Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 17, from the Padgett Funeral Chapel in Wallace, conducted by Rev. Jeanne Ray. Burial will follow in the Cavenaugh Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Joan Cavenaugh; one daughter, Ms. Deborah Cavenaugh of Wilmington; two sons, Michael Leon and wife, Virginia Cavenaugh, of Harrells and Kenneth Hoover Cavenaugh, of New York City, N.Y.; two sisters, Mrs. Norman (Virginia) Hanchey and Louise Hardison, both of Wallace; two brothers, Raymond Cavenaugh of Richmond, Va. and Rifton Cavenaugh of Wallace; and three grandchildren, Joanna Layne Powers, Samuel Hunter Powers and Michael Casey Cavenaugh.
Born in Duplin County, Mr. Cavenaugh was the son of the late Gaylor A. and Cora Brown Cavenaugh. He was retired from the Federal Government as a Planner Estimator and was a member of Forestville Baptist Church in Forestville, Maryland.
Casketbearers will be: Chris Hoover, Thomas Hoover, Nicholas Gazaleh, Tony Cavenaugh, Earl Hanchey and Bobby Cavenaugh. Honorary bearers will be: Michael Lynn Cavenaugh, Emmett Hanchey, Thurmond Hardison, Dennis Carr, Zak Gazaleh, G. Michael Cavenaugh, Richard Cavenaugh and Vernon Cavenaugh Jr.

Garland T. Seymour, 74, of 115 Tarheel Pine Drive, died Friday at the V.A. Hospital in Fayetteville.
He was a retired truck driver. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II and in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the American Legion, DAV and VFW.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Garner-Stroud Funeral Home in Kinston with the Rev. Ray Brooks officiating. Burial will be in Pinelawn Memorial Park.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Flora Seymour of Darlington, S.C.; a son, Kenneth M. Seymour of Kinston; a daughter, Angie Seymour Tucker of Florence, S.C.; a brother, Carl Seymour of LaGrange; seven sisters, Hazel Poteat of Salisbury, Doris Frye of Goldsboro, Shirley Adams of St. George, Ga., Bernice Zorn of Reno, Nev., Yvonne Parnell of Goldsboro and Laverne Fields of LaGrange and Pearl Price of Seven Springs; and two grandchildren.

Burgaw -- Arthur Buren Anderson, 78, died Tuesday, May 3, 1994, at Pender Memorial Hospital, Burgaw.
Born July 18, 1915, in Watha, he was the son of the late Arthur and Mable Rivenbark Anderson.
Mr. Anderson was retired after twenty-seven years as a Civil Service auto mechanic at Camp Lejeune. He was a member of Watha United Methodist Church and American Legion Post No. 165. He served in the US Army during WWII in North Africa and Europe.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Veona Danford Anderson of the home; sons, Wright Anderson and wife, Gladys, of Wilmington and Thomas Anderson and wife, Ann, of Pilot Mountain; daughter, Mrs. Walter (Annetta) Koscher of Salem, OR; sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Roberts of Wrightsville Beach, Mrs. Harry (Esther) Webb of Watha, and Mrs. Macon (Mary) Smith of Willard; and grandchildren, Julie Anderson, Catherine Anderson, Karl Koscher, and Erica Koscher.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Watha United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bobby Smith officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Salmon Jr. and wife, Mirlyn, of Wallace; one sister, Mrs. Betty Mae Cox of Richlands; one brother, W.T. Sanders of Richlands; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Born in Onslow County, Mrs. Salmon was the daughter of the late Thomas and Charity Cavenaugh Sanders. She was the widow of Robert James Salmon Sr. and was a member of Rockfish Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Lanier was born in Wallace, N.C., on January 4, 1907, and was the son of the late John and Nannie Elizabeth Lanier. He was retired from the Babcock and Wilcox Company and was a member of the Springview Pentecostal Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, Carlton Lanier of Lakeland, Fla.; three daughters, Linda Faye Stroh of Beaufort, S.C., Marilyn Jane Mathis of Wilmigton [sic], and Margaret Elizabeth Laws of Bolivia; a brother, Albert Lanier of Detroit, Mich.; 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 16, 1995, at 1 p.m. in the Springview Pentecostal Freewill Baptist Church with the Reverned [sic] Cary Horrell officiating. Interment will follow in Prospect Cemetery.

Surviving are his son, Samuel "Sambo" Cavenaugh and his wife, Dawn of the home; his grandchildren, Samantha, Duaine and Philip Cavenaugh and five great-grandchildren.

Leon Howard Carter

Mr. L. Howard Carter Sr., age 70, of 30 Northern Blvd., Wilmington, N.C., died Sunday, June 18, 1995 in New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Carter was born March 31, 1925 in Greensboro, N.C., to the late Jasper Gaylor and Isabelle Rose Carter. He was a member of Sunset Park United Methodist Church and the owner and operator of Sunset Skating Center.
Howard Carter taught roller skating for 56 years at three skating rinks in Greensboro, North Carolina, before moving to Wilmington where he operated Sunset Roller Rink for 33 years (1961-1995).
Through the years, he coached numerous state and regional champions and the U.S. National Amateur Figure Skating champion for the years of 1989, 1990 and 1991.
He helped organize and was the first president of the North Carolina Chapter of the Roller Skating Rink Operators Association (RSROA) of America. He was also a past president of the Southeast Regional Chapter of RSROA.
Howard was cited as a VIP in the National Rink Digest (January 1993), a long standing member of the Society of Roller Skating Teachers of America and past member of the RSROA National Dance Committee.
As owners of Sunset Skating Center, Howard and his surviving spouse, Isabelle, were roller skating instructors as well as 'counselors in life and love, specializing in adolescent affairs of the heart and the amiable resolution of domestic disputes, ministers of first aid, keepers of the peace, defenders of the faith, and 'Mom and Dad' to thousands.'
Survivors include his wife, Isabelle Gillie Carter of the home; children, Leon Howard Carter Jr. of Raleigh, N.C., James Hubert Carter of Wilmington, Jack Gaylor Carter of Rolesville, N.C., Robert Charles Carter of Wilmington, and Patricia Richard of Greeley, Colorado; one brother, Jack Taylor Carter of Troutman, N.C.; one sister, Ellen Kellam of Greensboro, N.C.; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 21, 1995, at the Long Leaf Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.

He was a member of Watha PFWB Church and a retired Pender County farmer.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma Marshburn Teachey of the home; son, Dennis Carroll Teachey and wife, Dianne of Burgaw; daughter, Gloria T. Watson and husband, Willis of Watha; brother, J.Q. Teachey of Jacksonville, Fla.; sister, Catherine Padgett of Watha; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Chinquapin - Mrs. Bertha Lanier Batts, age 84, of 701 N.C. 111 South, Chinquapin, died Tuesday morning, July 11, 1995, at Duplin General Hospital in Kenansville.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 13, 1995, from the Bethel Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the Batts Family Cemetery at Chinquapin.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Letitia Batts Beacham and husband, John, of Alexandria, Va., and Mrs. Beatrice Batts Amon and husband, John, of Goldsboro; two sons, Roger Lee Batts and wife, Jacque, of Woodbridge, Va., and Reynolds Batts of Savannah, Ga.; eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
A native of Duplin County, Mrs. Batts was the daughter of the late James and Cordelia Casteen Lanier and was the widow of Willie Batts. She was an active member of Bethel Presbyterian Church and a life member of the Presbyterian Women. After farming with her husband for 41 years, at his death she began a new career. She worked as a house mother at Middlesex Freewill Baptist Church Children's Home for several years. Then she came home and worked as a companion sitter until 1988; after that she did what she enjoyed most, her church work, visiting the sick and her family.
Casketbearers will be Mrs. Batts' grandsons, David Amon, Michael Amon, Lee Batts, Jimmy Batts, Doug Beacham and Stephen Batts.
The family will receive at the Padgett Funeral Home from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and will be at Mrs. Batts' residence, 701 N.C. 111 South, Chinquapin, other times.

Annie Spencer Southerland, 93, of the Pinewood Home in Pink Hill, died Wednesday at Carteret General Hospital. A homemaker and a long-time member of the New Hope Baptist Church near Kinston, she was the mother of Louise Berg of Morehead City.
Other survivors include four sisters, Edna Kuehn of St. Louis, Mo., Nellie Jones and Helen Rouse, both of Kinston, and Dorothy Keel of Jacksonville; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Her funeral was held graveside at 3 p.m. today at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Kinston.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Juanita Rhodes Williams of the home; a son, Norwood Williams Jr. and wife, Connie; a daughter, Wanda W. Edens and husband, Charles; two granddaughters, Keri and Ashley Williams; a grandson, Brandon Edens; and a sister, Ruth W. Cavenaugh of Wallace, NC.

Mrs. Marshburn was a lifelong member of Wrightsboro Baptist Church. She was an accomplished pianist having played the piano at Wrightsboro Baptist Church for over 75 years. Mrs. Marshburn also played the piano for the Billy Graham Crusade on a Caribbean cruise.
Surviving are her son, Donald R. Marshburn and wife, Ann, of Hampstead, N.C.; a daughter, Mrs. Betty M. Maynard and husband, Alan, of Wilmington; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, William M. Horne and wife, Marian, of Pfafftown, N.C.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 4, 1996, in the Wrightsboro Cemetery by Rev. Dr. Harvey Whaley, Rev. Mike Lewis and Rev. Jeff Nichols.

Rose Hill - Mrs. Pearl Lou Cavenaugh Lanier of 120 East Center Street, Rose Hill, N.C., died on Friday, November 15th, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law.
Mrs. Lanier was born on July 22, 1912 in Wallace, N.C., and was the daughter of John Stephen and Berta Blake Cavenaugh. She was graduated from Clement High School and attended Louisburg College. In 1934 she married Erchey Leo Lanier. They made their home in Rose Hill where Mrs. Lanier remained until recently. She was a member of Rose Hill United Methodist Church.
Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband; a brother, Albert John Cavenaugh; sisters, Gertrude Sue Cavenaugh and Myra Cavenaugh Fussell. She is survived by a son, Erchey Leo Lanier Jr. and wife, Bettie Fields Lanier, of Rose Hill, N.C.; a daughter, Harriet Lanier Farrior and husband, Charles Colwell Farrior Jr., of Wallace, N.C.; two granddaughters, Susan Lanier Bowman and husband, Gary Lynn Bowman, of Oxford, N.C., and Harriet Lanier Volpe and husband, Michael David Volpe, of Fairfax, Va.; grandsons, Charles Colwell Farrior III and Nathan John Farrior of Wallace, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Anna Blake Bowman and Michael Caldwell Bowman of Oxford, N.C.
The family will receive at Padgett Funeral Home on Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times at the home of Charley and Harriet Farrior, 303 South Raleigh Street, Wallace, N.C.
A worship service celebrating the life of Mrs. Lanier will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, November 17, from the Rose Hill United Methodist Church, Rose Hill, N.C., conducted by the Rev. Paul T. Stallsworth. Interment will follow in Rockfish Memorial Cemetery, Wallace, N.C.
Casketbearers will be Albert J. Cavenaugh Jr., Clem D. Faircloth, Aaron E. Fussell, James D. Fussell Jr., Charles F. Hawes Jr., Beaufort B. Longest, Philip W. Longest and Robert E. Ward III.

Rose Hill -- Durant Williams Smith, age 74, died Tuesday, November 19, 1996, at home.
Surviving are his wife, Maxine L. Smith of the home; his mother, Earlie Mae Smith of Warsaw; three daughters, Pam Barrett of Lathrop, CA, Carla Hawkins of Tracy, CA, and Melinda Busa of San Jose, CA; two brothers, Sidney E. Smith and Stanley Smith, both of Rose Hill; one sister, Dora Ellen Strickland of Mt. Olive; seven grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Sunday, November 24, 1996, at Rose Hill Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.
Visitation will be Saturday, November 23, 1996, from 7 until 9 p.m. at the Community Funeral Home of Rose Hill.
Family and friends will be received at other times at the home of Stanley Smith, 715 Sheffield Road, Rose Hill."

"Waitus Carroll English Sr.

Hampstead - Waitus Carroll English Sr., of 394 Batson Road, Hampstead, NC, died Tuesday, December 3, 1996.
He was born April 28, 1912, in Duplin County, the son of the late Fennel Lee English and Minnie Cavenaugh English. He was preceded in death by his wife, Morie Lee Norris English and a son, Myron David English.
Mr. English is survived by his son, W.C. English Jr. and his wife, Helen, of Hampstead, NC, and a daughter-in-law, Ann B. English of Hampstead. He is also survived by one brother, Johnny Butler English of Ivanhoe; five grandchildren, Charlotte Bexley and husband, Ken, of Atlanta, Ga.; David English and wife, Tonya, of Hampstead, NC, Waitus C. English III and wife, Kathy, of Watha, NC, Sheryl Cauley and husband, Robbie, of Willard, NC, Vann English and wife, Angela, of Burgaw, NC; and eleven great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, 2 p.m., at Barlow-Vista Baptist Church, Hampstead, NC, by Rev. Tim Evans, Rev. L.G. Green and Rev. Paul Mull. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mr. English's nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of Barlow-Vista Baptist Church, David DeVane and Keith Carlton.
The family will be at their residence, 394 Batson Road, Hampstead, NC.
