George 'The 2nd' CARRUTHERS

The Carp Review Thursday 29 Oct 1908
Word was received here last Friday of the death of Mr. George
Carruthers (145) which sad event took place at Asquith, Sask, the night
previous. The deceased had gone out west on a harvest excursion a couple
of months ago and soon after arriving contracted typhoid fever which
later developed into acute tuberculosis which usually causes death within
a short time. A letter was received from the attending physician on
Wednesday informing the friends and saying that death was inevitable. He
asked for instructions regarding burial as he thought the authorities
would not allow the body sent East.
Being among strangers and dying was indeed a very sad position to be
in. On Thursday, N. F. Carruthers (This was most likely W. F. Carruthers
(147)) left for his brother's bedside hoping to reach there before the
spark of life had fled He was about 24 hours on his way when word of
George’s death was received here, and no doubt burial took place before
he arrived. The late George Carruthers was about 30 years of age, son of
Mr. Robert Carruthers (14) and was born here. He was married to Miss
Lancaster who died about two years ago and within a year from their
wedding day.

Serious Accident Narrowly Averted
A most miraculous escape was that of Mr Archie Carruthers and his
wife and Mr Herman Armstrong, a few days ago. Herman was moving the
household effects of Mr Carruthers to the late residence of Mr Wm. G.
Lowry, near Marathon. They had crossed the Mohr bridge on the town line,
and were passing over the approach to the bridge, which is very high, and
most dangerous, when on the grade which was covered with several feet of
water they were swept into the deep water in the gully below. Herman
showed great presence of mind and pluck as he tried in vain to get the
horses to draw out the load with the submerged trio. Failing in this,
while Mr Carruthers kept his own and his wife’s head above water by
standing on top of the high load. Mr Armstrong unhitched the horses and
got them to safety. He then found that Mr and Mrs Carruthers were again
in the water as the sleigh had sunk into a deep part. But Mr Armstrong
soon rescued them by getting to a wire fence on an elevation on the other
side of the gully. This they followed to safety, but Herman being a good
swimmer with difficulty reached the road bed. If he had been carried a
little further the turbulent Carp waters would no doubt have swept him
away as he was already becoming chilled through. It was 24 hours before
the sympathetic neighbours got the heavy load fished out.
