Dorothy MacNeil Feider daughter of Finlay Ernest MacNeil and Edith McPherson told me the following information about our MacNeil family many years ago. "Finlay MacNeil was born Nov 1853 in Scotland and he was the son of John MacNeil and Annie Morrison. It was because of a potato famine in Scotland that Finlay MacNeil, the Ham family and others went to Quebec Canada. When he arrived Finlay MacNeil was bare foot. Finlay and Anne Marie Ham were married Aug 24 1880 in Canada by John MacDonald."
That Dorothy and her husband Ed Feider went to Scotland many years ago now to visit relative. Ollie MacNeil died January 2002 in Scotland and another cousin Peggy MacNeil had married Donald Campbell they also live in Scotland.
Dorothy would talk about how young she and her sibling were when their Dad died, that they didn't get a chance to know the MacNeil family.

Malcolm and Annie Morrison, Crystal Pioneers
Malcolm Morrison was born Dec 15 1848 in Milan, Quebec, Canada. Annie Morrison was born February 27, 1855 in Stornaway, Winslow, Quebec, Canada. They were married October 17, 1879. Mr. Morrison came to the United States with FINLEY MACNEIL and several other men hoping to find land in North Dakota to file on.
They arrived in Grand Forks, North Dakota and with no transportation they had to walk the rest of the way. It was very hard going and they had to use hip boots as the land was very muddy and lots of water. Mr. Morrison and one other man made it that day to the home of friends, Murdo Macivers, an area called Mount View near Hoople, North Dakota. The next day Mr. MACNEIL and the rest came. Mr. Morrison and Mr. MACNEIL filed on land 2 miles south of Crystal North Dakota. They built shacks for shelter while building their small houses and clearing the land. The mail as far as the Murdo Macivers. The wives and children came later. The settlers had walking plows, oxen or horses and turned one furrow at a time. They planted grain and with the first straw, Mrs. Morrison braided hats for the men as shade from the sun. There were many Indians around and the women were frightened when they heard drums but the Indians never bothered anyone. There were many Scotch settlers around the area so they were able to keep up with their Gaelic. (The article goes on only about The Morrison family, Finley MacNEIL is not mentioned any more)

Hi Sharlee and others: (Trying to find where Finlay and Annie were married)
What used to be Whitton in Compton County, Québec is now known as Ste-Cécile-de-Whitton in Le Granit County (Compté), right on the Maine-Québec border just east of where the New Hampshire state line meets them both. Just north of the Maine border is Lac (Lake) Mégantic, almost surely one of the 'finger' lakes carved out of the Canadian granite by the glaciers of long ago.
Just a few miles from the town of Lac-Mégantic, going north and east, you turn off the road and head toward Lac-Drolet or St Samuel Station, and - le violà !!
Yes, this is the area known in English as the Eastern Townships (French = Les Cantons de l'Est) which was almost uninhabited by anyone until the end of the Rev War, when Loyalists (Americans call them 'Tories') relocated in large numbers to take up residence in Canada which was of course still under English rule.
About 50 miles (80 km) south of Whitton is the well-known Sugarloaf Ski area in Franklin County, Maine.

OBITUARY FOR FINLEY MCNEIL/MACNEIL
NEW NEW NEW JANUARY 24, 2015
FROM: Harold Johnston
TO: Sharlee
Jan 24, 2015
Hi
I came across Finleys' obituary in the 9/24/1909 "Crystal Call". It is titled" Finley McNeal Dead".
The death of Finley Mc Neil occurred at his home, 2 miles south of Crystal Friday, Sept. 17th.
He suffered much during the past five months.
Mr. McNeil was well and favorably known in this end of the county, as is evident by the responsibilities placed upon him by his fellow citizens. He was clerk of School District No. 11 for twenty one years and township assessor for fifteen. He was a member of the Crystal Presbyterian church for eighteen years and also an active elder for fifteen.
The funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church Sunday, at 11 A.M., in the preseece of a large concourse of people, some from St. Thomas, Cavalier, Edmore, Hoople, and Milton.
Mr. Mc Neil was born near Stornway, Scotland, October 6th 1854. He came down to America in 1871, settling down in the Scottish Community at Lake Megantic, Canada.
In 1881 he came with other settlers to North Dakota and made his home here until he died. He married Annie Ham of Megantic, Canada in 1880 To this union were born nine children eight of whom are living to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent father He was left a widower in 1900. In 1903 he married Mis. Christina Finlayson of Boston Mass., who survives him.
Mr. Mc Niel died of cancer of the stomach. An operation was performed last March but without much relief.
He was a man of quiet in dispoition and unassuming in manner and of a stalwart christian character who will be greatly missed in the community but especially in the church to which he gave much of his time and energy.
I copied the obituary as it was printed--notice some misspelled words. The margins represent paragraphs. I have read some other articles in the CALL which mentioned Finley-- and his second wife, if I'm correct, was a sister to the Presbyterian minister Rev. Finlayson. The operation mentioned in the article was probably performed in Rochester, Minnesota because he had been there for medical attention. Notice the McNeal spelling in the title and then in the obituary Mc Neil--goes to show its hard to keep things straight, but it is still very informative. Harold

Helen McNeil Henry
Birth: Aug. 21, 1891, North Dakota, USA
Death: May 16, 1918, Janesville, Waseca County, Minnesota, USA
HELEN MCNEIL HENRY
Helen McNeil Henry passed away at about eleven-thirty o'clock on Thursday in the forenoon. Death was due to the effects of drinking a quantity of Lysol taken without doubt in a moment of spasmodic mental aberration. Despite the efforts of two skilled physicians, Drs. Joyce and O'Hara, she survived only about three quarters of an hour after taking the poison. Immediately after her death Coroner Blanchard was called and viewing the remains he decided no inquest necessary as the cause of death was apparent. The deceased was born at Crystal Lake, North Dakota, August 21st, 1891. She was 26 years, 8 months and 15 days old. Early in life she went to Regina, in the Province of Saskatchewan, Canada, where she became a professional nurse, graduating at one of the leading Canadian hospitals. She came to Rochester in this state several years ago where she met and married Mr. Henry, son of the writer. After marriage she resided with her husband in Omaha about a year and a half when they came to Janesville which place has since been their home. The deceased was a lady of many estimable qualities, refined, cultured, loveable. She was devoted to what she considered her life work and in her chosen calling she displayed tireless energy, indomitable application, courage and fortitude. She was attractive and winsome in her manners, possessing an intuitive and indefinable element that always appealed favorably to the sick and afflicted in her charge and under her care. She was fond of children and always took great delight in making them happy. She loved the beautiful, in all its gorgeous attractiveness, flowers, birds, the dainty refined things of life with which her disposition and nature harmonized. Early in life she became a Christian and a member of the Presbyterian Church. Friends of her youth and those who knew her in later years pay her the tribute of worthily exemplifying the victim of a passing hallucination and laid her tired body down to rest. It brought a great sorrow whose night of vigil was softened by the tender sympathy of many friends. Funeral services were conducted at the home of the writer at two o'clock Saturday afternoon. The casket was bedecked with flowers sent by loving friends. Miss Mabel Nyquist sang very sweetly and beautifully two solos, "In Heavenly Love Abiding: and "Still, Sill, With Thee," Mrs. A. R. Miner, of Rochester, sister-in-law of the deceased paying the piano accompaniment. Rev. W. J. Robinson, pastor of the Methodist church, spoke of her life and character and supplemented it with a brief but affectionate and appropriate address. The remains were laid to rest in the Janesville cemetery. She is survived by her husband, a step-mother, Mrs. D. J. McLean, of Bath gate, N. D., four brothers, one of whom resides in Bath gate and three in the far west, two sisters who reside in Beloit, Wis., and one sisters who is a resident in Delaware. Janesville Argus5-22-1918
