At the moment I am aware of three people in my family tree who were in the Civil War. All were born in Ireland. They fought in New York and Connecticut Infantry regiments.
One was my paternal grandfather's grandfather, Thomas E. Higgins. He was mustered from Brooklyn, NY in 1861 into Co. E of the 95th New York Volunteers. His obituary states that he fought in 14 Civil War battles. Indeed, it was in the 14th battle of his regiment, the Battle of the Wilderness, that he was captured and imprisoned at Andersonville and then Florence prisons for a period of ten months. He was carried out of prison by two brothers having the surname "French". After the war he lived Newark, New Jesey and his death notice invited members of the James A. Garfield Post No. 4, G. A. R. to his funeral.
Another member in the family tree was my ggrandmother's uncle John Early was in the 12th Connecticut Infantry.

Finally, the father of the husband of my ggrandmother's sister was James Nolan and he was in the 13th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. Family lore is that my ggrandmother's sister met her husband through her uncle.Spectator:
