Robert McCune    1830 - 1905

Robert McCune (John3 McEwen, Richard2, John1) was the second child born to John and Margaret Abigail Bingham McEwen October 05, 1830 in Lawrence County, Indiana, but the (death certificate and 1880 Census said he was born in Ohio).

He migrated with his family from Indiana to Rushville Township, Schuyler County, Illinois between 1832 - 1846. Robert McCunes name, doesnt appear in any Illinois Census before 1860. Spelling of name (McEwing) on 1860 Census in Rushville Township, Schuyler County, Illinois. Listed was Robert, Elizabeth, Jackson, and John.

He married Elizabeth Forbes a daughter of Francis A. and Sarah Ann Campbell Forbes, June 06, 1856 in Schuyler County, Illinois, by Rev. J. M. Powers.

They had five of their eight children in Schuyler County. Then the family moved from Schuyler County, Illinois to St. Albans Township (Hancock County) in 1867.

Their farm was located in West Point, R1, St. Albans Township, section 9 and consisted of 297 acres. The next Census they appeared on is the 1880 taken in Saint Albans, Hancock County, Illinois. Listed was Robert, Elizabeth and their eight Sons. Also listed was a Servant, E. Elston.

Robert was listed in the Hancock County Atlas as farmer and stock dealer. He would go around the country and buy cattle and take them to the "Home farm" to fatten them up. He would buy cattle in Missouri and ferry them across the Mississippi River to the Illinois side. He said one time he had a load of cattle on the ferry, and they stampeded in the middle of the river and turned the ferry over, and they swam to the Illinois side.
They would always have hogs running behind the cattle to clean up the waste feed. When the cattle were ready for market they were driven a mile and a half to the stockyards in West Point and shipped to Chicago.

Robert was the one they say changed the spelling of the surname MCEWEN to MCCUNE, but as I discovered by looking at his marriage license to Sarah Range, that he could not read or write, because he (made his mark). What I think is how the name got changed by other people filling out documents for him (they spelled it how they thought it sounded).

Elizabeth divorced Robert on October 10, 1890 and here is letter written by her lawyer from Carthage, Ill. October 10, 1890 "This afternoon the Court granted your divorce by signing the decree annulling the Marriage of yourself to Robert McCune. The question of household goods is not yet disposed of but I will get that matter disposed of tomorrow all satisfactory", John B. Risse.

Elizabeth died 1901 in Albans Township, West Point, Hancock County, Illinois. She is buried in the West Point Cemetery. On October 22, 1890, he married Sarah Range a daughter of John and Catharine Range. They had four children, two sons and two daughters.

Robert died April 09, 1905 in St. Mary's Hospital, Quincy, Adams County, Illinois and is buried in the Cook Cemetery (St. Albans Township, Hancock County).
