on the 25th inst., by Rev. R. T. N. STEPHENSON, Mr. J. Ellis AUSTIN and Miss Jennie [REA?], of Jackson Township.

-Mr. George W. FUNDERBURK, a former citizen of this county, but who now resides in Georgia the last ten years, is now on a visit to relatives in this county.
-We regret to learn of the
destruction by fire, of two residences in this county during the past week. In
the first instance, the dwelling of Mrs. Rebecca STACK, some 12 miles South of this
place...Mrs. STACK lost all her
household goods, clothing, etc., as also did Mr. Thos. A. GARLAND and family, who lived in the same house, and Dr. LACKEY, who boarded there... During the
progress of the fire, Miss Jennie DEES,
an elderly lady who lived in a house in Mrs. STACK’S yard... fell to the ground... dying in a short time after
being found. The second instance was the burning of the dwelling of Mrs. LEMMOND, widow
of Miles M. LEMMOND,
some 12 or 15 miles North of here, which occurred on
Wednesday evening...

-Mr. M. P. STONE received a telegram yesterday evening announcing the sudden death of his father in law, Mr. WATSON, a citizen of Lexington, which occurred in Charlotte yesterday.

-We learn that Mrs. Margaret CUTHBERTSON, widow of the late W. M. CUTHBERTSON, was found dead in her bed
late yesterday afternoon. Her health, owing to her advanced age - 82 years -
had been quite feeble for some time...

-Mr. John C. PUETT, son of Rev. J. W. PUETT, a former resident of this place, was married in Dallas, N.C. on the 10th inst., to miss Mary L. FRONEBARGER.
-Considerable sickness still prevails among the colored portion of our population. A youth, John CARELOCK, died Thursday, of typhoid fever. A child was also interred this week.
-Revenue smellers are on the war path – three or four in town this week, nosing around for illicit whiskey and tobacco. We have heard of no seizures.
-White Mice – Mr. M.A. WALTERS, of this county, brought an addition to our collection of natural curiosities a few days ago – a pair of white mice.

-In Lanes Creek township on the 5th inst., Mr. Bennie MORGAN, son of W.D. MORGAN, Esq., aged about 21 years.
-In Vermont, Texas, on the 25th
ult., Mr. Sandy MORGAN, a former
citizen of Anson County. [Note: The location should probably have said Mount
Vernon Township instead of Vermont. The 1880 census shows a Sandy Morgan from
NC in Mount Vernon Township, Franklin Co, TX.]
-Ex-Sheriff Jas. A. JOHNSTON of Chesterfield Co, S.C. was
buried on last Sunday at the Joseph BURCH

September 10, 1880, THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER (Mecklenburg County, NC)
-A Probable Murder – We learn that a difficulty took place at WILSON’S Old Store, situate in Union county, N.C., near the State line, on Saturday last, between Hood RICHARDSON and Alex. BAKER, in which the latter received two severe cuts from a knife. Our informant states that BAKER’S life was despaired of, the wounds being considered necessarily fatal. – Lancaster (S.C.) Ledger.
