Generation No. 1

(WORK IN PROGRESS)

1. ELIJAH BIRGE 6 (EZEKIEL5, JONATHAN4, DANIEL3, DANIEL2, RICHARD1) was born 01 September 1785 in Vermont, and died 1832 in Rushtown, PA.(NOW WE KNOW HE DIDN'T DIE IN RUSHTOWN, PA IN 1832, SEE LINK BELOW) Now the work starts all over.
He married (1) ELIZABETH BURHAM Abt. 1805. She was born Abt. 1795.
He married (2) PAMELIA MILLIE 'AMELIA' SOMMERS Abt. 1814. She was born in VA.

ELIJAH BIRGE DID NOT DIE IN RUSHTOWN PA., HE DIED IN MARION COUNTY ILLINOIS.

PICTURE OF HIS HEADSTONE, HE DIED OCT 1840 IN MARION COUNTY ILLINOIS

The Original work done on the Birge family years ago show that Elijah Birge died in 1832 in PA. I like Susan Evans and her mother have looked at this for years knowning that Elijah Birge lived in Marion County Illinois and yes was buried there as well. But, the key to proving this was finding the marriage records of Pamelia (Amelia) Sommers Birge to Willis Woods and I now have a picture of Elijah Birge, my 4th great grandfather, headstone.

I did email the person who had listed the cemetery and she told me I would not be able to purchase those cemetery records, as her sister had just tried to. So therefore I am going to change the death date, and place of death and list the cemetery in which he is buried in. Sharlee

Jan 17, 2012, Hi Sharlee,
A while back, I sent you some information on the family of William Birge (son of Elijah and Pamelia Sommers). Well, I have some new information that I hope you will agree is exciting.
First of all, I think Pamelia Sommers remarried in Marion Co. IL after Elijah’s death. My mother and I figured this out quite a few years ago, but it took me some time to find my notes.
If you check the 1850 Census for Marion Co., you will find a Willis Wood living 2 doors down from Emmeline and James Adams and their mixed families. Here is Willis Wood’s census listing;
Willis Wood 55 (1795) NC farmer
Amella Wood 60 (1790) CT
William Wood 21 (1829) IL
Mary Wood 13 (1837) IL
Green Wood 11 (1839) IL
Minerva Wood 20 (1830) NY

Then from an old issue of “Footprints in Marion County ” magazine:
Woods Willis d. 1859, married 1. Mary Wibourn, married 2. Amelia Burge, Buried at Deadmond?-Sandoval.

Willis Woods and Pamelia (Amelia)’s families also intermarried, as per these listing from the IL Marriage Stats:
WOODS, WILLIAM BIRGE, MINERVA 1852-06-05 B/38 MARION IL
BURGE, GEORGE W WOODS, MARY J 1854-04-08 B/49 MARION IL

In the 1860 Census of Clinton Co., IL., Green Woods (age 22) is living with John Harvey and Elizabeth Birge and their family Then a few doors down is William Wood (age 28) Il, Minerva (Birge) Wood (age 30) NY, their son Silas Wood (age 6) IL and Green Wood (age 22) IL. (Green seems to have gotten around that day!)

Yesterday on Findagrave.com I chanced on the following two graves in Andereck-McClelland Cemetery , Sandoval, Marion County, Illinois:
Mary Jane Woods Birge, Birth: 1837 Death: May 1, 1857 Marion County Illinois ,
Mary was the daughter of Willis Woods and Mary Wilbourn. She married George W. Birge on 13 Apr 1854 .
As you can see Mary died just in time for George (son of Elijah & Pamelia Birge) to marry Martha Melton on August 23, 1857 in Jefferson, Co. (from IL Marriage Stats).
Here is George’s family’s in the 1860 US Census:
Centralia , Town 1 North 1 East, Marion Co., IL Enumerated July 10, 1860 397-399 (one house down from William Birge)
Birge, George 35 1825 Carpenter PA
Birge, Martha 33 1827 IL
Birge, Robbin 5 1855 IL
Birge, James 3/12 1860 IL
Thank you Sarah Evans for finding your notes and sharing the work of your Mother and yourself. Sharlee

My Uncle Lloyd Birge of Pasco Washington has a picture on glass, tin framed manufacture, Union case. It opens like a book. This young man was dressed in a civil war uniform.
The note behind the picture said, Stillman Birge brother of C L (Charles Lankford) Birge, Uncle of W L (William Lankford) Birge. The picture was in wonderful shape, so was the in casement.
October 20, 2000 as I was searching the web for the 26th Missouri Infantry (Franklin County, MO.) I found Company I's roster.

The Rolla Herald (Rolla, Phelps Co., MO.)
5 June 1873
A young man named Charles Birge, residing on the farm of Capt. Hobert, about seven miles northeast of Rolla, died on Saturday last, after an illness of about an hour and half. It is supposed that he was poisoned by eating wild parsnips, as he and another young man named William Hocutt had eaten of the roots of that wild weed, mistaking it for sweet anise. Hocutt, who had not partaken so freely of the poisonous plant; was taken with the same symptoms and was saved by the prompt administration of melted lard and butter, recommended by Mr. S. T. Johnson, our informant. The poison had taken such effect on Birge that the remedies at hand were of no avail. The deceased was about twenty-six years old and leaves a wife and one child."

8. IDA ELIZABETH BIRGE 10(WILLIAM LANKFORD9, CHARLES LANKFORD8, LANKFORD7, ELIJAH6, EZEKIEL5, JONATHAN4, DANIEL3, DANIEL2, RICHARD1) was born 01 February 1893 in Near Spring Bluff Post Office, Franklin Co., MO, and died 03 November 1975 in Summersville, Texas Co., MO.
She married NEIL THEOPOHLUS BRAWLEY 01 July 1917 in Alley Springs, Shannon Co., MO, son of GEORGE BRAWLEY and HETTIE GARRETT. He was born 14 March 1890 in Oregon Co., MO, and died 23 February 1962 in Summersville, Texas Co., MO.

Notes for IDA ELIZABETH BIRGE:
Per the 1920 Carter Co., MO Census Family 474, their were NO children listed. Just NEAL as his name was shown and Ida.
1974 per Jesse Cooper Thomas. The children of Ida and Neil Brawley "rose up and honored their wonderful Mother." Alice and Gloster Tuttle were in the same Hospital. I lived a Niangua MO and went to visit all 3 of them. It was beautiful to see how all of their children were united home life. A stable foundation to start life on. They, in turn can pass that standard to the next generation. Of such homes are this Great Strong Nation Made and Stand.
Per my dad, Ida lived on the old Bond place North East of Summersville Missouri in the Hills.

Notes for RADO BOND:
Rado Bond and William Bill Koller was the first of the (Birge) related families to leave Missouri. This is per my Dad, Cordell (Larry) Birge. He wasn't sure when that was but, then the Birge family followed their sister Maude Birge Bond.
Rado and Maud Bond first settled in the foothills of the Blue Mountains, near Dayton Washington. I have seen these places, first near a gulch then to the farm land I remember seeing this two story old house and I believe there was still a barn. This was when I was a very young girl. I remember visiting Aunt Maudie as we called her in her home in Dayton Washington. She loved cats, and always had lots of them in her house. Of course, by this time I believe all of her children were all grown. Their children sold that beautiful land, just a year or so ago. May 10 1999. Sharlee

Notes for VADA PAULINE MCALLISTER:
This lady, my grandmother, was known to my sister Jackie and I (Sharlee) as Granniemom. She spoiled us very greatly after all this was done out of love for us girls. She is my hero in life. She gave me my drive, she taught me so much. Mother said when we would come home from Granniemom's we were so spoiled, we were really little terrors.
Granniemom had a very hard life. She is the oldest of 12 children. As she grew older, she helped with her own mother giving birth. Her family left Missouri and I believe first went to southern Oregon. There she along with her brothers and sisters lived in a lumber camp, clear out in the sticks. They cut railroad ties with an ax. This is how I believe she got the scare on her knee. Then the family I believe went back to Missouri. Then I was told the story by her sister, my Aunt Mary Hope, the time a twister hit where they lived in Missouri. Pauline, her sister, was running to the root cellar and was rolled up in a barbed wire fence.
Granniemom and Grandpa General went to Newkirk Oklahoma, to be married. They moved to Pataha, Garfield Co., Washington, near Pomeroy following his sister Maud Birge Bond and her husband Rado Bond from Missouri. Her mother, father, brothers and sisters moved to Idaho near Juliaetta from Missouri. I remember as a very young girl, being driven down the road, on the right was the Potlatch River, and the smell of wild celery, which grew down by the water, then the car would stop and dad would point out a little tiny old broken down house on a hill across the river, where Grandma Mac and family lived. I believe it is gone now.
Granniemom told my sister Jackie the story of the two sandy haired little boys, who were obviously the light of her life. The things that they would do, they were devoted to each other and did everything together. Her world shattered the day of the accident, and when she came to that part of the story, there came a keening cry from deep within her very soul, that can only be described as eery. So deep was her grief for both her "darlings" (for that is what she called them). The love, the devotion, the loss, not for just one death, but to the maiming of the other as well. She also devoted hard work so that our dad would have the medical attention he needed every year after that, (the money to buy a new eye every year because of his growing). I tremble as I type, said my sister Jackie, in the memory of her passion for these small boys. She said; "Jackie, I hope you girls never know what it is like to loose a child, because it something that you never get over." Girls, of course refers to Sharlee and Jackie. The little sandy haired darling little boys were General Lester Birge and Cordell (Larry) Birge our father. With the horrible death of her son General Lester Birge little over six years old, with the injury our father sustained she went on. She was a very hard worker. Would do anything for us girls. Tell some really big stories about people, just to get grown up people in trouble. She had a laugh that I called in later life, the McAllister girls laugh. As she and her sister Mary McAllister Hope have the same laugh.
In June of 1944, our grandfather, Granniemom's husband died suddenly of spinal meningitis. He was 44 years old. Granniemom was only 41. She never re-married. She wanted to a couple of times as my Aunt Mary Hope has told me just recently. But, she never did, why per Aunt Mary, Cordell and Wesley wouldn't let her.
She taught me how to cut up a whole chicken when I was six years old. She taught me how to cook, and could she cook. After the death of General, I don't know how many years went by but, she was the head cook at Washington State University in Pullman. I remember when I was a young girl, she owned this home in Cottage place, near Walla Walla, WA., she rented out her home to college professors while she worked in Pullman. Then came the day she moved back home for good. She had this huge trunk, in it was receipts for 10,000 people. These were her recipes from Pullman. She worked hard to help put her youngest son Wesley thru college. Jackie said that another time our Uncle Wesley, her son asked her once if he would have even been born if Lester had not died. She confided to Jackie that most likely not, as her world was complete with her darlings, however, she didn't tell him that. Instead she told him "of course he would have been born anyway". I worked with her in wheat harvest, and my sister Jackie worked with her in pea harvest and wheat harvest. The funny thing, she didn't want Mr. Kent to know how old she was, so I couldn't where any make up and she helped me bind my chest every morning, so there wouldn't be any possibility of a couple of bumps showing. She would let me drive Cindy. That was her car. But not until we were out of site. She made me horrified of the dark. The boggy man!!! Remember when Elvis first showed up on the Ed Sullivan Show on Television. Well, our mother and dad thought he was a very vulgar man wouldn't let us watch him or even buy his music. Guess, what, when we went to Granniemoms we got to hear Elvis. When I was a young mother, she would come to Vancouver and stay with us, always when Don and I were on diets. The food she cooked up, we never stayed on our diets. I never thought she would die, I always knew, that when the time came, she would come and live with us. There was no question in my mind. But, instead she went to live with her son Wesley in Kentucky. She made one long trip back to Pomeroy Washington, to be laid to rest by her husband and son.
This is from my sister Jackie, "Granniemom is my mentor. She stood by me at times when the world seemed very bleak, and when others did not." Meaning our own parents. "She taught me self-confidence, besides the basic idea of good cooking, (for although I am a very good cook, I do not share the love of it with her and Sharlee, although I do share the treasured memories of the learning, just like Sharlee). She taught me to trust my inner instincts, she taught me to sew, budget on a nothing income and to allow my artistic creativity to blossom. She taught me so very much. Unlike Sharlee, I knew that she would never live with either of us, she told me so. Sharlee and I had it planned out for her that she would spend time with both of us. How we love her ......still...that is a testament to the goodness and beauty of this woman who was the world to us. What a blessing she has been in our lives". Jackie goes on to say, "My son Robert, could tell you some stories. For Robert, Jennifer and I were blessed to live in the same area she did, only five miles from her, and we spent time there so very much. We had a day, each week, that was Granniemoms day. It was devoted only to what she wanted to do that whole day, for over 2 years". Sometimes she wanted to go for a drive in the mountains, and I (Jackie) always drove, for what Granniemom wasn't a good driver. I remember one time she came to pick up Robbie, infant Jennifer and I (Jackie) for a root beer, I had just received a letter from my husband, who was TDY and wanted to read it, so I told her to drive. I always wondered why dad said not to ride with her, I found out that day. Funny though, even in wheat and pea harvest I never rode with her, I always talked her into letting me drive into town, and I was only 15 & 16 guess you could say she taught me to drive too. Mr. Kent saw us drive off one day from the ranch and told her she had better be careful because that would be a hefty fine if we got caught. She just laughed and said that I was a good driver.
Anyway sometime a drive into the mountains, sometimes to the park to feed the ducks, sometimes the farmers market in Milton-Freewater, Oregon, other times to work in the roses, where of course my love and passion for roses comes from, there were other things that we would do on those days. Roberts favorite was to feed the ducks in Pioneer Park. To this day he seeks out a park with ducks where ever he is living and now he takes his girls to feed the ducks and tells them of Granniemom. After adding Jackie's information into this. I was crying, tears rolled down my cheeks remembering that she loved us so very much. And yes, her love for her Roses, up until just a few years ago, my rose garden, the beauty of it, it didn't make any difference how much time it took to care for the roses, it was because of her. And my gardens, she always had the best looking and tasting garden, which I have passed on to my children. Peggy loves her roses, flowers and her garden. Donny is the same way. Chuck he could care less, he is a Marine, getting ready to re up for the 3rd time. 4-24-99
Jackie and I (Sharlee) as she put it to me, want the whole world to see her through our eyes. We love you Granniemon.

ii. GENERAL LESTER BIRGE, b. 15 September 1922, Pomeroy, Garfield Co., WA; d. 17 March 1928, Pomeroy, Garfield Co., WA.
Notes for GENERAL LESTER BIRGE:
Lester was killed instantly, as I remember being told. Pauline was driving a model A or T and a drunk man driving a horse drawn wagon crashed with the vehicle. The leg of the horse went through the little windshield, the glass severed Lester's neck and my father Cordell was injured. Sharlee, June 8, 1996.
It wasn't until the Bond Birthday reunion June 2001, that I found out my child hood story wasn't correct.
General was driving the car, Granniemom was home. General, his sister Nancy Pearl her son Ralph, my Dad and Lester were all in the car. The rest of the story is correct… My dad didn’t remember and doesn’t to this day.
