Book by Gerald & Charlotte Groves of Willow Springs Missouri entitled; "Howell County, Missouri Post offices, Postmasters and Their Communities Volume Four."
Page 176 Trask Missouri Oct 30 1897 - November 30 1933
About six and a half miles west and a mite south of Mountain View, where Route V crosses the roadbed of the old Current river Railroad and Howell County road 308, is the place a post office called Trask was established October 30 1894.
The land around this four section corner area was not vigorously settled until the railroad branch was built across the north part of Howell County. And George W. McAllister became the owner of the northwest corner of Section 35 on October 27 1897 under the Homestead Act.
Page 177 George W. McAllister was appointed postmaster number 3, December 20, 1897. George and his wife, Sarah G., were listed in the 1880 census with their daughter, Edna, age 17. Only one postmaster kept the office longer than Mr. McAllister's 11 years.
Page 184 Bertha G. Johnson replaced George W. McAllister as postmaster of Trask on Aug 12 1908. Page 187 Gladys Bishop took the postmaster's office in Nov 9 1921. She went on to be the occupant who lasted longest in that office, with 11 years and 6 months. Her nearest competitor was George W. McAllister, who kept the office 10 years and 8 months.

Book by Gerald and Charlotte Grove's Volume Four, continued:
Page 181 "Mrs. Campbell left the first of the week for Des Moines, Iowa, on an extended visit with relatives and friends. Des Moines is Mrs. Campbell's old home."
On July 19 1906, it was reported that Mrs. G. W. McAllister was quite sick with malaria; the little son of Tom Walker had died, with interment being in the Walker Chapel Cemetery, and Mrs. H. G. Campbell had returned from Des Moines where she was called by the illness of her two sons, Floyd and Wendell. Another son, Richard, and a little grandson accompanied her.
G. E. McAllister purchased a couple of fine colts at Mtn. View.
March 11 1996 information told to me by My Aunt Mary McAllister Hope, that she could remember her Dads mother living off and on with them, in fact, he built a tiny room off of their tiny house with what 9 children, so she could have some privacy. That was in Alley Springs.

Notes for SARAH JANE 'SALLY' GRIFFITH:
Received this email Aug 8 2004 from Ted Brewington
"Subject: Sara Jane Griffith
Sharlee: I was on Rootsweb and saw your listing on Eugene McAllister, do you know where the family was in 1900-1920. I know that Sara had died by 1928 according to an obit on her father, she had five other siblings, all had died except Mary E. Godsy Koger, she died in 1950 in Carter Co MO. Clyde McAllsiter was at the funeral, said that he was from Summersville MO. Sara's mother was Millie Brewington her and John Griffith were married in Madison Co MO., on Jan 26 1872. Millie was the sister of my GGgrandfather William Peyton Brewington. I found a John Griffith with two kids in Texas or Howell Co MO in 1900. His age is one year off and he gives marriage years right even though his wife had already died if right one. Johns obit says he was married in 1871 a year off and tells that Millie died in 1893. I haven't found him or the other kids in 1910 or 1920 except Mary. I just wondered if you knew anything else. Ted Brewington"

Newspaper article, Lewiston Idaho, Sunday May 10 1942

FIVE STARS adorn the service flag in the window of a humble home at Juliaetta, FIVE STARS, that signify the sacrifices of a mother who has five sons in the armed service of the United States. Five symbols that represent fighting men who once toddled around the knees of their mother and who now wear the uniforms of the Marines, the Coast Guard, the Cavalry and the Field Artillery scattered in unknown fields overseas. While a mother years for word from her fighting men, five sons would , if they could, remember her on this Mother's Day, with bowers of crimson carnations, Mrs. Vada O. Hicks, 56 whose jet black hair and roseate complexion conceal the rigors through which a mother of five sons and three daughters has passed, yesterday tenderly displayed the photographs of her sons bravely outlined to the Tribune a significant fragmentary story of an American family.
Vada Olevia Rowe was born at Hutton Valley, Missouri, April 8 1886, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Rowe. Her dad was a Civil War Veteran who served through 1862-1865 and passed away at the age of 93. In 1902 when she was but 16 she was married to William Henry McAllister. Spanish War Veteran who served three years as top Sergeant in the Philippines. He is now 76 an returned and resides at Lynn Haven, FLA. Mr. McAllister is 21 years older than Mrs. Hicks. On June 2, nine years ago, following a divorce, she was married to Charles Hicks, Juliaetta cattle buyer. She has lived at Juliaetta 18 years, moving there from Centralia Washington.
Born in Missouri "It may seem a might sacrifice to give all of my five boys to the armed service of the nation, but they're the kind of boys that keep the flag flying." said Mrs. Hicks. "Four of them were born in Missouri and Tom, the baby, was born at Juliaetta. I have tried to bring them up as good Americans and I believe that I have succeeded. Our lives have not been blessed with luxuries and riches, but the companionship of my family has offset all that.
"When the boys were young, it was difficult to keep things together back there in Missouri. I worked hard. I helped cut railroad ties from heavy Missouri oak, lifted heavy timbers and worked hard on the farm for those boys and when they were old enough they helped me. Their father is a Spanish War Veteran and their grandfather fought in the Civil War, so I guess they come by their patriotism naturally. They're all gone now, all of my boys and girls, but I remember them when I had them with me. We came west from Missouri in 1903 and the children are imbued with the freedom and liberty of the west.
Oldest in Marines "My oldest boy, George William McAllister, 37, is in the marines. I have not seen George for four years and at that time it was 14 years since I saw him. He was for several years head mechanic in a large garage at Santa Cruz. His wife is an army nurse. He was born at Hutton Valley, MO. I don't know where George is now. "Wilson Henry McAllister, my second son, who is now 29, was born at Summersville, MO. He was in the Marine Corps four years and then enlisted in the Coast Guard. Preceding his military experience he was employed by the Santa Fe railway at Fresno. I don't know where he is. "Jesse Revos McAllister, my third son, who is now 27, has been with the Marine Corps eight years and is now a top Sergeant. He was born at Summersville, MO. While at San Diego he was a sergeant in charge of training platoons and up to last August had trained 92 platoons. He sailed from Australia March 9. His wife is a canteen worker at San Diego.
"Chester Oliver McAllister, who was 21 on Feb 23, is in the cavalry at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana. He enlisted two years ago and is now a Sergeant. He also was born at Summersville, MO. "Thomas Jefferson McAllister, my baby boy who is now 18, is in the field artillery in Hawaii. He enlisted at Lewiston last July and was in Schofield Barracks when the Japs stabbed Pearl Harbor and 360 were killed. Tom attended school in Florida and at Juliaetta, where he was born. I tried to keep him out of the service because of his age, but he insisted on going and I finally consented."
The three daughters Mrs. Pauline Birge, Pomeroy Washington; Mrs. Mary Denz, Seattle, Washington and Mrs. Allie Bolcerek, Stockton California.
Grand Dad Veteran The McAllister boys have apparently inherited the military urge from their father and their grandfather. It's in the blood. G. W. Rowe, their grandfather, volunteered in the United States Army on July 19 1862, in the Civil War at the age of 19, according to his life story appearing in a Missouri Paper. The regiment was made up in Springfield, then sent to Prairie Grove under General Haron and ordered back to Pilot Knob in June 1863. Marching under orders to Little Rock, the regiment was without food for three days and nights as the roads and swamps were impassable. "On July 4 I asked my quarter master if he had anything to ear," Rowe recounted. "He handed me the ham bone of a hog, which I roasted for my dinner. Marching to Clarendon Arkansas, we met old General Steele with 32,000 infantry and two regiments of cavalry. "We had bushwhackers to fight all the way from Brownsville, Ark., which we reached on Aug 25. The last day of August we were within four miles of Little Rock, Sept. 1 we made a pontoon across the Arkansas River and 11 regiments of cavalry crossed over. The southern army found out we were coming and called all of the troops out of the breastworks. They were fortified from the river to the hill. We started fighting on Sept 10 at daylight and continued until 11 that night with the southern army in retreat. We followed them all the next day, returning to the city at night for a rest in camp. "In 1864 I cast my first vote for Abe Lincoln in what was known then as Indian Territory. At Fort Smith, Ark.., we were starving as were our horses. We moved into the territory to get cane for the horses and mutton, without salt or pepper for ourselves. It was the finest eating we'd had in days. Our rations had been issued for 10 days and were were out 37. "We then camped at Little Rock and Durall Bluff and other spots in Arkansas until Feb 25 1865, when smallpox broke out in the camp. March 1, I was moved to a hospital. That was the last I remembered until March 26. I couldn't move a muscle, but laid flat on my back between two sheets for days. The doctor, ward master and steward were sure I wouldn't recover or if I did he wouldn't be able to work. They were badly mistaken. I reached home in July and married Mahalia C. Hood in October 1865." This very large Section of the newspaper shows a picture of Great Grandmother Mac, as she was called. Also pictured; George, Wilson, Jesse, Chester and Thomas.
Note, her family, because of her health had to put her in a nursing home in Moscow Idaho. Previously, she lived in Juilaetta, Idaho for some time.
*************
I can remember all of the times as a small child, that we would take the long drive to Juliaetta Idaho to see Grandma Mac. That is what my dad called her. We would always, my sister Jackie and I would help our dad the best we could, cutting up cord after cord of wood for her. I remember her wood stove. I always wanted to have one when I grew up.
I can remember her beautiful garden and her flowers. She had a tiny little house, always neat as a pin. She also still had at least one feather bed. It would be so cold and my sister and I would snuggle up in the feather bed. She always fixed great food when we came. She loved her Bible and Billy Graham. I have her bible in my possession as well as her old address book. She never missed a Birthday or Christmas with a beautiful card and hanky. I have kept all the letters she wrote to me when I was small and when I got older even after I was married. You know she was shorter than me and I am SHORT.
I remember she made pickled watermelon rin. She would always take us around her tiny house and show us what her family had sent to her since the last time we visited. She was so proud of her children. She is the person, who so many years ago got me started in genealogy. I still have the torn old sheets of paper she started to write everything down on.
The story that my grandmother Vada Pauline, her oldest child, helped her deliver either Chester or Thomas, she said her mother after giving birth, got out of bed and went to work in the field that very day. My great grandparents did divorce, great grandmother did re-marry for a short time I believe, then divorced that person. We never talk about it, they never had any children.
