(written to his sons Pheneas and Samuel in Brownsville, Jackson County, IL 1841.
Postmarked: New Orleans, Louisisana 18 Nov 1841 Addresses to: Pheneas C. Hall and Samuel B. Hall State Illinois, Jackson County, Brownsville
Heading: Texas, Washington Coun;ty, Cedar Creek, 5 Nov 1841

Dear Sons, I now embrace the opportunity to drop you a few line informing you that through the mercies of the Great Giver of All Blessings we are all enjoying good health say all our friends-your Mother excepted and her health is much the same as it was shen you were here. I sincerely hope that these lines may find you and all the Connections in a state of perfect good health. I have but little of importance to communicate to you- we have good crops of corne (corne is selling at $.50 per bushel). Cotton crops are tolerable good. There is a great quantity raised in the County. This season cotton is from $9.50 to $10.00 per hun. I can inform you that midst plenty we have indirectly Peace. The Mexicans scarcely threaten us as they are so engaged in perpetual war at home they have not time t think of war abroad. It is a short time since Santa Anna defeated Bustementa (the President and Cheiftain of Mexico) and got possession of the City of Mexico and is counquering all the Centerlists before him. This has been the misfortune of those rebeled criters for the last eleven year and God only knows when such a civil war will be at an end. I wrote you a letter about the last of August informing you that if you could encourage me to come I intend to pay you a visit though I have not received any answer yet though I am still expecting one. In some short time if I receive a letter shortly informing me to come I shall start in three days after I receive it, but if the time is delayed I cannot come lest the River might freeze up and I be detained until Springs. Which would be very much against my wishes. If you are not prepared to pay the little money that is coming to William and Jackson at this time perhaps you an discharge it in flower next spring. If you can write to me immediately and I will come on or about the first of March next. Since James speaks of authenticizing me to dispose of the eight acres of land joining you as he has declined the intention of ever going back to live there. He is such a fair way of making a good living but William is a little embarrased at this time. They have lands in abundance but it will not sell for money. They are anxious to get out of debt before the law is repealed making property bring two-thirds of its value as property cannot be sold under any pretnece whatever for less tha two-thirds of its value . Congress is now in session and it's expected the above law will be repealed and a new law be passed making property sell for what it will bring. If so it will place the citizens of this County in a very awkward situation and some of ourselves among the rest unless you can do something for them. If you cannot riase money, flower can be used. Have very soon and I will come and receive it first next March but if I receive a letter from you to come this fall I will start in two or three days after receiving it. William and Jackson both have helpless family and not situated to leave them and the way I am situated to assist them is to attend to their concerns in that Conty. I assure you it would be a great accomodation to them if you can help them and it would be remembered by them as a great favor. As it is not in my power to assist them at this time, please to write me every month for two or three months. Perhaps I may get some of your letters. Before I close I inform you that your Mother sends her love to you both and all her grandchildren. Also my adopted daughter, Sarah A. Hall send her best respects to all her uncles and aunts and she says she wishes to see them all but her lot is ast-always therefore she has to be content with her situation. I now close my letter by offering to you my best love and affections.
Your Affectionate Father until Death,
James Hall, Sr.
(signature mark)

Before I close I inform you that religion is flourishing very much in the County-eighteen months back there was not a Baptist church west of the Brazos River-now there are seven or eight containing a great many members. James Hall, Sr.

He was a farmer in 1813 in Somerset Twp., Jackson IL. His farm is said to have been the first on which cotton was raised and he installed a cotton gin to process it. He was a Grist Mill owner/operator between 1813/1820 in Hall Run, Somerset Twp., Jackson IL. The location of the grist mill was not far from the place where Willaim Gill was operating a ferry across Beaucoup Creek after 1813. A small stream emptying into Beaucoup provided water for the mill. This came to be known as Hall's Run and the name was applied to the area which became a sort of industrial complex. It was an important enterprise for the time, comprising also a cooperage shop and a distillery.
He was Justice of the Peace in 1814 in Jackson Co IL. He was appointed County Commissioner in 1816 in Jackson Co IL. He was on of the first three County Commissioners, the other two being Jesse Griggs and Nathan Davis. They served until 1818 when Illinois became a state. He wad Delegate to Constitutional convention about 1818 in Jackson Co IL. Dr. Conrad Will was the other delegate from Jackson Co IL. He was a distiller before 1820 in Hudson's Cove, Jackson Co IL. He set up a distillery on the East side of Fountain Bluff at a place called Hudson's Cove and the water used by it came from Hudson's Spring. He conveyed Warranty Deed Aug 10 1823 in Jackson Co IL to Phineas C. Hall. He was County Juror, Jackson Co IL in 1824 and 1827.
He emigrated on 3 Jun 1830 to Washington Co., Texas. Was not on 1830 Jackson Co IL Census.

Land records in Texas show that he arrived in 1830. He was Judge in 1835 in Washington Co TX. He was witness Assessment on 10 Oct 1836 in Washington Co TX page 133 Asst by heirs of Simon Miller Sr., Deed. He was listed on the Jan 16 1840 Washington Co TX. He was taxed on 230 acres of land, 3 slaves, 3 horses and 50 cows.

According to the probate records he died on his way back to the United States. Some say he is buried in Austin Co. However in the fall after his death his son, Jackson deeded land to the Methodist Church for a cemetery. It would seem that he is buried there.

___, 1882 Barton's Free Press Carbondale, Jackson Co IL.
Printed Sept 2 1882, "Early in the month of May, last, Fred Selgar killed John Erhart. They were neighbors living in the north part of the county. Horses belonging to Erhart got in Selgar's enclosure, the latter had driven them out and across Little Muddy Creek. Erhart came to Selgar's place to see about it and Selgar struck him over the head with a heavy club. Selgar was sentenced on Wednesday to hang.....
Then with a couple of days Thomas Shaw answered e-mail I had sent and he sent this back to me. November 24, 1883 Barton's Free Press "Silgar is not to hang, at least not yet. The Supreme Court granted him a new Trial." August 24, 2004, Thomas sent me another e-mail, "It appears that Fred Zelgar was not executed by the State of Illinois. His name is not in their list of executed prisoners." It was because of Thomas Shaw, the information started flowing in about Elvira B. Hall married Frederick Zelgar. Thomas's knowledge of the Hall families is very remarkable. So then he started helping put the Hall family together. Source: John Farrell and Thomas Shaw

***********

John Wendell Farrell age 66, resident of Noble Ok., for the past 21 years, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006 at the Norman Hospital.

John was born July 20, 1940 at Dewey Oklahoma; son of Oad and Esther “Ma” (Webb) Farrell. John grew up in Nowata and attended school there until he and his mother left for Iowa then California. In March 1958 John enlisted in the United States Air Force in Los Angeles Ca. He retired from the Air force May 31, 1981.

He is survived by his wife Sharlee of the home, one brother Wayne M. (Sleepy) Farrell of Nowata, one sister, Mary L. Branstetter and step children, Carolyn Branaman of San Angelo, TX; Bobby & Sherry Haggerton; Billy Haggerton; Peggy MacNeil; Gunnery Sgt; Charles MacNeil; Donald MacNeil, and nieces and nephews and step-grandchildren and lots of friends. John married Sharlee (Birge) MacNeil in Cleveland Co OK.

John was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Robert V., Ralph D., and Leonard E. and one sister Shirley Farrell. John was also preceded in death by his first wife Janice (Sherrod) Farrell, March 1973 and by his second wife Mary Jean (Anderson) Haggerton Farrell.

John loved his family and music and loved life. He taught himself to play the guitar while in his early years while in the Air force and even had his own bands. While in the Air force he had the good fortune to really travel the world. With the knowledge he gained while in the Air force, after retirement, he went to work for Oklahoma University and built their first laser. Then he went back to school and learned to become a printer and worked for the Print Shop in Oklahoma City until he retired. Then the computer age started, and his genealogy work started and his web sites. He has at least 19 websites on the internet. Most recently, he and his wife Sharlee work hours and hours on genealogy, not just for their family, but for people who just asked for help. It was very important to him that he and Sharlee help families find their family.

Loving husband, father and friend. “A Friend to everyone” My John

Services well be held at Benjamin Funeral Home, 114 West Cherokee, Nowata OK. 74048 Wednesday October 18th at 1:00 P.M. Interment will be at the Nowata Memorial Cemetery, Nowata.
