Wingate School, Wingate, N.C. Wingate was established in 1895 by Baptist families in North and South Carolina who wanted their children to receive a sound education based in Christian values. The school was named in honor of Washington Manly Wingate, president of Wake Forest College from 1856 to 1879 and a well-known Baptist preacher. During its first class session in 1896, Wingate Academy enrolled 175 students. The named was changed to Wingate Junior College in 1923. In 1978, it became a Senior College, and in 1995, it became Wingate University. Wingate is about 6 miles from Monroe, NC. |
