Jacob was the youngest son of Abner Grant and Telitha Wilson. His mother died when he was five and his father died when he was ten. After the death of his parents he lived for a while with his sister Olive and her husband and then with his sister Willie and her husband. Jacob (Jake) began driving a school bus for the county in September, 1924. At that time he owned the bus and drove for the county on a contract. During the depression years(1929-1935) the state was without funds and gave him "Script" for payment. He was able to realize only about 50% of the value. Gussie's parents sent her to a boarding school in Pontotoc, Mississippi in the hope that they could break up the attachment between her and Jacob Grant. The family did not feel that Jacob was "good enough" for Gussie. The separation did not work, however, and after teaching only part of one year they were married, and lived happily together for almost 50 years. Abner Grant came to Pontotoc County, Mississippi at the age of 15. When Lee County was organized from Pontotoc and Itawamba counties in 1867 his home was in that county and he remained there until his death. He Joined the Confederate (Johnston's Mississippi Infantry) Army as a private, Co. C, 1st Regiment, Mississippi Volunteers on 2 August, 1861 At Poplar Springs, Mississippi. He mustered into service on 24 September, 1861 for one year at Iuka, Mississippi by General J. L. Alcorn. He was surrendered at Fort Donelson, Tennessee on 16 February, 1862 and remained a prisoner of war at Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Indiana from June through 24 August, 1862. Abner was released near Vicksburg, Mississippi in a prisoner of war exchange on 11 September, 1862. He reenlisted with the same company on 24 September 24, 1862 in Jackson, Mississippi. He was captured at Port Hudson, Louisiana on 9 July, 1863 and paroled on 12-13 July, 1863. He was listed in the muster of the same regiment in March - August, 1864. He was wounded at Franklin, Tennessee on 30 November, 1864, and admitted to the USA General Hospital in Nashville on 25 December, 1864 (Hospital diagnosis -- simple flesh wound of lower right thigh 3" laceration ). He walked with a limp for the remainder of his life. He was prisoner of war at Louisville, Kentucky. March 1-10, 1865 and transferred to Camp Chase, Ohio on 12 March, 1865 where he remained until he signed an oath of Allegiance to the US on 11 June, 1865. Tradition has it that Abner walked from Camp Chase to his home in Shannon, Mississippi after his release. Abner was instrumental in the building of Providence College for Young Ladies in North Mississippi. Several of his daughters attended this college. He was born on 29 March 1837 at Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. Abner Grant was the son of John W. Grant and Mary Ann Hugle. He married Telitha Elizabeth Wilson, daughter of William S. Telitha's mother died when she was about six years old, her Father married again when she was about eleven. Her Grandmother Nancy, who had possibly been very close died in 1857. All this may have led Abner Grant to marry her at an early age because of her unhappiness. The family traditions have it that he married her because he thought she was mistreated at home. George Andrew and his brother, John Henry, came to Mississippi from Abbeville, County, South Carolina in the early eighteen forties. They were listed in the 1840 census of Abbeville, South Carolina. They were listed in 1845 state census of Mississippi in Noxubee County, Mississippi where they apparently came first to their father's home and then to Itawamba County. They were both listed in the 1850 census of Itawamba, Co. Mississippi The story given to Mary (Rogers) Bucy, great granddaughter of George Andrew, and also the great granddaughter of Hannah Rogers, that they came to North East Mississippi by wagons and lived the first year in tents and the following year in a log cabins with dirt floors. George Andrew and his wife, Mary, were charter members #7 and #8 of Unity Presbyterian Church, Lee County Mississippi. This church was organized in 1848. The 1850 census of Itawamba County, Mississippi list the fifth child Sarah S., born 20 April 1842 as being born in South Carolina, but the sixth child John Watland, born 17 June 1844 as being born in Mississippi. This fixes the date of arrival in Mississippi between 1842 and 1844. He was born on 11 January 1810 at Newberry County, South Carolina. Kade A. Armstrong enlisted in Capt. William C. Bromley's Co., 2 Reg't Mississippi Volunteers on 6 February, 1861 at Richmond, Mississippi for a period of twelve months. He was discharged in Richmond, Virginia on 16 May, 1862. The reason given for the discharge was military exemption because of age. Kader A. Armstrong enlisted in Co. C. of the 12th Regiment Mississippi Cavalry on 12 February, 1863 by Captain. Cox. He enlisted as a 3rd Lieutenant at Verona Mississippi for the period of the War. Pay receipts indicated that he was paid $90 per month for himself and his horse. There was a Kaid Armstrong listed in the 1860 Census of Itawamba Co., Mississippi. and of the same age. Kedar Armstrong was a charter member of Plantersville Baptist church where he moved his membership from the the Fulton Baptist Church. He was one of the original deacons in this church. He was born on 10 May 1826 at Conecuh, Alabama.1 Kader A. Armstrong was the son of John Armstrong and Sarah Hawthorne. He married Hannah Matilda Rogers, daughter of Joseph Larkin Rogers and Hannah Holland, on 8 September 1851 at Itawamba County, Mississippi.2 Kader A. He married Bettie Thomas Moorman on 27 December 1864 at Pontotoc County, Mississippi.1 In the 1880 Census, Robert was listed as a head of household say July 1880 at Plantersville, Lee County, Mississippi.2 Robert was listed as the head of a family on the 1900 Census at Plantersville, Lee County, Mississippi. Robert died on 6 March 1922 at Plantersville, Lee County, Mississippi, at age 82. He was buried in at Union Cemetery at Lee County, Mississippi.3 |
