Buchter/Boughter

Buchter/Boughter Family of Berks, Montgomery and Chester Counties, PA

My earliest proven Buchter ancestor is Martin Buchter, who was born about 1799, probably in Berks County, PA. He could be the son of Matthias Buchter and Elizabeth, but so far I have no documentation to prove this.

New Hanover Lutheran Church records show that Martin married Elizabeth Baer on May 23, 1825. She was the daughter of Henry Baer and Elizabeth (nee possibly Lessig). Emmanuel Lutheran Church records show that Martin and Elizabeth had a son Samuel born August 8, 1823 and baptised January 1, 1824, sponsors Henry and Elizabeth Baer. The same church records show a second son Henry (my ancestor) born February 25, 1825, baptised on April 21, 1825 with sponsors Frederick and Sarah Baer - Frederick was Elizabeth's brother. It is possible that the marriage date for Martin and Elizabeth was recorded incorrectly, although it is also possible that the first two sons were born prior to the official wedding. In addition to Samuel and Henry, Martin and Elizabeth Buchter had the following known children: Martin (b. 1828), Elizabeth (b. 1829), David (b. 1834), John (b. 1836), Emeline (b. 1841) and Matilda (b. about 1844). Elizabeth died sometime between the birth of her last child and the 1850 census. Martin survived her many years. He can be found living with daughter Matilda and her husband Charles Welker in Harrisburg, PA in 1880.

Henry Buchter, son of Martin and Elizabeth, married Rachel Levengood on August 1, 1847, as recorded in the New Hanover Lutheran Church records. For most of their married life they lived in Douglass Township, Berks County, PA, where Henry was a carpenter and later an inn keeper. By 1880 they moved to near by Earl Township in Berks County and by the time of Henry's death in 1887, they were living in Pottstown, Montgomery County, PA. They had nine children seven of whom were Elizabeth, Catherine, Amanda, Sarah, Mary Ann, Rachel and Henry. Another possible son is George, who was born abt 1857 and died in August of 1859. Henry died March 22, 1887. His wife Rachel died May 26, 1911. Sometime around 1880 they started using the anglicized spelling Boughter.

Rachel, daughter of Henry and Rachel (nee Levengood) Boughter, was born February 3, 1863. She married Charles Dilliplane on January 21, 1882. Shortly after their marriage they moved from Berks County to Pottstown. They were my great-grandparents, their son Walter Leonard Dilliplane being my paternal grandfather.
