First found in Angus where they were recorded as a family of great antiquity seated on the lands of Reedie near Kirriemuir in that shire.

The family of Reidy or Riedy etc.. is found early in Tipperary and subsequently into modern times in counties Clare and Kerry. Some confusion results from similar names such as Reddy etc.., and some of the name are of likely foreign introduction as well.

Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were John Reddy settled in Boston in 1823; Patrick Reddy settled in New York in 1842 with his wife and two children and others.
