I am descended from the Lard/Laird family of Jennings County, and am writing a history of that family. I have the following information regarding Rebecca (Hammond) Lard and James Hammond. I have much more information about this family, including Rebecca's children, grandchildren, etc, and the same for Samuel's children by a second marriage.

Rebecca Hammond was b. 7 March 1772 "near New Bedford, Massachusetts" and
baptized at Mattapoisett, Rochester, Massachusetts on 12 April 1772 ("Records
of the Second Church of Rochester (Mattapoisett)", Vital Records of
Rochester, Massachusetts to the Year 1850, Vol. 1, p. 54). She was the dau.
of Jabez and Priscilla (Delano) Hammond. She d. near Paris, IN, 28 Sept.
1855. (Gravestone read by Sharon Seaver in 1980 and obituary in Notes from
Old Newspapers, Madison, INdiana, p. 119) She was married to Samuel Lard 12
Feb. 1801 at Woodstock, VT. (State of VT, certified copy from Woodstock Town
Records, Marriages and Births)
Children, all b. VT:
Samuel came to Jennings Co. in 1813. The family, including Rebecca, did not come until 1820. Rebecca was a published poet. She taught school. The divorce from Samuel was granted in Jennings Co. on 26 Mar. 1828.
James Hammond was b. 22 Nov. 1787 in Connecticut and d. 7 Feb. 1853 in
Jennings Co. He m. Julia Lard in Jefferson Co. on 22 March 1821. The ceremony
was performed by Thomas Hill, first minister of Coffee Creek Baptist Church.
James was not related to Julia's mother, Rebecca (Hammond) Lard. James had
lived in NY prior to coming to IN.
