"Haw Branch Man Passed Thursday

James Kinsey Carter, 81, Prominent Farmer, Buried On Friday Afternoon

Richlands, July 30. -- James Kinsey Carter, 81-year-old resident and prominent farmer of the Haw Branch section, near Richlands, died at his home Thursday night at eleven o'clock.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the home, with Rev. Ivy T. Poole, pastor of the Methodist church here, in charge of the last rites. Burial followed in the family cemetery at Haw Branch.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Ellen Carter, and three daughters, Mrs. W. B. Carter, Mrs. W. H. Edwards, and Mrs. L. Straughn, all of Beulaville, and one son, J B. Carter, of Richlands."

"Last Rites For J.J. Cavenaugh

Aged North East Man Succumbed Saturday Following Brief Illness

Funeral services for Joseph J. Cavenaugh, 74, who passed away at his home in the North East section on last Friday following a brief illness, were held from the North East Free Will Baptist church on Saturday at 3:30 p. m. Rev. A. H. Carter, a former pastor of the Church, conducted the last rites assisted by Rev. K. D. Brown, pastor, and Rev. Edward Anderson, a former pastor. Interment followed in the Cavenaugh cemetery.
The deceased, who had spent his entire life in the North East community, was a man of sterling character and was well known and highly regarded throughout this section of the County.
Surviving is the widow, five sons and one daugteh:r [sic] Claude, Robert R., Joseph, Paul and Herman Cavenaugh and Miss Sallie Cavenaugh, all of whom reside in the North East community."

"Train-Car Crash Takes Four Lives

Millard and Adrian Teachey, Mrs. Newton and Baby Killed Near Watha

Burgaw, Feb. 28 -- Four persons were killed instantly early this morning when the car in which they were riding was struck by a southbound Atlantic Coast Line railroad freight train near Watha, Sheriff Jack Brown, of Pender county, reported.
The dead are:
Millard Teachey and Adrian Teachey, brothers, of Watha.
Mrs. Paulie Newton, sister of the Teacheys, and her 18-months old baby.
Sheriff Brown said that he had not completed his investigation last night. An inquest into the deaths will probably be held next week, he said.
Highway patrolmen who investigated the deaths said that the car was struck by the train when it drove on the tracks just as the train was approaching the highway crossing, about a half mile from Watha. There were no signal warnings or watchman at the crossing.
The bodies of the four were taken to the Quinn and McGowan funeral home at Warsaw. Funeral services are to be held for all four Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Complete arrangements for the funerals had not been made last night.
The accident occurred about 8:30 o'clock this morning.
The three adults are survived by their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ike Teachey, three brothers, Elbert Teachey, J. W. Teachey and Aubrey Teachey, and a sister, Katherine Teachey. Mrs. Newton is also survived by her husband, George Newton, and two daughters, Annette and Annelle Newton, twins, six years of age."

"Deep Bottom Man Claimed By Death

Last Rites Held On Monday For John English, World War Veteran

John English, 50, World War veteran, passed away at his home in the Deep Bottom section early Saturday afternoon following a long period of ill health. He had but recently returned from the Veterans Hospital in Atlanta where he underwent treatment for several months.
Funeral services for the deceased were held from the home Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. Ben Rose, Presbyterian minister of Chinquapin, conducted the last rites and interment followed in the Cavenaugh cemetery. Members of the local American Legion Post assisted in the service at the grave, the following serving as pallbearers: F. B. Haree, H. B. Carter, A. F. Cavenaugh, A. E. James, L. F. Jackson, and J. D. Stokes. Taps were sounded by Scout Elwyn Williams, member of the Wallace Troop.
Surviving the deceased is his mother, Mrs. Ada Cavenaugh [sic], and four brothers, Clyde, C. D., Dock, and J. D. English, all of the Deep Bottom section."

"Will D. Cavenaugh Funeral At 5 Today

Funeral services for Will D. Cavenaugh, 48, a long-time and popular resident of Wallace will be held from the Wallace Presbyterian church Thursday afternoon at 5 o'clock.
Mr. Cavenaugh, who had been in ill health for some time, died in the James Walker Memorial hospital on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
For a number of years he had been a member of the staff of Cavenaugh Motor company here in Wallace and was held in high esteem by his fellow associates and the business men and public of the town and county.
Besides a number of relatives in Wallace and the county, Mr. Cavenaugh is survived by his wife, Ruby Jones Cavenaugh, three daughters, Mrs. William Batts of Rose Hill, Elizabeth and Carolyn of Wallace, and one son, W. D., Jr., of the Panama Canal Zone."

He is survived by a daughter, Juanita Savage of Wilmington; two brothers, Joel Savage and Jessie Savage of Wilmington; and by six sisters, Mrs. C. D. Morse of Bladenboro, Mrs. George Kaletus and Mrs. F. Wood, of Washingtin, D. C., Mrs. Marion Batten of Henderson, and Mrs. Z. L. Brown and Mrs. E. Carr of Wilmington."

Mrs. J. J. Cavenaugh, Beloved Resident of the Northeast Community, Died at the Home of Her Daughter, Mrs. Sallie McClung, Friday Morning, October 16.

Mrs. J. J. Cavenaugh, 73, beloved citizen of Northeast community, near Wallace, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sallie McClung, on Friday morning, October 16, following a brief illness resulting from a fall she received earlier last week. She had been in declining health for several years, but was active most of the time. She was one of the oldest residents of Northeast community and a faithful member of the Northeast Free Will Baptist Church.
Mrs. Cavenaugh was well-known by her friends as "Mrs. Patsy." Her pastor, Rev. K. D. Brown said, "I want to say that she was the best woman in the world; but I will say, she was one of the best women I have ever known." What could be a more fitting tribute for a good woman?
Her husband, J. J. Cavenaugh, preceded her in death over two years ago.
She is survived by six sons and one daughter, Mrs. Sallie McClung, with whom she has made her home for the past several years; Claude E., Robert R., W. Joseph, Paul M., Herman J., and Walter A. Cavenaugh; also by 21 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at the N. E. Free Will Baptist church, on last Saturday afternoon, at 3:00 o'clock with Rev. K. D. Brown of Burgaw in charge of the funeral. Interment followed in the Cavenaugh Cemetery.
Active pall bearers were O. A. Cavenaugh, P. W. Carter, George Teachey, Howard Atkinson, Rice Register and Corbet Pierce."

Mrs. Nellie Cavenaugh Wallace, 67, ife [sic] of William Chasten Wallace died at her home in Teachey Wednesday morning after a short illness.
Funeral services were held from the Teachey Baptist Church Thursday afternoon at 3, conducted by the Rev. R. W. Acree of Burgaw. Interment followed in the family cemetery in the Pastors Branch Community.
Surviving are her husband and the following children: Mrs. Johnnie Dixon, Mrs. Ernest Dixon, J. L. Wallace of the Home community and Will H. Wallace, USA, Jamestown, R. I."

Tobie Byrd

"Toby Byrd Dies at Home Near Kinston

Toby Byrd, 45, a prominent farmer from the Mewborn's Crossroads section near Kinston, died about noon Friday at his home from a heart attack. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p. m. Saturday from the home. Rev. Clifton Rice, Free Will Baptist minister of Kinston, will officiate. Burial will follow in the L. P. Tyndall cemetery near old Pink Hill.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Agnes Byrd; three sons, Horace, Tommy and Johnny; four daughters, Lena Mae, Agnes Mae and Carol, all of the home, and Mrs. Kirby Moody of Deep Run; one brother, Nathan Byrd of Deep Run; four sisters, Mesdames Geneva Byrd, Henry Phillips, Sudie Stroud and Herbert Hill, all of Deep Run; his mother, Mrs. Fannie Byrd, who made her home with her son, and two grandchildren."

Willie Janie Rouse Rackley

"Mrs. J. R. Rackley Funeral Held at Charity Thursday

She Died At Her Home Wednesday Night Following A Brief Illness. She Was The Daughter Of The Late David William And Mary Jane Rouse.

Mrs. Janie Rouse Rackley, 66, died at her home near Rose Hill, on last Wednesday night at 11:20 o'clock. She had been seriously ill for five weeks following a stroke of paralysis which left her practically helpless.
Mrs. Rackley was the daughter of the late David William and Mary Jane Rouse of Duplin county, and she had spent her entire life in Duplin county.
She is survived by here husband, C. P. Rackley, of the home, one adopted son, Pvt. David R. Rackley of Los Angeles, California, three brothers, A. J., W. J., and Carson Rouse of Rose Hill, two sisters, Mrs. Ludie English and Mrs. Florence Carter of Wallace and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at Charity Methodist Church Thursday afternoon at 5 o'clock by her pastor the Rev. C. T. Rogers. Burial followed in the Clay Hill Cemetery.
She was a faithful member of Charity Methodist Church, and her cheerful and loving dispostion had won for her a host of friends, both white and colored.
Pallbearers were nephews, nieces served as flower girls."

Robert B. Wallace, 73, who resided 10 miles east of Kenansville in the Brock community, died at his home Sunday night. Funeral services were held at the Wallace family cemetery Tuesday at 3 p. m.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lula A. Wallace; one brother, J. G. Wallace of Rose Hill; and the following children, Mrs. Raymond Teachey of Rose Hill, Mrs. James M. Jarman of Jacksonville, Mrs. Edgar Williams of Beulaville, S|Sgt. William T. Wallace, A A C, Walker Field, Kan., Mrs. Oscar Brock, Clifton and Ray Bryant Wallace of the home community."
