Notes on Gallant Estes Submitted by: David Thomas
Gallant was with his son Edward by his first wife at the Battle of Emucfau in Alabama as a private in the Company of Tennessee Volunteers Mounted Gunmen commanded by Capt. Adam Dale, Second Regiment commanded by Col. William Y Higgins & under the command of Maj. Gen. Andrew Jackson fighting the Creek Indians. He was shot through the head on the morning of the 22nd January 1814 and died on the fourth day after on 26 January 1814.
The following is taken from the Book Pictorial Field-Book, Jackson on the war-path again. Pages 774 & 775, Battle of Emucfau, Bravery of the Force.
January 21, 1814.
On the following morning he pushed forward toward Emucfau, twelve miles distant on the bend of the Tallapoosa, and toward the evening, when near Emuqeth Creek, fell upon a much beaten trail, which indicated the proximity of a large force of Indians. Jackson though it prudent to halt and reconnoiter. He disposed his troops in a hollow square, doubled the sentinels, sent out spies, and in every way had measures to meet an attack during the night. Toward midnight the savages were observed prowling about, and at the same time the general was informed that a large body of Indians were encamped within three miles of him, some engaged in a war dance, and others removing the women and children. An immediate attack seemed impending, and Jackson, fully prepared, calmly awaited it.
January 22, 1814.
The night wore away, and the dawn approached, when, at six o'clock, the Indians fell suddenly and with great fury upon the left flank of Jackson's camp, occupied by troops under Colonel Higgins. General Coffee was with them, and, under his direction, assisted by Colonel Sitler, the Adjutant General, and Colonel Carroll, the Inspector General, these new recruits fought gallantly, and kept the assailants in check. At dawn, when the whole field might be seen, they were re-enforced by Captain Ferrill's company of infantry, and the whole body were led to vigorous charge upon the savages by General Coffee, Supported by Colonels Higgins and Carroll, and the friendly Indians. The savages were discomfited and dispersed and fled, hotly pursued by the Tennesseans, with much slaughter, for full two miles. Inspired by this success, Jackson immediately detached General Coffee, with four hundred men and the whole body of Indians, to destroy the encampment of the for at Emucfau. It was found to be too strongly fortified to be taken without artillery, so Coffee march back for the purpose of guarding the cannon on its way to a position to bear upon the town. This retrograde movement encouraged the Indians, and a strong party of them fell upon the right of Jackson's encampment. Coffee at once asked and obtained leave to lead two hundred men to the support of that wing, and to fall upon the left of the foe, while the friendly Indians should fall upon their right flank at the same moment. By some mistake only fifty-four men followed Coffee. The gallent General fell upon the Indians with these, and Jackson ordered two hundred of the friendly Indians to co-operate with him by attacking the right flank of the savages. "This order was promptly obeyed," said Jackson in his report, "and on the moment of its execution what I expected was realized. The enemy had intended the attack on the right as a feint, and , expecting to direct my attention thither, meant to attack me again with their main force, on the left flank, which they had hoped to find weakened and in disorder. They were disappointed." The General, with wise discretion, had only ordered his left to remain firm, but had repaired thither himself, and directed a part of the reserves, under Captain Ferrill, to hasten to its support. In this way the main body met the advancing enemy. They gave the foe two or three volleys, and then charged them vigorously with the bayonet. The Indians broke, and fled in confusion, hotly pursued some distance and the friendly Indians, unable to withstand the temptation, left their post on the right flank and joined in the chase, all the while pouring a harassing fire upon the fugitives.
General Coffee in the mean time was struggling manfully against the assailants on the right of the encampment. The desertion of the Indians supporters placed him in a critical situation, for the odds were greatly against him. he was soon relieved by the return from the chase of Jim Fife and a hundred if his warriors, who were immediately summoned to his support. The aid was timely. Coffee and his little party charged the savages vigorously, who, dispirited by the flight of their main body, gave way and ran for their lives in every direction, many of them falling before the destructive weapons of the pursuers. The victory, in the form of a repulse, was complete, but it had been won at the cost of a severe wound in his Body by General Coffee, and the loss of his Aid-De-Camp, Colonel A. Donelson, and two of three others. Several of the Privates were also wounded.

REBEL SOLDIERS LIVED AND DIED IN JOHNSON'S ISLAND PRISON ON LAKE ERIE
Did you know there was a Union prison camp on Lake Erie for Confederate prisoners of war? Doc's News is proud to bring you this little-known story, by kind permission of its author and photographer, Roy S. Swartz. Additional photos by Carl Mashek. Johnson's Island prison site:
By Roy S. Swartz
During the Civil War, Johnson's Island, a small island in the Sandusky Bay served as a military prison for Confederate officers, enlisted men and civilians who were deemed disloyal to the union. 9000 men passed through the prison gates. There were 25 rebel generals and men who would become congressman. governors, ambassadors, authors, and physicians. Yes, even a private would one day sit on the Supreme Court.
Johnson's Island was a pleasant site, as prisons go, except in winter when the winds off Lake Erie howled through the camp. Life was hard, but the death rate was low compared to other Civil War prisons and encampments.
Despite a 12-foot plank fence, armed guards, and the fact the prison was on an island. several prisoners did escape. Some fled across the ice, one made it by rowboat, others boarded the daily steamboat for Sandusky posing as workmen. As many as 12 succeeded in getting off the island and getting to the safe haven of Canada or the south. Many more tried but were re-captured and returned to the island.
Most of the small island was used for the prison. No buildings remain, though a few features do tell a story of their existence. One earthen fort remains intact. The cemetery has 206 graves marked with white Georgia marble headstones. They were placed there in 1890. Prisoners themselves carved the original markers from bunk boards. (A cemetery plat is listed in "Rebels on Lake Erie " by Charles E. Frohman - 1965) Each Year a Memorial Day Service is held to honor and pay respect not only to the 206 buried in this cemetery, but to all others who had given their lives for their country. It is well attended from many states, both North and South.
Memorial Day originated during the Civil War, when some southern women chose May 30th to decorate soldiers' graves. The honor was for the dead of both the Union and Confederate armies. It is believed that Cassanda Oliver Moncure of Virginia was the one responsible for this event.
The cemetery today is a quiet, well-tended plot, surrounded by a black iron fence and guarded by a huge bronze statue of a Confederate soldier. He does not look to the south, since this position would be considered retreat. He faces north with a ceaseless vigil. The Confederate Monument, shown above, was sculptured by Sir Moses Ezekiel and dedicated in 1910. He also sculptured the Confederate monument at Arlington National Cemetery where he is buried. http://johnsonsisland.com

I can help with some information about Kenneth Estes. His parents are Ephraim Estes and Luvina Marinda Risley. We have some fairly extensive information on the Estes side of the family but have virtually no information ont he Risley side. Kenneth had a sister Sarah (my husbands Great Grandmother) and it is said that there was one other brother, Todd, and another sister, Lavinia but we have yet to prove the last two. If you are interested I can send you our Estes information. Thanks - pam

We are searching for a Luvina Marinda Risley. born aorund 1850? We know she married Ephraim Estes sometime around or before 1880 in Marion Arkansas. We have been unable to find where she came from or where she went after 1890. We know they had at least one daughter Sarah Elizabeth Estes Tate and at least one son, Kenneth Estes, but are told of two others, Luvinia and Todd.
She is listed with Ephraim as owning land and on census as Marindy. She is listed on death records for Sarah and Kenneth as Luvina. we assume she was at some time here in Oklahoma. Any information you might have about who her family might be would be appreciated. Thanks for your time - Pam

Hello, I have trying to find out information on Benjamin Risley and his family. All that I have to go by is the 1850 Ozark Co MO census. I believe Ben and family members might be buried in the Lize Friend Grave Yard on Little North Fork, as told IN Turnbo's.
The 1850 census shows that Ben & Sarah Miller Brown Risley had a daughter named Marinda that was 9/12 old. I have a Marindy Risley marrying Ephraim Estes. Hope some one can help.

Notes for THOMAS CLYDE BRANNAN:
Nov 11, 2010
Hi,
I just found your website. My father and his family are from Oklahoma and Arkansas. His mother was a Brannan. Her father was Clyde Brannan and his father was David. They had a farm on the Verdigris river Northwest of Chelsea on the west side of the river. My grandma grew up on that farm at Watova. Her mother was Luvenia Estes Brannan and I knew her well. After Clyde left her, she married Jim Tanner there in the area. When my grandma married my grandfather in 1920 (Otha Abraham Creason), my great grandmother's last name was now Tanner. My grandfather, Otha, was first married to a Cherokee girl named Susie Beck of the Beck's in Chelsea. They had a son together but he died at one or two years old. Susie's older sister, Lucy was married to my grandpa cousin, Paul Creason and they had a daughter names Louise. Paul's parents raised Louise as one of their own. I knew Paul's younger brother, Clarence, very well (Riverside California). Jim Tanner has a sister and she was married to my grandpa's dad after his mom died, grandpa's mother was Stella Mohney Creason and she is buried in Chelsea Oklahoma, in the Dawes cemetery (died 1916). My grandpa said she had a lot of Indian in her but we've not been able to verify that. We are wondering if you have more information on the Brannan's in the Nowata area. Clyde had two families, the first one with my Gram and then a second one with the younger wife. There were several boys. My grandmother, Mary Alice Brannan Creason was his firstborn. My father was born in Jennings Oklahoma in 1921 when Grandma was 16 years old.

Bleva Ora [ESTES] Cowdrey d. May 26, 1933, Yellville, AR Mrs. Ora COWDREY, widow of the late J.A. (John Allen) COWDREY, passed away at the home of her son, Troy, on North Broadway in this town about six o'clock Saturday morning. For a number of years, Mrs. COWDREY had been bothered with heart trouble, but, for some time, seemingly, she had been in good health. Friday night, when she retired, she was apparently feeling as well as usual and rested well during the night. Saturday morning Mr. and Mrs. COWDREY arose at the usual hour and Troy's mother also arose and dressed, but in a few minutes she remarked that she was not feeling well and believed she would lie down, and told her daughter-in-law that she need not prepare breakfast for her, and she went into her room and laid down. Troy went out to look about the chores around the place, and when he re-entered the house ten or fifteen minutes later, his wife asked him to step into the room and see about his mother, remarking that she had not heard her move since she (l)aid down. When Troy entered the room he found that she had passed away, seemingly without a struggle. To the immediate family who knew her condition, her sudden going away was not a surprise, but to them, as to her many friends, it was a great shock. Her sons, Cam and Allen, and other relatives in the town were immediately notified as were her two daughters Mrs. John JEFFERSON, who lives in Springfield, Mo., and Mrs. Ed KIRBY, who lived in Decatur, Illinois. An undertaker was called and the body was prepared for burial. Mrs. JEFFERSON and her daughter, Miss Mabel, arrived at the home Saturday night, and Mrs. KIRBY, accompanied by her husband, arrived about five o'clock Sunday morning, having driven all night. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. CHASE, assisted by Rev. H. W. JETT and Rev. T. L. WILSON, were held at the Baptist Church at four o'clock Sunday evening, and interment was in the Layton Cemetery in the presence of a host of sorrowing relatives and friends. Mrs. Ora COWDREY, nee: ESTES, was born near Harrison, Ark., *Oct. 4, 1868. She was married at Harrison on May 4 1887, to John Allen COWDREY, who passed away in this town June 1, 1927. To this union six children were born; Thurman, who died in October, 1925; Troy, Cam and Allen, all of Yellville; and Mrs. Myrtle JEFFERSON, of Springfield, Mo., and Mrs. Eva KIRBY of Decatur, Ill. In early life Mrs. COWDREY professed faith in Christ and united with the Christian Church, in which she maintained her membership until death. Mrs. COWDREY was a devoted Christian woman, a loving and affectionate mother. The beautiful floral offering was mute evidence of the high esteem in which she was held. I addition to her children Mrs. COWDREY is survived by several grandchildren, her aged father, "Uncle" Ben ESTES. of Harrison and several brothers and sisters. The Echo joins the many friends of the family in extending to them heartfelt sympathies in their sorrow. *Correction: Date of birth is incorrect as printed in "The Mountain Echo" Correct date is: Oct. 12, 1868

Thurman COWDREY fell from the scaffolding to the concrete floor, a distance of about seven feet and sustained injuries from which he died about one o'clock that afternoon. He was conscious for a few minutes after he was picked up, but soon sank into unconscioussness, and was rushed to the hospital at Fairfax, a few miles away where everything that human skill could do, was done, to stay the hand of death, but to no avail - death relieved him of his suffering about the hour named above. We understand that he had been suffering, at intervals, for a few days with indigestion pains under the heart, and it is thought he might have suffered an attack of those pains which stunned him for a minute, and he lost his balance and fell to the floor. His parents, Mr. And Mrs. J. A. COWDREY, and his brothers, Cam and Allen, and his sister, Miss Eva, of this place were notified at once of the tragedy, and only those who have received such notices can realize the heartache it caused - for a time, life to them was as dark as midnight - there was no ray of light or hope. In an instant death had entered two homes. In the far away town in Okalahoma his companion was left a widow; his three little daughters were made fatherless. In his parents home in Yellville there was a vacancy that never can be filled. Mrs. Clarence HIGHT, Mrs COWDREY'S sister, and her husband in Fayettville were notified of the death, and they wired relatives here that they were leaving at once by auto for Burbank. They arrived there early Sunday morning. The Masonic fraternity in Burbank, of which Mr. COWDREY was a member, took charge of the body and had it propared for burial, and looked after the funeral arrangements. Early Sunday morning the body was conveyed to the church in Burbank, where a short Masonic and religious service was held, after which the body was conveyed to the railway station and put aboard the train in charge of H.G. GOAD , a brother Mason and friend of Mr. COWDREY, and the journey to Yellville, his old home town, wasbegun. It arrived here on the 1:20 train, Monday. Mrs. COWDREY and her three daughters, Janice, Kathleen, and Billy, accompanied by Troy COWDREY, Thurman's brother and his family, Mr. And Mrs. T. J. PINKSTON Lucian Layton, Miss Ethel GOLDSBY, all of Burbank, and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence HIGHT of Fayettville, came through in autos, arriving here about four o'clock Monday afternoon. A committee appointed by the Master of the Masonic lodge in Yellville, met the train at Zinc and accompanied the body t the station at Yellville where a large delegation of Thurmans's friends and friends of the family met them. The body was taken to the home of his father where it laid in state until 2:30 Tuesday evening when a short funeral service conducted by the Reverends YATES and PEPPERS, was conducted at the home, after which the Masonic order took charge of the body and it was conveyed to the Layton cemetery where it was laid to rest with Masonic honors in the presence of a host of sorrowing friends and relatives. In his Death we are reminded of the fact that life is filled with tragedies, and that no one knows when the had of death will be laid upon them.. Thurman was born and reared in Yellville, and received his education in the public and high school in this town. In 1912 he was married to Miss Alsie BERRY, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. BERRY of this town. They had known each other from infancy. To this union three children were born, Janice, Kathleen and Billy. Several years ago they moved to Oklahoma where Mr. COWDREY was engaged in the telephone business and at the time of his death he owned the Burbank telephone exchange and was getting along nicely, and making plans for the future, but "the loved and loving son, brother, husband, father, and friend, met heath where manhood's morning almost touched noon, and while the shadows still were falling toward the west, " for he was only in his thirty-eighth year. The Echo joins the many friends of the family in extending to them heart-felt sympathies in the great sorrow. The large funeral procession that followed the remains of Thurman COWDREY so the cemetery on last Tuesday and the large and beautiful floral offering testified to the high esteem in which he was held by his hundreds of friends in his native town. As an evidence of his true worth in Burbank, his adopted home, the public schools were dismissed at noon Tuesday, and remained closed for the remainder of the day. Quite a number of Masons from Cotter and Mountain Home attended and participated in the funeral services of Thurman COWDREY Tuesday evening Mr. and Mrs. Ben ESTES of Harrison attended the funeral of Thurman COWDREY, their grandson in Yellville last Tuesday.

W.M. TATE
For twenty-one years W.M. Tate has been engaged in farming in Nowata county, residing all of this time on his present farm of one hundred and forty acres, four and one-half miles southeast of Nowata. He was born in western Kansas on the 4th of December, 1873, a son of P.A. and Margaret (Barnes) Tate, the former a native of Kentucky and the latter of Indiana. They moved from Iowa to Kansas one year before W.M. was born and located in Lincoln county, where they lived two years. At the termination of that time they went to Osborne county and the father took up a homestead and timber claim there, acquiring three hundred and twenty acres in all. For eight years they resided on that farm and then sold out, removing to Nemaha county, where they rented farm land until 1894. In that year they came to Indian Territory and located on the Verdigris river, three and one-half miles east of Watova. Leasing land from the Indians, they cleared it and brought it to a highly cultivated state during the eight years of their residence thereon. After two years on a farm in Chautauqua county, Kansas, Mr. and Mrs. Tate returned to Indian Territory and for two years resided on a farm three and one-half miles east of Bartlesville in Washington county. Subsequently they removed to the farm on which W.M. now resides, and the father engaged in farming here until his demise on the 1st of February, 1918, at the advanced age of eighty-one years. Mrs. Tate is still living, being in her seventy-fourth year, and she makes her home with her son, Jesse Roy Tate, in Marshall county, Kansas.
W.M. Tate received a limited education and at an early age put his textbooks aside and engaged in farming. For twenty-one years he has resided on his present place of one hundred and forty acres, four and one-half miles southeast of Nowata, and during this time he has won for himself an enviable position among the representative farmers and stockmen of the state. He has one hundred acres under cultivation and he raises high grade beef stock and hogs. In addition to the original tract he leases three hundred acres. He has a modern two-story residence on the farm with substantial outbuildings and well repaired gates and fences.
Mr. Tate has been twice married. His first wife was Dora Wing and their marriage was celebrated in 1891. She became the mother of one child, William J., now twenty-one years of age. In 1906 Mr. Tate was married to Sarah Estes and to the second union seven children have been born: Jennie May, Gladys Marie, Mildred Margaret, Ruby Pauline, Alfred B., Opal Clata and Charles Rea.
Mr. Tate gives his political allegiance to the democratic party and the principles for which it stands and for many years he has been a director of the school board of District No. 39. He is one of the public spirited and progressive citizens of Nowata county, and his influence has been felt in many movements for the development and upbuilding of the community.

She died around 1902 and is buried at the Nowata Cemetery next to William Vernon and Sarah Elizabeth. We ar not sure when Ephraim and Marinda (Luvina) came to Oklahoma. Per Uncle Neil Northcutt. Uncle Billy met my Aunt Betty while Uncle Billy was working at a service station for my Grandpa Malcom in Seminole Oklahoma on old hwy 99.
July 26, 2004 I called Uncle Neil and he told me that my Aunt Betty had died. He gave me the information, then I went on line and checked with the California Death index. Uncle Neil also said that Betty was the only child not born in Nowata. That she was born up by Stigler (now a ghost town). That Billy parents had a boarding house in Seminole MO. That Billy's parents moved out to Colton California then came back to OK then returned and lived by Billy and they are buried there along with Billy and Betty. Uncle Neil believes that Billy's name is William Earl that his fathers name was William and mother name Alta.
