Elizabeth, May 5, 1788; married Thomas Rogers, and lived to the great age of ninety nine years, four months.

(II) Eliakim Merchant, son of John and Prudence (Stoddard) Marchant, was a soldier of the war of 1812, and one of the earliest settlers of Washington County, New York. He obtained a large tract of that then wilderness, cleared a large farm, built a house and ultimately became one of the wealthiest farmers of the county.

He married Charity Birge. Children: 1. Lansing, born April 16, 1804; married (first) Maria Ives; (second) Isabella E. Bronk. 2. Harriet, born March 13, 1806 married (first) Rodney Buel; (second) Nelson Buel. 3. Walter, see forward. 4. Lucena, born February 7, 1810; married Edwin Brock Nash. 5. Phoebe, born December 11, 1816; married Charles Grandison Truner. It was in this generation that the spelling of the first syllable of the family name became Mer, and the name Merchant.

(III) Walter, son of Eliakim and Charity (Birge) Merchant, was born on the Washington County homestead, June 26, 1807. He attended a country school, and in the early manhood acquired suchliberal information that he was never at a disadvantage either in business or society. When about twenty-five years of age he came to Albany and formed a partnership with his elder brother Lansing, in the wholesale and retail grocery business, at the corner of Division and Quay streets, in which they continued until the great fire in August of 1848. They then gave up the grocery business, but rebuilt their store building and engaged as grain merchants, which they pursued with much success for forty years, when both the brothers retired. They were the leaders in the enterprise, buying grain in bulk and boatloads from canal boats, and reshipping to various markets. Walter Merchant was originally a Whig in politics, and allied himself with the Republican party on its organization in 1856. He was an attendant at the Baptist church. He was honored for his spotless integrity and for his equable person character. He was alive to every public interest, and a helpful friend to those needing assistance. Whether moral or financial. He died Oct 22 1896, in the ninetieth year of his age.

He married Caroline Doughty, born in Dutchess County, New York, May 4, 1807, died August 29, 1900, daughter of Martin and Lydia (Collins) Doughty. Children: 1. Caroline, born June 20, 1835, died September 25, same year. 2. Elizabeth, twin with Caroline, died September 12, 1835. 3. All I have is a hand written Genealogical Chart prepared on Jan 7, 1881 that shows Ezekiel Married to Jerusha Gott with Vashti born 1787 (Obtained from Richard M Birge). I also have a web listing from Ernest Birge that shows that connection.
Do you have other information on the Birge Line.... I am looking for information on the part of the family that went to Carolinas and Georgia.

Hi Scotty:
I have been looking for information on Vashti Birge for 30 years. I am a member of the Root family. I know that Vashti Birge married Ephraim Roote, Jr. in Piermont, NH. I have a copy of their marriage certificate. She was 16 years old in 1803. Their is a mention of her in the Root Genealogy by James Pierce Root. I have a list of her children. The last child, a daughter named Vashti Root married a Bixby in Erie Co. New York. I have a birth record in the town records of Piermont, NH. No other information is known. Sonnet

When Mary Lovinia Noble was 13, she boarded the first Erie Canal boat to go all the way to Rochester with her family. They traveled to Lake Erie, where they boarded another boat bound for Detroit. There her father, Jeremiah took off on horseback for the Milwaukee trading post in Wisconsin. His wife, Amanda (Wilcox) Noble, & children boarded a third ship which took them to Milwaukee by water, all around the State of Michigan. Jeremiah set up shop in Milwaukee. Mary helped in the store & met William Birge there. They moved out to the frontier & built a cabin where their first son Julius was born, the first European child ever born in what was to become Whitewater, Wisconsin. Mary later moved to St. Louis, Missouri with her son, who returned her to Whitewater to rest beside her husband in death.

Leander Birge brother to Dana Birge
Posted by: Sharlee, 16 July 2003
I am searching for information on Leander Birge family. I found what appears to be a lot of the children of William and Minerva (Fox) Birge to be living in the 1850 census in Wisconsin, Walworth County, Whitewater Twp. The July 23, 1850 census shows that Leander had two sons, James R. age 6 and Charles age 4. Can anyone help me with information on this family.

My Great Grandfather was Julius C. Birge, Leander Birge was his uncle. There are many stories in my family about Leander and his brother William (my great great grandfather) and how they were the first to settle Whitewater. We have the ledger from the 1840s from William Birge's flour mill (Leander and Dana's brother). William was apparently a very powerful man who was renowned for his ability to lift a full grain sack in each arm and hold it out at arms-lengeth. His mill was very successful and he opened a general store and became a leading citizen of Whitewater, but died suddenly of appendicitis in 1860 while on his way to the Republican nominating convention for Abraham Lincoln. I don't know anything about Leander's children however (or Dana's children for that matter). My father may know more. We have a number of family records that were handed down from Julius Birge.

CHILDREN OF LEANDER BIRGE AND FRANCES OSTRANDER:

i. JAMES R. BIRGE, (LEANDER, WILLIAM, SR., EZEKIEL, JONATHAN, DANIEL, JR., DANIEL, RICHARD) was born 15 April 1844 in Whitewater, Walworth, WI; died 23 March 1868 in Whitewater, Walworth, WI. Buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Whitewater, Walworth Co, WI.

ii. CHARLES E. BIRGE, (LEANDER, WILLIAM, SR., EZEKIEL, JONATHAN, DANIEL, JR., DANIEL, RICHARD) was born 15 October 1845 in Whitewater, Walworth, WI; died 19 April 1877 in Whitewater, Walworth, WI. He married HARRIET IMOGENE STARIN, 22 December 1868. She was born 28 April 1847 and died 29 May 1924 in Whitewater, Walworth Co., Wisconsin.

Waterford Biographies HENRY BIRGE
HENRY BIRGE, who has occupied his fine farm of 180 acres of land in section 3, Waterford Township, Oakland County, for more than a half century, was born in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, October 24 1816. His father was William Birge, a clothier and wool comber by trade.
William Birge was a son of Elijah Birge, who was born in Connecticut and was an officer in the Revolutionary War, a descendant of one of the passengers on the "Mayflower," the three Birge Brothers, who came on the "Mayflower" being John, Hosea, and Ezekiel. Elijah Birge had five sons, - Elijah, William, Augustus, Ezekiel and john, --two of whom took part in the War of 1812. The children of our subject's parents, William and Minerva (Fox) Birge, the latter of whom was born in Connecticut of English parentage, were as follows: William, now a resident of Whitewater, Wisconsin; Leander a wealthy farmer, Henry, of this sketch; Dana, a successful farmer of Wisconsin and Franklin, a prominent farmer living in Dodge County, Wisconsin. The father was a successful, high principled man of business and was engaged for a number of years at both Ithaca and Newfield, New York. His latter days were spent in the home of his son Henry, where he died at the age of 80 years. He was a pillar of the Methodist church and was an honest, upright man of highest personal character. The parents of our subject moved to Tompkins County, New York, when he was a babe and he grew up on a farm, which he left at the age of 20 years, and removed to Waterford Township, Oakland County. He then joined his two brothers at Whitewater, Walworth County, Wisconsin, where he farmed 160 acres for a few months, but returned to Oakland County, and first bought a farm near Pontiac and then spent a short time at Lansing, later locating on his present farm where he has continued to reside for more than 50 years. About 80 acres had been cleared and there were two log houses and a barn 32 x 72 feet on the place, but the country was still unsettled, game was abundant and he can recall a tribe of Indians passing single file by his door for the space of two hours. Mrs. Birge cleared his own property and much land for others. He has done general farming in a sensible, practical way, and has been particularly successful in raising sheep, cattle and horses, taking prizes for his fine Durham cattle and Southdown sheep. While not as extensive a grower as some, his flocks and herds have always been considered of the finest. Twice he has practically stocked the State Argicultural Farm with sheep. He sold to Van Colt of New York the finest pair of horses that ever left Oakland County, and has taken premiums at all the fairs. Mr. Birge was married to Sallie Staples, who was born in Tompkins County, New York, and died some seven years since, a daughter of John and Catherine (Buzzard) Staples, and they had these children: Mrs. Fannie Coffron, the widow of a wealthy lumber dealer of Lapeer County, who has five sons and five daughters; Minerva, who died aged 17 years; John W., who resides with his father and helps to operate the home farm, --he has three children; George S., a resident of LeRoy, Kansas, who has three children; Mrs. Jennie Swift of Harbor Springs, Michigan who has six children; and Mrs. Minnie Drewatt, of White lake, Oakland County, who has two children. All of these sons and daughters have had high school education. Mr. Birge has held many offices and has always been prominent in the township In politices he is a Democrat. He is probably the oldest of the name in the United States and is one of the partriarchs of Oakland County, where he has witnessed wonderful developments and has taken an honorable part in its growth and progress.
