Johann Adam Eckelbarger (1740 - ?)

Background Information

Johann Adam Eckenberger/Eckelbarger, most often found simply as Adam, was born about 1740 in Germany. He married in Gerhardsbrunn in that country, "a farming village not far from the French border, in the Duchy of Zweibrucken in the heart of the Rhenish Palatine. At that time the village comprised 15 houses and farms. The village existed prior to the Thirty Years War, but it was destroyed and abandoned during that war" according to Neal Umstott. Adam was nearly thirty years old when he left Germany with his wife, Dorothea, and two young sons in tow. (Veltin/Valentine and Walther/Walter, then ages three and one years, respectively). The family arrived in America aboard the Ship Sally on October 23, 1767. (In addition, aboard the same ship as Johann Adam and family was a "Jacob Eckenberger" who was born before 1755. Was he a younger brother?)

Adam's family settled in Lancaster County in Pennsylvania where two more children were born to the couple. Between the summer of 1770 and 1771 the family drifted southward to Frederick County in Maryland where the last two of their six children were born. And that is the last known place of residence for Johann Adam; his date of death and place of burial are unknown.

Some of Johann's children may have died young. Others dispersed from Frederick County, Maryland, moving to other parts of that state as well as westward to Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. At least one branch of Adam's line eventually saw their surname evolve to "Ecalbarger", "Ecelberger", "Echelberger" and "Eckelbarger."
