Lily Burnand

Music Hall Artist

“Lovely, Lively” Lily Burnand was a music Hall artist who flourished in the 1890s and the 1900s.   Born Eleanor Elizabeth DAY in Mile End, London in 1865, she was the daughter of Henry and Sarah Ann Day.

She went on the stage in 1880 with another girl in an act called “The Sisters Burnand”.    Lily soon broke away and went abroad, spending several years touring Europe.    During this time she married William Henry DORIS whose stage name was Will Kendall and had a daughter, Lillian in France in about 1884.

They returned to England in about 1890 where her second daughter Marie Elizabeth was born in Poplar. But by this time Will was ill and he died in late 1892.    Lily carried on with her career and in May 1893 she went to the U.S.A., starring at Tony Pastor’s theatre in New York.    During this visit she married Michel KIRSCHEN

This marriage does not seem to have lasted long as she had a daughter in late 1895 without naming the father on the birth certificate This daughter does not appear on the 1901 census, although her two elder daughters do. Lily and her two daughters were living in Brixton but they appear under the name PARIS. This was probably a confusion over the birthplace of her elder daughter.

Her career prospered and she can be traced through the trade papers during the next 10-15 years, including an "Old Fashioned Music Hall" at the Palladium in 1923.

However, what happened to her later and when and where she died, remain a mystery.  Perhaps you know?
