Chinquapin - Ellis Bryan Hatcher, 83, died unexpectedly Saturday morning at Duplin General Hospital in Kenansville.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Edgerton Funeral Chapel in Beulaville conducted by the Rev. Frank Sawyer. Burial will follow in the Tom Lanier Cemetery, Rt. 1, Chinquapin.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bertie Lanier Hatcher; one daughter, Mrs. Rovene Stewart of Chinquapin; two sons, Earl Hatcher of Kenansville and Edward Hatcher of Hampton, Va.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A native of Duplin County, he was the son of the late Jeff and Sallie Jones Hatcher. He was a retired farmer; a veteran of World War I, serving in the U.S. Army; and was a member of American Legion Post 156 in Wallace and a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church.
Casketbearers will be Anthony Hatcher, Dana Hatcher, Raymond Hatcher, David R. Smith, Mac Hunter and Gordon Sloan."

Wallace - Charles Hughes Cavanaugh, 65, Rt. 2, Wallace, died Friday morning in Veteran's Hospital in Durham after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Edgerton Funeral Chapel conducted by President Tharon Shepard. Burial will follow in the Cavanaugh Cemetery.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Pauline Serber of Hampton, Va., Mrs. Geraldine Townsend of Smithfield, Va., and Mrs. Sharon Yvonne McDaniel of Tampa, Fla.; two sons, Arnold Cavanaugh of Hampton, Va., and A1/C Marcus Owen Cavanaugh of Biloxi, Miss.; his mother, Mrs. Veda Hanchey Cavanaugh of Wallace; two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Holton of Richmond and Mrs. Willie Wells of Wallace; three brothers, R.C. Cavanaugh and Frank Cavanaugh, both of Wallace, and Samuel M. Cavanaugh of Whiteville; and nine grandchildren.
A native of Duplin County, he was a retired carpenter and was the son of the late Roland Cavanaugh and Mrs. Veda Hanchey Cavanaugh. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy.
Casketbearers will be Sammy Cavanaugh, David Cavanaugh, Jimmy Cavanaugh, Andy Cavanaugh, Stewart Wells and Gary Wells.
The family will receive at the Edgerton Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and will be at Mrs. Veda Cavanaugh's residence, Rt. 2, Wallace, at other times.

Mr. Willis W. Norris, 67, of 722 Parkway, Blvd. died Monday morning following a brief illness in Cape Fear Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Norris was born in Duplin County on Dec. 26, 1912 and was the son of the late J.M. and Ann Cavenaugh Norris. He retired in 1977. Mr. Norris was a member of the Sunset Park Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Virginia Mobley Norris of the home; a son, Michael R. Norris of Fort Lewis, Wash.; a brother, Kenneth Norris of Wallace; a sister, Mrs. Horace (Hilma) Roberts of Topsail Island and a grandson, Reid Norris of Fort Lewis, Wash.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Coble's Oleander Chapel with the Rev. Horace Jackson officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
The family will be at their home, 722 Parkway Blvd.
Memorials may be sent to the Sunset Park Baptist Church, Building Fund."

Olive; one son, Albert David Summerlin of Kinston Rt. 9; four sisters, Mrs. Donie Whitfield, Mrs. Letha Summerlin and Mrs. Penny Southerland, all of Mt. Olive, and Mrs. Kathleen Carter of Calypso; two brothers, Robert Summerlin of Temple, Okla. and Randolph Summerlin of Mt. Olive; and seven grandchildren. Mr. Cavenaugh is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alma Rivenbark Cavenaugh of Burgaw; three daughters, Mrs. Ruth Harris and Mrs. Sadie Jordan, both of Burgaw and Mrs. Emily Poste of Detroit, Mich.; five sons, John H. Cavenaugh, Felton Cavenaugh and Eugene Cavenaugh, all of Detroit, Mich., Lawrence Cavenaugh of Goldsboro and Larry Cavenaugh of Watha; one brother, Frank Cavenaugh of Richlands; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Wallace - Clyde English, 90, Rt. 2, Wallace, died Wednesday afternoon in Bladen County Hospital in Elizabethtown after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. from the Edgerton Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Timothy Creel and Rev. Rupert Rivenbark. Burial will follow in the Cavenaugh Cemetery, Rt. 2, Wallace.
He is survived by four sons, Harry English of Burgaw, LeRoy English of Philadelphia, Pa., James English of White Lake and Homer English of Wallace; one brother, Dock English of Wallace; 13 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
A native of Duplin County, he was the son of the late Thomas and Ada Bradshaw English. He was a retired farmer and had been a lifelong resident of the Wallace area. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1954.
Casketbearers will be George Parker, Norman English, Mike English, Mark English, Bryan English and Lee English.
The family will be at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Homer English, Rt. 3, Wallace.

He is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Wendell Evans of Magnolia, Mrs. Durwood Parker of Rose Hill, Mrs. Kenneth Crawford of Jacksonville and Mrs. Frank Wiciak of Genoa, Ohio; one half-sister, Mrs. Marcel Crawley of Wallace; three brothers, Ronald Rivenbark, Eugene Rivenbark and Pearlie Rivenbark Jr., all of Wallace; six half-brothers, Raymond Stone of High Point, Oscar Rivenbark, Edwin Rivenbark, Allen Rivenbark, Cameron M. Rivenbark and Mance Rivenbark, all of Wallace.
A native of Duplin County, he was the son of the late Pearlie and Maggie Southerland Rivenbark Sr. He was a retired trucker and was a member of the Island Creek Baptist Church.

Mrs. Fannie Ella Cavenaugh, 89, of 121 Antoinette Drive died Wednesday afternoon in Hillhaven Convalescent Center following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Cavenaugh was born on April 1, 1891, in Wilmington and was the daughter of the late John and Minnie Lawhorne and the wife of the late J.W. Cavenaugh. She was a member of the Battle Park Baptist Church.
Survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Magnolia Mintz, Mrs. Ida May Guthrie, Mrs. Sadie L. Yopp and Mrs. Carrie Watkins, all of Wilmington, Mrs. Mary Bonham of Rocky Point and Miss Nolan Cavenaugh of Wilmington; two sons, Johnnie Cavenaugh of Bolivia and Louis A. Cavenaugh of Fayetteville; 35 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Coble's Oleander Chapel with the Rev. S.L. Doty Jr. and the Rev. B.A. Porter officiating. Interment will follow in the Bryan Cemetery.
Casketbearers will be the grandsons of Mrs. Cavenaugh.

Mr. Cavenaugh was a native of Onslow County, son of the late John E. and Betsy Cavenaugh. He was a veteran of World War I and a retired farmer.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday at Union Grove Pentecostal Free Will Holiness Church with Rev. Horace Johnson and Rev. J.E. Thornton officiating. Burial will follow in Devotional Gardens.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Maddie Sill Cavenaugh; a son, John E. Cavenaugh Jr. of Route 5, Dunn; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Skinner and Drew Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. tonight and at other times at the home of his son, John E. Cavenaugh Jr. of Rt. 5, Dunn."

Mr. Kilpatrick was the president of the Duplin County Farm Bureau and was on the state board of the Farm Bureau. He was a member of the Agricultural Business Association and past chairman of the board of Duplin General Hospital. He was a mason and also a deacon of Kenansville Baptist Church.
Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday from the Community Funeral Home Chapel in Warsaw, with Rev. Lauren Sharpe officiating. Interment will be in Devotional Gardens.
Surviving are his wife, Eva S. Kilpatrick of the home; four daughters, Mrs. Beverly K. Thompson of Rocky Mount, Mrs. Nancy K. Dr. William Howard Carter, minister, college president and civic leader, died Wednesday at Wayne Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. from the Edgewood Evangelical Baptist Church. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery with Woodmen of the World rites.
Dr. Carter was founder and president of the William Carter College and the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Goldsboro and served as pastor of the Edgewood Evangelical Baptist Church, which he founded, as well as Colliers Chapel Church at Linden.
A pastor for 52 years, he was licensed to preach at 13 by the Pine Level Free Will Baptist Church. He later served in several churches in eastern North Carolina including 12 years at the Tabernacle Church in Goldsboro.
Dr. Carter was a member of the North Carolina Academy of Science, held a life membership in the Royal Society of Literature of London, was president of the Southern Accrediting Association of Bible Colleges and Seminaries, incorporator and president of Teen Challenge of North Carolina, Inc., and president of the Evangelical Broadcasting Association.
He had been a member of the Woodmen of the World since 1931. He had served that organization as state president and was a past head counsel for the Woodmen of the World of North Carolina. He also served as a member of the National Legislative Committee and for 14 years was a member of the National Judiciary Committee.
Dr. Carter served as president and secretary-treasurer of the Goldsboro Ministerial Association. He also served as president of the Wayne County Ministerial Association and during his term of office the chaplaincy program was begun at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
For many years he served as chairman of the Community Affairs Committee which was responsible for arranging communitywide Thanksgiving services and Easter Sunrise services. He also served as a member of the Advisory Council of the USO, the American Red Cross, and the Wayne County Chapter for Retarded Children.
Dr. Carter organized the Good Samaritan Club, which he served as director, which carries on an extensive program to alleviate suffering by providing poundings and medicine, for needy people. He also founded the Eastern North Carolina Fifth Sunday Sing which still meets at the Edgewood Church.
Several years ago, Dr. Carter was selected by the American Ministerial Associatioin as one of five outstanding clergymen in the United States.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jessie Byrd Carter; five sisters, Mrs. Thelma Moye of Fayetteville, Mrs. Trudy Rabil of Smithfield, Mrs. Rachel Brown of Selma, Mrs. Ann Komlenic of Pittsburg, Pa., and Mrs. Christine Wheeler of Indianapolis, Ind.; one brother, Woodrow Carter of Smithfield.
After 5 p.m. today, the body will lie in state at William Carter College until Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at the college during these hours.
The family requests that memorials be made to the William Carter College."

She is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Myrtle W. Brown of Rose Hill, Mrs. Eunice Hall of Wallace, Mrs. Mary Lillie Norris of Chinquapin, Mrs. Evelyn Scheel of Hendersonville, Tenn., Mrs. Lena Gerhardstin of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mrs. Sara Catherine Boykin of Wyndell; two sons, Willie M. Futrell of Rose Hill and Allen Futrell of Magnolia; three sisters, Mrs. Frankie Register of Beulaville, Mrs. Ruby Atkinson of Wallace, Mrs. Ruth Annie Butler of Knoxville, Tenn.; 32 grandchildren and 52 great-grandchildren.
A native of Duplin County, she was the daughter of the late H.J. and Sara Cavenaugh Batts and was the widow of Richard (Dick) Futrell. She was a member of Sharon Baptist Church in Chinquapin.
Casketbearers will be J.S. Sandlin, Roy Sanderson, Johnnie Sanderson, Bradley Sanderson, Pete Brinkley and D.C. Futrell.
The family will be at Edgerton Funeral Home in Wallace from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and at the residence of Mrs. Eunice Hall, 209 West Clement St., in Wallace at other times.

He was retired from Horton Industries.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lucy Norris Clark of the home; two sons, Robert E. Clark of Rocky Mount and H. Russell Clark of Wilmington; and five grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Greenlawn Memorial Park by the Rev. Ray Ward.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Falcon Children Home in Falcon.

The body was taken from the Edgerton Funeral Home in Wallace to Mr. Cavenaugh's residence at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday where it will remain until 1 p.m. Thursday when it will be taken to the church to lie in state on ehour prior to the service.

Wallace - John Ressie Cavenaugh, age 74, died unexpectedly Monday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clayton Jones, Route 2, Willard.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Edgerton Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Samuel W. Swinson. Burial will follow in the Cavenaugh Cemetery, Route 2, Wallace.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Clayton (Mary Virginia) Jones of Willard and Mrs. Durward (Ann) Fisher of Magnolia; one son, Morris Cavenaugh of Magnolia; three sisters, Mrs. Florence Cavenaugh, Mrs. Melva Stroud and Mrs. Bessie Cavenaugh all of Wallace; one brother, Mike Cavenaugh of Turkey; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A native of Duplin County, he was the son of John William and Lucy Kate Teachey Cavenaugh. He was a retired farmer and was a member of the Oak Grove Freewill Baptist Holiness Church and was a ruling elder of the church.
Casketbearers will be Terry Jones, Kenneth Lanier, Kenneth West, Louis Cavenaugh, Wendell Gray and Earl Cavenaugh.
Honorary bearers will be deacons of the Oak Grove Church.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from the Edgerton Funeral Chapel in Wallace conducted by Rev. Allen Griffin and Rev. Phillip Denton. Burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Park near Watha.
He is survived by two sons, Donald Lanier and Tracy Lanier Sr., both of Burgaw; two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Bradham of Chinquapin and Mrs. Bertie Hatcher of Beulaville; 20 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
A native of Duplin County, he was the son of the late Zeb Thomas and Victoria Lanier. He was a retired farmer, a veteran of World War I, having served in the U.S. Army, and was a former member of the Red Door Baptist Church.

Arvad Merrill Rouse Sr., 84, of 707 North Orange Avenue in Dunn, died Sunday at Betsy Johnson Memorial Hospital.
A native of Duplin County, Rouse was the son of the late Owen N. and Della Rouse. He came to Dunn in 1931 and operated Rouse Truck Lines. Since 1953, he had been associated with Southern Mercantile in Fayetteville.
He had driven himself to work on Friday.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Divine Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Loftis officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Surviving are: his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Johnson Rouse; one son, A. Merrill Rouse Jr., of Rockville, Md.; one daughter, Mrs. Ann Rouse Warren of Dunn; two sisters, Mrs. Olga Carpenter of Kinston and Mrs. Lizzie Borzillo of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; sisx grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mr. Rouse will be carried to the home at 5 p.m. today and the family will receive friends there tonight.

Chinquapin - Mrs. Bertie Lou Lanier Hatcher, 77, died early Saturday morning at her resident [sic], Route 1, Chinquapin after a long illness.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. from the Edgerton Funeral Chapel in Beulaville conducted by Rev. Miss Georgianna Brabban. Burial will follow in the Tom Lanier Cemetery near Lyman.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Rovena) Stewart of Chinquapin; two sons, Earl Hatcher of Kenansville and Edward Hatcher of Hampton, Va.; one sister, Mrs. Bessie Bradham of Chinquapin; six grandchildren, one great-grandchild and two great-great-grandchildren.
A native of Duplin County, Mrs. Hatcher was the daughter of the late Tom and Victoria Lanier and was the widow of the late Ellis Hatcher.
She was a lifelong resident of the Lyman Community and was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church.
The family received at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and will be at Mrs. Hatcher's residence Route 1, Chinquapin other times.
Casketbearers will be Anthony Hatcher, Dana Hatcher, Raymond Hatcher, Randy Smith, Mack Hunter, and Hugh Mack Hunter.

She is survived by one son, Bernard (Jack) Batts Jr. of Temple Hill, Md., two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A native of Duplin County, Mrs. Batts was the daughter of the late John Edward and Beulah Bostic Rivenbark and was the widow of Bernard (Ben) Batts.
She attended Sharon Baptist Church in Chinquapin.

Funeral for Raymond Stone, 60, of 204 Westdale Dr., will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sechrest Chapel by the Rev. William J. Campbell. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. He died Tuesday morning at his home. He had been seriously ill since Aug. 9.
He was born Jan. 4, 1923, in High Point, a son of Oscar and Maggie Southerland Stone. He lived in High Point most of his life and owned and operated Stone's Furniture Co. He was a medic with the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 619, Disabled American Veterans and past member of the Elks Lodge. He was a member of First Reformed United Church of Christ. On Nov. 20, 1948, he married the former Pauline Lloyd, who survives of the home.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Mrs. Janet Burgess of 538 Forrest St., Mrs. Cecil (Rhonda) Griffin of 1630 Bolingbroke Rd.; one son, Raymond Lloyd Stone of Kernersville; one stepsister, Mrs. Maggie Pearl Crawley of Wallace; four half-sisters, Mrs. Wendell (Annie Laura) Evans of Magnolia, Mrs. Kenneth (Virgie) Crawford of Jacksonville, Mrs. Durwood (Lucy) Parker of Rose Hill, Mrs. Frank (Faye) Wishack of Ohio; five stepbrothers, Oscar, Edwin, Cam, Allen and Mance Rivenbark, all of Wallace; three half-brothers, Ronald and Eugene Rivenbark and Pearlie Rivenbark Jr., all of Wallace; and two grandchildren.
The body is at Sechrest Funeral Home where the family will be from 7-9 tonight."

"Charles Irving Cavenaugh

Charles Irving Cavenaugh of 1709 S. Liveoak Parkway died Monday at his residence after a long illness.
He was born in Newberry, S.C., the son of Eli and Mollie Denning Cavenaugh and lived in Wilmington most of his life. He was retired from the Seaboard Coast Line after 43 years in the purchasing department.
During World War II he was commissioned in the 703rd Railway Grand Division of the U.S. Army Engineers and served in the African, Middle East and European theaters. He was separated from the Army in 1946 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Mr. Cavenaugh is survived by his wife, Omah Williams Cavenaugh of the home; one daughter, Mrs. Jane Kilpatrick of Chapel Hill, N.C.; five grandchildren; two sisters, Miss Mary Cavenaugh of Atlanta, and Mrs. Madge Childs of Midland, Texas; one brother, James D. Cavenaugh of Tampa, Fla.
Funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 11 o'clock in the Chapel of Andrews Mortuary. Interment will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.
