Ashley Grant Miller was the eighth and last child of The Reverend Charles Carroll Miller and Miriam Cross Dyer. He was born in Michigan on 27 September 1866.
His Baptist minister and Republican father likely chose Ashly's middle name based on then-war hero General Ulysses S. Grant, continuing the tradition started with his seventh child, Judson Lincoln Miller. It is known that The Reverend Miller was a solid Republican, one of the first in Michigan's Kent County to support Abraham Lincoln for President. He let his belief be known to any that would listen to him.
Ashley was also a Baptist minister. At some point in his life, he lived in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and later was a resident of Reno and Sparks, Nevada. His first marriage was in 1894 to Carlotta Depew (or Carrie May Depeu). They had 4 children, all born in Nevada: Charles Judson, b. 02-11-1897; Kathryn Mary, b. 02-13-1899; Frances Elizabeth,b. 10-26-1901; and Donald Grant, b. 01-06-1904. His second marriage was to Ethel Edna Carney in 1908. They had one child - Ethel Claire, b. 01-20-1914.
There's no mention of "Uncle Ashley" in the 1900 Washoe County, NV, census, but he does appear in the 1910 census. Also, I found a mention of wife Ethel E. as having registered a car in Washoe Co. in 1916 and 1917.

Reverend Miller apparently ditched the ministry and became an attorney in the late 1890s. After returning from Idaho in 1902, he was for awhile the Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Montcalm County, working closely with his brother, my G-Gf Frank A. Miller. After his father C.C. Miller died in 1907, A. Grant Miller, as he preferred to be called, moved to the Reno area. The Nevada State Achives has info on him related to U. S. Senate campaign finance filings in 1914 and 1920. He ran for the U.S. Senate in 1914 as the Socialist Party nominee and in 1920 on the Republican ticket. Other archived information indicates State Supreme Court cases where he filed Writs of Habeas Corpus in 1932 and 1934, plus an action by The State Bar Association against him in 1935. A check of U.S. Senators during those years shows others serving the State of Nevada.
He died 31 January 1961 at the age of 94. Ashley was listed as the only surviving sibling in the obit of his brother, my GGrandfather Frank Augustus Miller, who passed away 27 April 1945.
