The Elmore Family of Montgomery County, MS

Preston Elmore Family and Descendants

James R. Elmore Family and Descendants

Alphabetical Name Listing

The Elmore families of Preston and James Riley that relocated to Carroll County, Mississippi in the late 1850's left numerous descendants in the present counties of Montgomery, Webster, and Grenada, although the surname has almost disappeared from the locations.

The Elmore "boys" gave Tennessee as their birth places on most census records but it is uncertain just how far removed from their birth place they were upon entering the present Montgomery County area.  There were numerous Elmore families noted in the 1850 and prior censuses in Tennessee but also others scattered in several other Southern states, Alabama, Georgia, etc.  At present, there is no known "reason" for their relocation, no other known associated families except those that they married into.  Also, no known antecedents at present.

Preston Elmore and James R. Elmore have been assigned as brothers due to geographical and chronological circumstance.  Both are noted in the 1870 census for Carroll County, MS residing in the Hays Creek area of present Montgomery County, MS.  Township 19 Range 6. Preston's home noted as house # 95 on page 653-B and James as house # 98 on page 654-A of this census.  Neighbors include the Kent, Adair, and especially the Thompson and Rowland (Rolling, etc.) families.  James' apparent wife, Isabella (from latter records), appears to be the same as Isabella Hill noted in the home of David Rowland in the 1860 census recorded one household from Preston Elmore, James Elmore has not been located in the 1860 record.  There is an apparent relationship with a Peggy THOMPSON between the two families of Preston and James.  In 1870 Peggy is noted in the adjoining home to Preston, in 1880 she is noted as residing next door to James. Peggy's age is noted as 70 in 1870 and 90 in 1880, birth circa 1790-1800 and in South Carolina.
