Depending on your genealogical needs, you can either pay to join or access this resource through a library for free. I was surprised to find out that they do have a good amount of information related to North Carolina, especially birth and death dates. There are also census records (including every-name indexes), WWI draft registration cards, and information on Civil War soldiers.
Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System
Duplin County, NC Register of Deeds
This is probably the most genealogy-friendly ROD website that I have seen. If
you have any Duplin County ancestors, you should pay it a visit. And if you
don't have any Duplin ancestors, you should still look at it to see what I
believe an online ROD should be like. A large portion of my research is
indebted to the information provided here. Not only is it attractively
presented, but it is also easy to use.
Duplin County, NCGenWeb Project
One of the most active county pages I have seen, Diane Siniard updates the
website often. There is a large variety of information on Duplin County and
its people, and I check in a couple of times a week to see what's new.
Eastern North Carolina Digital Library
HeritageQuest Online
You need to access this website through a library (for free) if you want to
look at more than the first page. I have used it exclusively for census
records, but there are other features there. Not all of the North Carolina
population censuses are online yet, and most are indexed by the head-of-
household only.

Wilson Library (UNC-CH)
This library has a great collection of materials online and offline. If you
search, you can find interviews with some of the Cavenaugh descendants about
Hurricane Floyd online.
