Babcock, Clarence Lewis Thurs 19 Aug 1954 Fort William Daily Times Journal
A resident of the district for 54 years, Clarence Lewis Babcock, 68, of Paipoonge Township, died in hospital last evening following a short illness. Clarence Babcock had farmed on the Scott Highway in Paipoonge Township since coming to this district 54 years ago. Born in Rock Falls, Ill., on May 22, 1886, he came here with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Elon G. Babcock, when he was 14 years of age. The family took up a homestead in Paipoonge Township and Clarence Babcock had resided on the same site until his recent death. In failing health for the past six months, he had been in hospital since Friday. He was well known throughout the district. He specialized in dairy farming and for many years had a regular route of customers to which he delivered dairy produce. Years ago he exhibited the purebred Holstein cattle at the Lakehead Exhibition. He was predeceased by his mother in 1934 and his father in 1939. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Mattie Babcock at home and cousins in this district and the United States. He was an adherent of the Slate River Baptist Church and a former member of the Orange Order Fort William Lodge 1093. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from the Jenkens Funeral Home with Rev. Donald Sinclair of Slate River Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the family plot, Mountain View Cemetery.

The death occurred at midnight last night at the home of her grandson, E.H. Peterson, 424 Wiley Street, of Mrs. Jeanette Howe Begley of Moose Hill. She was 83 years of age. The late Mrs. Begley was born at Tweed, Ont in 1849, daughter of the late Solomon and Margaret Howe. In 1870 she married Maurice Henry Begley who pre-deceased her in 1913. Mrs. Begley went to Nipigon from White River in 1902. She resided in that place until 1924 when she came to this district. She had been residing with her daugher Mrs. E.H. Workman, of Moose Hill, until her recent illness. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Workman, and Mrs. Thomas Neve pf Lethbridge. Eigth great grandchildren and eigth grandchildren survive also. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

92 Years Old Pioneer of District A. Murray Bell Dies. First reeve of O'Connor township and resident of Fort William district for 45 years, Andrew Murray Bell, 269 West Amelia Street, died in hospital this morning after an illness of about three months. Mr. Bell was 92 years old. As one of the pioneer residents of O'Connor and Conmee Townships, Mr. Bell took a leading part in the early development of that area. He continued his interest in agriculture when he moved to the city and his garden on West Amelia Street was one of the finest in Northwestern Ontario. Despite his years Mr. Bell was vigourous and mentally keen and alert until his recent illness and his death removes a valued link with the historic past. Born on August 23, 1853 at Tamworth, Lennox and Addington Counties, Ont., Mr Bell came to Fort William in 1901 with his wife and family. O'Connor and Conmee. After residing here for about five years, he farmed in O'Connor and Conmee townships, when these areas were just being opened up. Mr. Bell was elected the first reeve of O'Connor Township and also served on the school board for many years. He maintained his interest in the townships and was never happier then when discussing plans for improvemnet of conditions in the rural areas. Twenty-five years ago Mr. Bell moved with his family to Kakabeka Falls, where he was retired. In 1930 he and Mrs. Bell moved into Fort William and had reside there since. In 1937 Mr. and Mrs. Bell celebrated their Diamond Wedding Jubilee in Fort William when they were recipients of cangratulatory messages froma host of friends throughout the city and district and the east. Mr. Bell delighted in the out-of-doors and was fond of taking long walks, a habit to which he attributed much of his robust health. Many descendents. Mr. Bell is survived by his wife; one son Edwin A. "Ted" timber contractor, 110 Edward Street; and four daughters, Kate, Mrs C. Taylor, Kakabeka Falls; Maud, Mrs. M. Johnson, Petrolia, Ont.; Rose, Mrs Nicholson, South Gillies; and Eva, Mrs. W. Wilson, Minneapolis, Minn. Mr. Bell also is survived by 34 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sons and one daughter: Herman M. Bell and Thomas R. bell, formerly of Fort William; and Winnifred, Mrs L. Smith, formerly of Detroit. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at two o'clock from the Jenkens and Son Chapel. Rev J.D. McKenzie, minister of the First United Church will officiate. Burial will be in the family plot, Mountain View Cemetery.

E.A. (Ted) Bell Stricken at 66. Long-time resident Edwin A. (Ted) Bell, 66 of 110 South Edward Street, died at home today following a heart seizure. Born in Lambton County, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Murray Bell, he came to Fort William with his parents when eight years old. He worked for Ray Street Bank, Canada Starch Co. Ltd., Canadian Bank of Commerce and Cameron and Heap Wholesale Company as an accountant but since 1927 he has been a timber contractor, mostly in the Black Sturgeon area, removing timber to local paper mills. Mr. Bell was a member of the United Church, Fort William Chamber of Commerce and Business Men's Club. Survivng besides his wife, the former Phyllis Sandell, whom he married in 1916, are two daughters, Laura (Mrs. W.R. Bond) of 439 East Mary Street, and Barbara (Mrs. P. Moore) of 2625 Moodie Street; 13 grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Charles Taylor of Home Avenue; Mrs. J. Nichol;son 339 North Harold Street; Mrs. J. Johnson, Petrolia, and Mrs. W. Wilson of Minneapolis, and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lily Bell, at home. he was predeceased by a son, Edwin Earl in 1952; two brothers, Tom and Herman, and a sister, Mrs. Winnifred Smith.

The funeral of Edwin A. (Ted) Bell, 66, of 110 South Edward Street, who died Tuesday was held Thursday afternoon. Rev. Dan McIvor of the United Church officiated. Internment was in the family plot, Mountain View Cemetery. Attending were officials of Great Lakes, and Abitibi Woodlands divisions; former employees of the district, including the Black Sturgeon area, and representatives of Lakehead Wholesale firms, timber contractors and equipment suppliers. Honorary pallbearers were Donald Hassard, Stewart Young, Clarence McDevitt, Harold Sandell, Bob Mapledoram and Dr. J.S. Strachan. Active bearers were Gordon Simpson, Martyn Tribe, Aubrey Bell, George Prout, Orval Black and H. Nash. From out of town were a brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Wilson of Minneapolis, and a nephew Roy Bell of Vancouver.

The funeral of Herman M. Bell, of Pearson Township, who died May 8, was held yesterday afternoon from the Jenkens and Son funeral home at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. Elgin G. Turnbull, pastor of Wesley United Church officiated. The Service was largely attended with many friends attending from both the lakehead and the rural areas. Many beautiful flowers were received. Two hyms were sung "Lead Kindly Light" and " Abide With Me." Mrs. Don McMichael presided at the organ. Pallbearers were E. Johnson, Alex Wamsley, Charles Taylor, Edwin Nicholson and Sam Liddicoat. Burial was in the family plot in Mountain View Cemetery. Mrs. E. James, of Minneapolis, a sister of Mr. Bell, arrived in the city to attend the obsequies.

The death occurred Saturday night at the family home of Helen Belto, 18, daugher of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Belto, of Nolalu. Death followed a lengthy illness. Mr. and Mrs. Belto are old time resdients of the district, having lived here for more than 40 years. Besides her parents, she is survived by two brothers and four sisters. They are; Lempi, living at home, Mrs. William Harry, Mrs Edward Harry, Mrs. William Knuttial, Walter and Toivo, all livng in Nolalu district. The funeral will be held Tuwsday afertnoon from the family residence in Nolalu. Rev. J.E. Nopola of the Finnish Lutheran Church will officiate and internment will be in Nolalu Cemetery.

The death occurred this morning at the family residence at Nolalu of Toivo Edward, 30 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Belto, pioneer residents of that locality, death followed a long illness. The young man, born at Nolalu was well known through out that area and his death will be greatly mourned. he was a member of the Gillies Lodge of the Orange Order and a general favorite. Besides the bereaved parents, one brother and four sisters survive. They are Walter, Mrs. Edward Harry, Mrs. William Knuuttila, all of Nolalu region and Miss Lempi, living at home. Another sister Helen died June 22, just a month ago at the age of 18. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon from the family home with burial in Nolalu Cemetery.(This name given at the cemetery is Pelto)

Resident of the district for 18 years, Mrs. Walter Bengtson died unexpectedly late yesterday afternoon in hospital here. She resided at Finmark and was 45 years of age. Death came as a result of a heart ailment and word of her passing came as a shock to her many friends in the district. She was born in sweden. Surviving are her husband, who is section man with the C.P.R. and four daughters, Ivy, Fern, Ruby and Palmie, all resident of the family home in Finmark. Also survivng are her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. L. Losquist, of Ellis, Ont., and a sister, Mrs. D. Olsen of North Towanda, New York. Mrs. Bengtson was a member of the Finmark Women's Institute and also a member of the Vasa Order. Funeral arrangements still are pending word from the family.

The funeral of Mrs. Theresa Bengston, wife of Walter Bengston of Finmark, who died unexpectedley last Wednesday, will be held this coming Wednesday from the Jenkens and Son Funeral Chapel at 1:30 o'clock to the Finnish School for service at 3 o'clock. Rev C.P. Peterson, formerly pastor of what now is called the Zion Lutheran Church will conduct the services and burial will be in the family plot in Sunshine Cemetery. Mrs. Bengston was born in Sweden 45 years ago and had resided at Finmark for the past 18 years. Shew as well-known in the district and also in the twin cities. She was a member of the Finmark Women's Institute and also of the Vasa Order. She is survived by her husband and four daughters, Ivy, Fern, Rubie and Palmie, all at home. Philip Berry, pioneer homesteader of O'Connor township and resident of Fort William Manor the past six years, died in hospital early today at the age of 86. Mr. Berry, native of Hamilton, Ont., where he received his education, came to Flint, in O'Connor township, in 1899 to cut out for himself a farm. He lived there until his retirement six years ago. In 1932 he lost everything when his farm burned. The pioneer wasBerry, died June 7, 1943. He was also predeceased by a sister, Mrs. E.E. Back in 1935 here. Mr. Berry was the sole remaining member of the original family of five brothers and sisters. Nephews and nieces at the lakehead include D.L. Cameron, Rankin Street; Elsie, Ernest, Sandy and Emily, all living at South Franklin Street; Jack at Armstrong; Philip at Auden, Ont.; Mrs. James Foulds of Red Rock and Mrs. Don Brownlee of Fort William. Other relatives are also living here. Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 8:30 o'clock to St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church for services at nine. Internment will be in the family plot, St. Patrick's Cemetery. The rosary will be recited Sunday evening at eight o'clock in the chapel.

Miss Stella Jane, age 21, of Murillo, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Berube, died unexpectedly Tuesday July 10, 1962 in hospital. She was born at Murillo and attended St. Augustine Separate school, Baird and St. Patrick's High School, Fort William. She worked at the News Chronicle office and then entered the Order of Sisters of St. Joseph's as a postulant at North Bay and continued her studies in Sudbury. She was forced by ill-health to retutn home one year ago. She was a member of St. Augustine Church, Baird, and a member of the Church choir. Survivng are her parents, five brothers, Gerald, Royal Canadian Navy, Halifax, N.S.; Phillip of Toronto; Joseph, Terrence and Lionel at home; aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives. A sister Madeline predeceased her in 1952. The body is Resting at the Everest Funeral Chapel, 299 Arthur St., pending completion of funeral arrangements.

Bhyllryde, Margaret Sat 19 July 1924 Fort William Daily Times Journal
Miss Margaret Bhyllryde, a partner with Mrs. K. Bowerman in lumbering operations at Silver Mountain, during the past winter died in McKellar Hospital last evening following a short illness. Death was attributed to pneumonia. Miss Bhyllryde was 36 years of age and had come to Fort William from Toronto last spring to go into lumbering this district. She had herself during the past winter driven a logging team for a considerable part of the time. It is stated that heavy work in the woods in no way contributed to the cause of her death, her health having being unusually good as a result of the out-of-door life. Her death weas quite sudden, terminating a short illness in the hospital. Among the relatives residing locally are a number of cousins, Mrs. Bowerman, Mrs. Arthur McIntyre, J.C. Wright, Mrs. N. Smith and Mr. Joseph Wright. The funeral will be held on Monday afternoon to Port Arthur Protestant Cemetery. Miss Bhyllryde was to been married a couple of years ago to Albert Davis of Toronto but he was killed the day before their wedding day in a railroad accident.

The death occurred Monday after a lengthy illness of John Billington, 65, of Cloud Bay. The late Mr. Billington had resided in the district the last 11 years but for the last 5 years had resided at Cloud Bay. He was a member of the Masonic Order, Wascena Lodge, Regina, also formerly was a member of the Knights of Pythias of that city. He is survived by one son and one daughter living in Winnipeg and one daughter living in Peterborough. A brother T. Billington resides in Toronto. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the home of Mrs. N. Silles, Cloud Bay. Rev. D. McIvor will officiate and internment will be made in Cloud Bay Cemetery.

One of the original pioneers of Oliver Township and a resident of this district for 49 years, John Bingham, died early this morning at his home, 2 Banning Street, Port Arthur, aged 74. He had been ill only a short time. Mr. Bingham was born in Tyrone, near Oshawa, Ont. and moved to a farm near Murillo in 1881. After working for several years on the farm he moved to Port Arthur where he had resided since, being one of the best known of the older citizens of the city. He was an active member of the Trinity United Church. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Arthur, 68 High Street North and Gilbert of 66 Hill Street North, both of Port Arthur, and Russell, at home; also four daughters, May, Mary, Lottie and Esther, all at home. Two sisters, Mrs. J.W. McPherson, of Des Moines, Iowa and Mrs. V.G. Palmer of Chicago, as well as four grandchildren also survive. The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon, a short service at the home being conducted by a service in the Trinity United Church at three o'clock. The Rev. H. Heathfield will officiate and internment will be made in Riverside Cemetery.

The death occurred early this morning, following a lengthy illness at the home of her niece, Mrs. Murdock Mathison in Paipoonge Township, of Mrs. Ellen Jane Bird, wife of William J. Bird. Besides her husband she is survived by one brother William Foley and her niece, Mrs. Mathison. The funeral will be held Saturday morning from the Mathison residence to the Roman Catholic Church at Harstone at 9:30 o'clock. Rev. Father Regan will officiate and internment will be made in the Harstone Cemetery.

William John Bird, 71, a resident of 1-455 East Brock Street, died in hospital last night. Although he had been in hospital one week, he had been in poor health for more than a year. He was born at Market Harbor, Leicestershire, Eng., and came to Canada at the age of ten. He lived for some years in Pembroke, Ont., and he came to this district 56 years ago. He was engaged in farming in the district until 1917 at which time he started work for the Fort William Fire Department. He retired in November of 1951. He married Miss Edith Anderson 24 years ago. He was a member of First Church United. He is survived by his wife, one son Robert, at home; three daughters, Louise, Mrs. J. Dodmarchuk, of 3-455 East Brock Street; Jacqueline, at home; and Ruth, at home; one granddaughter and a brother Peter of Peterborough, Eng. Nieces also survive in England and the United States. The funeral will be held Monday from the Jenkens Chapel with Rev. D.M. Burns oof First Church United officiating. Burial will be in the family plot at Mountain View Cemetery.

A district resident 62 years and well known in mining, lumbering and horticultural circles, Arch Bishop, 72, died at the family home, 298 North Court Street, Port Arthur yesterday afternoon. He was the father of 13 children--six daughters and seven sons; four of which are serving in the Armed Forces. Born in Houghton, Michigan, Mr. Bishop came to the Lakehead 62 years ago, first working in the Silver Islet mine and later at Silver Mountain. Subsequently he spent most of his life lumbering, as a hunting and fishing guide and in pursuit of his favorite hobby--horticulture. One of Mr. Bishop's most interesting projects was instituted at "Eve's Islet" in Whitefish Lake, where he experimented in the culture of an infinite variety of fruit trees and shrubs not indigenous to this country. Mr. Bishop was widely known for his prowess as a hunter and woodsman and he was well known here and in the United States as an operator of summer camps. Latterly he conducted an experimental garden at his Balsam Street home. Survivng are the sevens sons, Archie of Beardmore; Cpl. Harold of the 25th R.C.A.M.C. Vernon, BC; Lt. Harvey Bishop with the Canadian Army in Belgium; Capt. Allan Bishop, recently wounded in action oversease; Tpr. Clifford Bishop on active service in Holland; Floyd of Peter Street and Elmer at home. The daughters are Elva, Mrs. John Richmond; Mildred, Mrs. John Styffe; Eva, Mrs. Fred Gibbons; Elinore, Mrs. James Couture, all of Port Arthur; Irene, Mrs. Frank Chapple, Fort William; and Elta, Mrs. John Turk, Mead, Ont; one brother, Harry Bishop, Hamilton; four sisters, Mrs. R, Sandoe, Mrs. H.B. Dawson and Mrs. B.W. Shaver of Port Arthur and Mrs. W.S. Merkely of Brooklyn, N.Y. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon from Sargent's Chapel at 2:30 to Riverside Cemetery with the Rev. T.S. Watson of St. Paul's United Church officiating.

The double funeral of Aimo Euren, age 36, Intola, and Alfred Blixt, 27, Kivikoski, who were both killed in a truck crash near Armstrong last Thursday was held at 3:15 p.m. yesterday from the Everest Funeral Chapel to Riverside Cemetery for burial. Rev. R.A. Ranta officiated. The funeral was largely attended. Pallbearers for Aimo Euren were George Paavala, Edwin Nurmi, James Dawson, Dick Strawson, Duke McKinnon and Don McLean. Pallbearrers for Alfred Blixt were Bill Wainio, Ray Wainio, Norman Makela, Ray Takala, Bruce Niemi and Mauno Luhtala.

The funeral of John Bodnar, 72, pioneer resident of Paipoonge township, who passed away in hospital Friday was held this morning at 8:30 from the home of a son Jospeh, Mountain avenue to the Ukrainian Catholic Church of Ascension at 9. Attendants at the services marched from the home to the church where Rev. Father Chyz officiated at requiem mass. The mass was largely attended by friends of the deceased from the city and district. Impressive funeral services were held in Murillo United Church yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock for the late David Bour, pioneer resident of Murillo who died in hospital here on Friday morning. The funeral was held from the Jenkens and Son funeral home to the Murillo Church at 1:45 o'clock. The service was largely attended and many beautiful flowers were received. Rev. J. Anderson pastor of the Murillo United Church officiated. He spoke words of comfort to the members of the bereaved family and referred to the work of the late Mr. Bour, as an elder of the church and of his qualitites and worth as a citizen and friend. Two hymns were sung "Abide With Me' and "Blest Be the Tie That Binds" Rev. E. Roberts sang "Jesus Saviour, Pilot Me" Mrs. C. Hill presided at the organ. Burial was in the family plot in Stanley Hill Cemetery. Pallbeareres were; J. MacDonald, Alfred Felker, Norman McNally, Harvey Gorton, Harvey McNally and Roy Bingham. William Bour, son of the deceased came to the lakehead from Toronto to attend the obsequies.

Mrs. Mary E. Bourdot, 89, of West Frederica Street, widow of William W. Bourdot, died in hospital Tuesday following a short illness. Born at Peebles, Scotland, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Kirk, she was married at Crossens, Enmgland to the late Albert Wooler. She came here 50 years ago with her family and resided in Slate River for 10 years and worked as a telephone aoperator. She has lived in Fort William since. In 1930 she married William W. Bourdot and he predeceased her in 1939. She was a member of Slate River and Fort William Women's Institute and Pythian Sisters. She is survived by dour daughters, Anne (Mrs. L.C. Peck) Empire Avenue; Ivy (Mrs. M.R. Elliot) Winnipeg; Lily (Mrs. E.R. Craigie) Toronto; and Rose (Mrs. L.G. Hadfield), Frederica Street with whom she resided. Also survivng are four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two brothers, John Kirk of England and Robert Kirk, East Brock Street and other relatives. She was predeceased by a son Albert in Oct 1956.

Mrs. Emma Brillinger, 75, of Fort William, died this morning in hospital. The former Emma Schrumm, she was married in 1910 to the late James A. Brillinger. They went to Slate River from Buffalo, N.Y. following their marriage. They farmed for five years and operated the Brillinger General Store for 25. Following Mr. Brillinger's death in 1949, she went to Fort Willaim where she had made her home since. Surviving are two brothers, George Schrumm of Grimsby, Ont., who is arriving here and John of Smithville, Ont., two sisters Mrs. K. Fisher, Smithville, and the other sister in Buffalo. She was an adherent of the Church of Christ Scientist. She was active in the community life and the Women's Institute. The body is at the Funeral Home, 225 South Syndicate Ave., Fort William.

A former pioneer resident of Slate River, William A. Brock died at Walnut Park, Los Angeles, California on Friday according to word received by G.R. Duncan. death followed a comparatively short illness. The late Mr. Brock resided in Slate River for about 15 years prior to leaving for California about ten years ago. He operated the Bowlker farm now owned by E.E. Johnson of the Pigeon Timber Company. The late Mr. Brock came to the district from eastern Ontario and during his residence here, he became well known and respected highly. He will be remembered by a host of farmers and residents of the lakehead. He visited here about two years ago. Besides his widow, he is survived by three daughters, Edith, Mrs. Dave Montieth; Isobel, Mrs. Howard Mitchell and Alice, Mrs. F. Szchokke and two sons, Loring and Elmer, all of California. The funeral service was held at Los Angeles.

Alexander Brown, pioneer farmer of Hymers in 1899, died at Wroxeter, Ontario last night at the age of 66. Born at Burleigh in Peterborough County, the late Mr. Brown came to this district in 1899. A year later his family came to the lakehead. In 1913 his wife died and later on he married a second time. In the last year of the war the family moved to Fort William, where they remained until 1922. In February of that year they moved east again and settled on a farm near Wroxeter. He was married in 1892. He is survived by his wife, seven children and ten grandchildren. Mrs. J.R. Munro of this city; Mrs. D.H. Lennox of Emo; Roland Brown of Fort William; and Hazel Brown, also of the city are among the children. Mrs. E. Parker of Port Arthur, a sister. The late Mr. Browns mother died only a year ago at the age of 103.

Mr. John (Jimmie) Brown, aged 70 years, resident of 2242 Sills St., died in hospital Thursday afternoon, Oct. 25, following a short illness. He had been hospitalized the past week. Born at Wormitstone, Fifeshire, Scotland, as a young man came to Canada and settled at Port McNichol, Ont. In September 1939 he enlisted in the RCAF, serving overseas in India and Burma. On his return and following discharge he came to Fort William and has resided here since. He was employed on the millwright staff of the Great Lakes Paper Company retiring in October 1970. He was married to Miss Mary Ellen Clapp March 11, 1931. In his younger days he had been active in soccer, football and was always an ardent fisherman. Member of the Presbyterian Church, the Great Lakes 20 Year Club, Great Lakes Athletic Association, and the Great Lakes Conservation Club. Born at Cavan, Ireland, Mrs. Brown resided there until she was 36 years of age and came to Port Arthur to live. She resided there for a short time and then moved to Marks Township and later to Hymers. During her long residence in the district, Mrs. Brown made a wide circle of friends who learned of her death with sincere regret. She was an active member of Hymers Women's Institute and a devout member of Hymers United Church. She is survived by her husband, one brother, R. Farmer, North Marks Street and one sister Mrs. K. Sabine of Vancouver. Tpr. Michael Sabine who is in Belgium recovering from war wounds is a nephew and Theodora Sabine of Vancouver is a niece. The funeral will be held Friday from the Blake Funeral Chapel to Hymers Union Church for services at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. D. McIvor, M.P. will officiated and burial will be in Hymers Cemetery.

Attended by many friends of the family from the surrounding district, impressive funeral services were held yesterday afternoon for the late Mrs. Sarah Brown, wife of Thomas Brown of Hymers. She died Wednesday. The funeral was held from the Blake Funeral Chapel to the Union Church, Hymers for services at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. Dan McIvor, M.P. officiated. he paid tribute to the excellent worth of the deceased and spoke words of condolence for the bereaved members of the family. Three hymns "Nearer My God To Thee" "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "Jesus Lover Of My Soul" were sung. Mrs. Frank Sitch presided at the organ. Burial was in the Hymers Cemetery. The pallbearers were D. Drew, Edward Hymers, B. Sitch, C. Edwards, O.B. Turk and J. McLaren.

One of the real pioneers of the district, Mrs. Susan Brown, wife of Thomas Edgar (Teddy) Brown, Whitefish Lake, died yesterday in hospital after a short illness. She was 92 years old. Mrs. Brown was removed to hospital on December 27. Her condition gradually became weaker and she passed away last evening. News of her death will be received with heartfelt sorrow by a wide circle of friends not only in the lakehead but in many points south of the border. Born in Glengarry she came to this district in 1886. At that time, her father, the late Duncan Cumming was employed at the Silver Mountain Mines. Since 1902 she had resided at Whitefish Lake where Mr. Brown operates a Fox farm & hunting lodge. Mr. Brown was one of the first fox farm operators in the district and during hunting seasons he and Mrs. Brown catered to hunters from the Lakehead district and from points in the United States. She was a member of the United Church. Besides her husband she is survived by several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 3:20 o'clock from Jenkens and Son Funeral home. Rev. D. McIvor will officiate and burial will be in Riverside cemetery, Port Arthur.

Attended by many friends of the family, impressive funeral services were held yesterday afternoon for the late Thomas Brown, 84, retired farmer of Hymers, who died Saturday. The funeral was held from the Blake funeral chapel to Hymers United Church for public services at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. J.E. Scharf, minister of the church officiated. He paid tribute to the fine worth of the deceased and spoke of his long residence in the district. Two hymns "Abide With Me" and "What A friend We Have In Jesus" were sung with Mrs. Frank Sitch presiding at the organ. Many floral tributes were received. Burial was in the family plot, Hymers Cemetery. The pallbearers were Frank Sitch, Edward Hymers, Wesley Hymers, Elmer Parker, William Parker and Bruce Turk.

District pioneer and labor organizer, Henry Alfred Bryan, 84, of 217 Victoria Street, Port Arthur, died early this morning after a three weeks illness. He was born in Worcestshire, England. A former pioneer settler of Dorion, Ont., he first came to Canada 78 years ago. Educated in Niagara Falls and St. Thomas, he resided in Cleveland, Ohio before the family moved to Canada and settled in 1901 at Dorion. As a young man at Cleveland he became associated with the labor movement and organized for the the American Federation of Labor. In this capacity he was closely associated with Samuel Gompers, former president and journeyed throughout the United States and Canada. Since his arrival in the lakehead, he continued active in labor circles, organizing some of the first labor unions here. In 1921 he was a charter member of the Workers Party of Canada and energetically campaigned for the party's candidates up to 1939, inlcuding E.A. Smith. He had resided in the city for the past three years. His wife Idela predeceased him in 1906. Surviving are a son George of Jellicoe, Ont.; Mrs. E.A. Harkness of Murillo; Mrs. J.D. Pedden of Kenora; Mrs. P.N. White of Port Alberni, B.C.; Mrs. C Bareth of Port Arthur; Mrs. C.H. Richardson of Fort William; a brother, Rev. F.J. Bryan of St. Cloud, Minn.; 40 living grandchildren and over 50 great grandchildren. The funeral will be held at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon from the Everest and Son Funeral Home. Burial will be made in the family plot, Stanley Hill Cemetery.

Many old time friends of the family were in attendance this morning at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church to pay final tribute to the late Timothy D. Buckley, 123 Cameron Street to St. Patrick's Church at 9 o'clock. Rev. Father Moore officiated at requiem high mass. Mrs. R. Bishop presided at the organ and Basil Shaughnessy sang feelingly "Nearer My God To Thee" as the casket was being removed from the church. Many beautiful floral tributes were received. A lengthy procession of automobiles followed the hearse to St. Patrick's Cemetery where internment was in the family plot. Rev. Father McFarland officiated at the graveside. The pallbearers were: J.J. Coghlan, W.J. Whelan, M. McGraw, H. Otway, W. Laderoute, and James Hogan.

A farmer of Nolalu since 1930, Rev. Elijah Bundock passed away this morning at the family home at Nolalu following a three-year illness. He was 76 years of age. Mr. Bundock was born in England and came to Canada to make his home 40 years ago. He first worked in Toronto and Mimico on the buliding of new houses and later moved to Saskatchewan where he preached amongst friends. For a number of years he resided in Regina and in Moose Jaw. He came to Nolalu in 1930 where he farmed until his illness three years ago. He was a firm beliver in the old-time gospel apostolic belief and was a member of the International For Square Gospel of Evangelism. Mr. Bundock is survived by two sons and two daughters. The sons are Herbert and Stanley of Toronto. The daughters are Winnifred, Mrs. A. Gibbons of Toronto and Florence also of Toronto. The body is resting at Jenkens Funeral Home pending the completion of arrangements.

A resident of O'Connor township for 38 years, Rankin Burrows, 73, of Kakabeka Falls, died in hospital this morning following a lengthy illness. Born at Carlton Place, Ont., he came to Port Arthur in 1910 and moved to O'Connor township in 1916. Since that time he had farmed near Kakabeka Falls. He was a member of the United Church Lodge No. 21. He served several terms with the O'Connor School Board and was well known throughout the district. He is survived by his wife, at home; a daughter, Mrs. Gladys Continue, Brent Street, Port Arthur; two grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was predeceased by a brother George in O'Connor township in 1919. His parents also died in the district. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Jenkens Funeral Home with Henry Ford, Rural life Missions officiating. Burial will be in the family plot O'Connor cemetery. The funeral will be held under auspices of the O'Connor Orange Lodge.

Mr. Frank Buurke, age 78 years, resident of Kaministiquia, died in Thunder Bay Regional Hospital Port Arthur site on Saturday, June 8, 2002. Born in the Netherlands he came to Canada in 1951. For many years, Frank was a dairy farmer in Kaministiquia and also worked as a watchman for Saskatchewan Wheat Pool from which he retired in 1989. Frank enjoyed bowling and was also a member of the Kaministiquia Disking League. He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church (Arthur Street). Frank is survived by son Julian (Sherri), grandchildren Ashley and Garritt all of Thunder Bay. Frank is predeceased by his wife Jane February 24, 2002 and parents Jurjen and Anje Burrke. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at 1:30pm in the First Christian Reformed Church, with Rev. John Boonstra officiating. Interment will follow at Stanley Hill Cemetery.. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2002, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the First Christian Reformed Church. Mrs. Jane Buurke age 73 years, a longtime resident of Kaministiquia, died in St. Joseph´s Hospital, on Sunday, February 24, 2002. Born in the Netherlands she came to Canada in 1952. For many years, Jane worked alongside her husband on the family farm. Her lifelong passion was sewing. She was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church (Arthur Street). Jane is survived by her husband Frank, son Julian (Sherri), grandchildren Ashley and Garritt all of Thunder Bay, sister Hermina Wagter and brothers Jan and Jantinus Wagter all in the Netherlands. Jane is predeceased by her parents, sister Zwaantje and brothers Berend and Willem. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 28, 2002 at 1:30pm in the First Christian Reformed Church, with Rev. John Boonstra officiating. Interment will follow at Stanley Hill Cemetery.
