Funeral services for the late Mr. Tom Galvin who passed away at the home of his daughter on Friday was held on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in St. John's Church, Rev. F.H. White officiating. Deceased was 86 years of age and was born in England. He had made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Wetherill for the past six years. He leaves to mourn his passing, one daughter Mrs. A. Wetherill of Kelwood, and three sons; Bill of Fort William, Ronald of Vancouver; and Alf of Atikokan; also 9 grand children, to whom we extend sincere sympathy. Internment was made in the local cemtery. J. Neill was in charge of the funeral arrangements. Pallbearers were Messrs B. Potick, J. Brodie, F. Macdonald, F. Murphy, R. Storrie, and Mr. Whightson.

Mr Archie Gamble, aged 79 of Pearson Township passed away in hospital Thursday Jan 4, 1979 following a lengthly illness. Predeceased by wife Frances Mary (Williams) Dec., 1970 survived by daughters Audrey, (Mrs. Spencer (Jack) Gillis) RR#1 South Gillies, Crystal (Mrs. Elchuk) 151 N. Court St. and son Keith, Walsh Road, Thunder Bay, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Sister Mrs. Isabella Gamble, Thunder Bay and brother Walter, Moosejaw. Born in Leicester, Leicestershire, England, Jan 7 1899, son of Walter and Emily Gamble, the family came to Canada in 1901, settling in Dorion in 1902, moving to Port Arthur in 1937. He was employed at Canada Car during World War II. Mr. Gamble worked as a prospector for many years in Northwestern Ontario, Northwest Territories, Saskatchewan, and B.C., retiring in 1972. Predeceased by his parents, sister Elizabeth (Mrs. Joe Arthur) Emily, (Mrs. Sam Arthur), Margaret (Mrs. George Jones) Jasper, Alta., and brother Ernest, Vancouver. Funeral services for the late Mr. Archie Gamble will be held Monday Jan 8, 1979 at 1:30 p.m. in the Sargent and Sons Funeral Chapel 21 N. Court Street. Conducted by Ven. Archdeacon E. Roy Haddon. Interment in Riverside Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Ontario Heart Foundation, or other charity of your choice. Visitations from noon Sunday

A pioneer O'Connor Township farmer, councillor and school trustee, Charles Oliver Garbutt of Kakabeka Falls died in hospital this morning at the age of 87 years. Although in poor health the past month he had been hospitalized only a week prior to his death. The late Mr. Garbutt came to O'Connor township as a homesteader in 1901 and farmed until he moved to Kakabeka Falls and retired in 1947. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he moved to Hamilton as a child with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. David Garbutt. Raised and educated in the Steel City, he joined the Royal Canadian Northwest Mounted Police in 1888 and saw service on the Prairies, spending considerable time at Willow Creek, near Lethbridge, Alberta. In 1893 he left the Mounties and came to the Lakehead area, where he was employed on construction jobs in bush camps for eight years before taking out a permit to homestead in O'Connor. Married to the former Miss Mary Anderson, at Campbellford, Ontario, in 1907, he is survived by his wife and four sons. They are Alex of O'Connor township; David of Stevens; Howard of Dog River; and Chester at Kakabeka Falls. A sister, Mrs. H. Crestmount, of Montreal and six grandchildren also survive. Two daughters predeceased him in infancy. The late Mr. Garbutt's home and family were always his main interests but for many years he took an active part in the affairs of O'Connor township and served on the township council and school board for a number of years. He was a member of the United Church. The body is resting at Jenkens Funeral Home pending funeral arrangements.

Mrs. Maude McMichael, Burnaby B.C.; other relatives alos survive. Predeceased by husband John in 1930; daughter Grace in 1960 as well as six brothers and three sisters. Tribute to one of Thunder Bay District's pioneer farmers was paid by throngs of rural and urban residents who attended impressive funeral services conducted yesterday afternoon for the late Duncan Gillespie of Slate River Valley. Obsequies were conducted at the First Church United, the edifice being crowded with people from all walks of life who came to pay last respects to the late pioneer. The funeral was one of the largest ever held from the Church. The cortege proceeded from the Jenkens' Funeral Parlors to the Church where the services were held at two o'clock in the afternoon. Rev. D. McIvor officiated, assisted by Rev. Robt. Dewar. Rev. Mr. McIvor spoke of the career of the late Mr. Gillespie and paid high tribute to him as a pioneer, a man, and a community builder. The casket was banked high with floral tributes. Two favorite hymns were sung. From the church the funeral procession passed slowly out of the city to Mountain View Cemetery where internment was made in the family plot. The pallbearers were four sons and two nephews of the deceased, Leslie, Stanley, Glenn, Thomas, Donald and Charles.

Mrs Alex Gillies, aged 61 years, former resident of 709 Dease Street died in hospital Tuesday evening, March 28th, 1978 following a lengthy illness. Born in Huron County, Ontario she was the former Miss Eleanor Wamsley, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William George Wamsley. She was married to Herman Bell in 1915 and he prdeceased her in 1936. She was remarried to Alex Gillies in 1945 and they farmed in Slate River, later lived on the Rosslyn Road till moving to Dease Street. Mr. Gillies predeceased her here in 1977. Member of the First Church United, honorary member of the Pearson Womans Institute. She is survived by son Aubrey Bell, daughters Jennie, Mrs Tom Craig. Norine, Mrs. Gordon Rahmer. Jean, Mrs. George Blake, all of Thunder Bay. Winnie, Mrs. Bert Oakley of B.C., step sons, John and Campbell of Thunder Bay and Russell with the Canadian Armed Forces in Egypt. Step daughter Maureen, Mrs. Herbert Schmidt of S. Gillies. There are 67 grandchildren, 80 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. Besides her husbands, she was predeceased by 2 sons, 2 daughters, 2 brothers and one sister. Services will be held Friday at 1:45 p.m. in the Jenkens Funeral Home. Rev. Kenneth Moffat will officiate and Internment will be in the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Should friends desire, memorials to the Ontario Heart Fund or the Diabetic Association would be appreciated

The death occured this morning of Mrs. John Gillies, Arthur Street Road, at the age of 66 years following a long illness. Mrs. Gillies came to the head of the lakes two years ago from Melita, Manitoba, where she had resided many years. She was born at Scarboro Junction, Ont., and her husband and family moved to the west more than 25 years ago. Her husband conducted a successful farm at Melita. Surviving her are her widower, six sons and daughters. They are Archibald and Alexander of Arthur Street; William, Gore Street, Fort William; Margaret, Mrs. Rooks, Swan River, Man.; Sarah, Mrs. Melville Mays, Arthur Street. Three children predeceased her. Four brothers and two sisters are also left to mourn her loss. They are William Doherty, Toronto, Dr. Alexander Doherty, Agincourt; Hugh Doherty, Scarboro; Professor John Doherty of St. Michael's College, Toronto; Miss Agnes Doherty and Miss Sarah Doherty of Scarboro. The time of the funeral has not been decided upon but services will be conducted later at Blake and Henderson's parlors following which the remains will be taken to Melita, Man. for internment.

Attended by a large number of friends of the family, impressive funeral services for the late Norman Wesley Gillies, 2, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Gillies, North Neebing were held yesterday afternoon. Norman was injured fatally on Sunday night when run over by a truck at the home of his parents. The funeral was held at 2 o'clock from the Blake Funeral Chapel. Rev. D. McIvor of First Church United, West Fort William, officiated. He spoke feelingly of the loss to the family and words of comfort to the bereaved members of the family. Many beautiful floral tributes adorned the little white casket. One hymn "Safe In The Arms of Jesus" was sung. Mrs. R.M.Boyd presided at the organ. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery.

Mrs. Margarete Johanne Julie Goertz died at Hogarth Westmount Hospital in Thunder Bay, Ontario in her 96th year on February 14, 1996. Born March 31, 1900 in Schattern, County of Memel, East Prussia, Germany, she was the daughter of Julius and Johanne Friederike Louise Schukat (nee Pichler) who predeceased her in 1918 and 1945 respectively. She was married to Paul Gerhard Goerttz-Powarben in 1927. He predeceased her in a Russian prisoner of war camp in May of 1945. Also predeceased by son Peter Goertz in July 1992. Survivng are sons Dr. Adalbert E. Goertz and his wife Barbel, 5 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren in Pennsylvania, U.S.A. Johann Goertz and his wife Janet and three children in Thunder Bay, daughter Ida Laschutza and her husband Helmuth of Freiburg, Germany as well as other relatives in the USA and Germany. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated. A private family burial will be held at Leepers Cemetery, Nolalu. A memorial service will be announced at a later time. Everest Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.

A pioneer resident of Oliver Township and well known in the lakehead district, Albert Gorton died yesterday afternoon at about 2 o'clock at the family home. He was 80 years of age. Although in poor helath for the last five months Mr. Gorton was cheerful at all times. His death came quietly in the presence of his wife. News of his death, although not entirely unexpected, caused deep regret in a wide circle of friends in the district. Born at Simcoe, Ont., Mr. Gorton was a former railroad conducter on the Michigan Central Railway and was employed with that railway for 20 years prior to coming to this district in 1905. Coming here he obtained a homestead in Oliver Township and from the thick bushland hewed himself and family's home and farm. Today the Gorton farm is one of the best known in the district. Active in the welfare of the community, Mr. Gorton wa a former councillor on Oliver Council. He was a former member of the L.O.B.A.; Independent Order of Foresters; Brotherhood of the Railway Trainmen. He was a member of the Murillo United Church. He is survived by his wife, three sons and one daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Gorton would of celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on July 15, 1946. The sons are Leonard, St. Thomas; Jack and Ray, living at home. The daughter is Rita, Mrs. C. H. Scott, 226 Brunswick Avenue. There are three grandchildren, one living in St. Thomas and two in the district. Several nieces and nephews live in the district and in the east. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon from the Blake Funeral Chapel to the family home for a short private service at 2 o'clock. The cortege then will proceed to Murillo United Church where a public service will be held at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. M.J.V. Shaver will officiate and burial will be in the family plot, Stanley Hill Cemetery.

The funeral of Mrs. Eliza A. Gorton, 88, of Oliver Township, widow of the late Charles Gorton, was held at 2 p.m. Saturday from the George E. Blake Chapel to the family plot, Stanley Cemetery. She died Thursday. The largely attended services were conducted by Rev. J.W. Parsons of Murillo, with Mrs. Jean McMichael at the organ for the hymns "What A Friend" and "Abide With Me." Pallbearers were Fred Boulter, Raymond Gorton, Cecil Scott, Fletcher McNally, Harvey McNally and Roy Bingham.

Robert Grainger of Oliver died this morning in St. Joseph's Hospital Port Arthur, aged 52 years. The deceased was one of the old residents of Oliver Township and was very well known in both city and country. He has been in poor health for sometime. The body is now at the undertaking rooms of Dawson & Thompson where it will be held until Thursday morning. The funeral will be held at the Knox Church, Murillo on Thursday at 1 o'clock. Internment will be at Stanley. The deceased leaves two sisters and one brother. The sisters are Mrs. Frank G. Green, living in Michigan, and Mrs. Roderick McDonald of Oliver. Stephen Grainger of this city is a brother.

The funeral of Peter Grant was held at 3:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon from the funeral home, 21 Court Street North, Port Arthur. Dryden Heavysage, assistant minister at Bay Street United Church officiated, The service was attended largely, especially by persons connected with the timber industry in the district. Pallbearers were; Alex Grant, Dr. T. McGillivary, Dr. R.A. Caldwell, J. McDonnell, C.H. Moors and W.H. Robinson. Internment was in Riverside Cemetery.

The death occured last night in hospital, following a short illness of Mrs. Elizabeth Jane Green, 70, widow of the late Hugh Green of Slate River. Mr. Green died in 1912. The late Mrs. Green was born on the Isle of Man, coming to this district to settle 25 years ago. During her lengthy residence in the district she had resided part of the time in Fort William. She is survived by seven sons, six of whom enlisted and went overseas, while five saw service in France. The sons are; William, Ogden Street; Hugh, Stirling, Scotland; James, Caroline Street; Stanley of Montreal; and John, David and Matthew of Slate River. Two daughters; Margaret, Mrs. John Cheal, 517 East Mary Street; and Elizabeth, Mrs. Edward D. Agombar, 713 Catherine Street survive also. A daughter, Mrs. W. Patterson died about two years ago. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence of Mrs. J. Cheal, 517 East Mary Street. Rev. D. McIvor will officiate and internment will be in the family plot, Mountain View cemetery.

Funeral services for the late Frank Granlund, 64, resident of Pearson Township, who died suddenly Sunday, were held at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon in Jenkens and Son Funeral Chapel. The Rev. R.W. Heikkinen of the Finnish Lutheran Church officiated and internment was in Mountain View Cemetery. THe funeral was largely attended by friends drawn from the surrounding district and the two cities. Two hymns were sung in Finnish with Miss A. Rantanen at the organ. Pallbearers were; Arvi Jutila, Alfred Olsen, Elis Johnson, Albert Salo, George Maki and Emil Wirta.

The funeral of John W. Groves, 76, of Cloud Bay, who died Friday, was held at 11 a.m Monday from the George E. Blake Chapel to the family plot, Mountain View cemetery. Rev. D.M. Burns of First Church United conducted the largely attended services and offered condolences to the bereaved. The deceased had been employed in district farm work for many years and formerly was a commercial fisherman and guide in the Sioux Lookout area. Pallbearers were Fred Stoppel, Henry Nelson, William Garton, George Randall, Thomas Logan, and William Brewer. W. Buchan, ATCM, was the organist for the hymn "Unto The Hills" Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Groves, brother and sister-in-law of Clarkdon, Ont., attended the last rites.

The death of Mrs. Lena Groves, wife of John Groves, of Silver Mountain, occurred in St. Joseph's Hospital early this morning after s short illness. She was 47 years old. She is survived by her husband. The late Mrs. Groves had lived at Silver Mountain for the past 21 years. She was well known in Port Arthur, Fort William and district. The funeral will be held on Thursday morning from the residence of Mrs. E. Suddaby, Algoma Street South to St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church. Internment will take place in St. Andrew's Cemetery.
