Wingate School, Wingate, N.C.

Wingate was established in 1895 by Baptist families in North and South Carolina
who wanted their children to receive a sound education based in Christian values.
The school was named in honor of Washington Manly Wingate, president of Wake
Forest College from 1856 to 1879 and a well-known Baptist preacher. During its first
class session in 1896, Wingate Academy enrolled 175 students. The named was changed
to Wingate Junior College in 1923. In 1978, it became a Senior College, and in 1995,
it became Wingate University.  Wingate is about 6 miles from Monroe, NC.
