Oakley, T. Ed. Mon 14 Jan 1907 Fort William Daily Times Journal
T. Ed. Oakley, for several years secretary of the water and light commission of Fort William, died at his home in Slate River last night at 8 o'clock. It is no exaggeration to say that during the years of his life spent in this town there was no more poplular man than Ed Oakley. He was one of the fathers of our system of water and light and took an active part in the installation of the telephone system. In connection with C.H. Jackson, G.W. Brown and Joshua Dyke, the later being Mayor, Mr. Oakley worked out the details of building the system and made all the estimates for the purchase of the supplies. That was his last active work in connection with town affairs. Shortly after the installation of the telephone system, Mr. Oakley went to Gravenhurst hoping that he might stay the ravages of consumption that had already weakened his once strong frame. He remained there through the winter but he was pronounced incurable and he returned to his fathers farm in Slate River Valley and never again came to town. To those who visited him he was always as cheerful as when in good health and attending to active work. He always said he had no desire to come to town and he preferred to retain in his mind the picture of the old place as he knew it when helping to make it what it now is. Ed Oakley was one of the noblest of men and those who had the priviledge of knowing him and associating with him will look back on many a pleasant hour in his company. The funeral will be held tomorrow at the home of his parents, Slate River, at 1 o'clock on Wednesday.
