John Hopson Jean

John Hopson Jean was born in Pulaski County, Georgia in 1819 to John and Alcy Jean.

He served on the Grand Jury of the Heard County Superior Court, April Term of 1846.  Sometime in late 1846 or early 1847, John moved his family from Heard County, Georgia to DeSoto County, Mississippi.

It is believed that his younger brother, Darius Thomas Jean, traveled with the family to Mississippi, as Darius enlisted in Col. Pat Anderson's Company C, 1st Battalion, Mississippi Rifles at Hernando, DeSoto County, Mississippi on October 30, 1847. Another younger brother, Littleton R. Jean, is enumerated with John and his family in the 1850 DeSoto County census.

The Board of Police Records 1858-1868 shows that:

Appointed A. Dean overseer of Oxford Road from corner of Buford’s field to the forks of the road. Hands: H. M. Thompson, J. H. Jean, J. Dean, A. Stevens, A. Powers, J. H. Still.

Appointed Leaders of Patrol, District 2: J. H. Jean, W. O. Wallace, George L. Scott, Walker Wright, William Lewers, T. J. Downs.

In 1863 J. H. Jean paid personal property tax on 1 watch, 1 sword, and 1 slave.  John is listed in the DeSoto County Privilege License 1870-1871 as paying a $50 fee for an Auctioneer license.

After John's death in 1872 at the age of 53,  Tate County, Mississippi was formed on April 15, 1873 out of DeSoto, Marshall and Tunica Counties. John's property became a part of Tate County.

It is obvious from the following that little is known about what became of John and Elizabeth's children.  His Will shows an apparent rift with his oldest son, Jacob Thompson Jean.

I would like to thank Virgil and Betty Lou Foust Smyth for sharing information on Joseph Edward Jean's family of which Betty is a part.

Roy was orphaned at the age of 8.  He enlisted in the Navy in 1921 when he was 15, probably to have a place to sleep and food to eat.   He retired from the Navy as an Aviation Machinist Mate Chief.

Roy visited Dyer, Arkansas at the same time as his sister, Lena and her husband.  He stopped on his way out of town to talk to an old friend who was working in the yard.  He said "Oh, I wish I could stay here forever.  It is so peaceful."  Then, he just went down.  An ambulance was called, but by the time it arrived, he was gone.

Lena was orphaned by age 6 and passed around to brothers who were much older.  She was mistreated  by her brother's wife.  Finally, a kind neighbor lady, Mrs. Cottrell, took her in and raised her.

Lena was living in Wagoner, Oklahoma when she and John Foust met.  They moved to Arkansas City, Kansas, where they eventually bought a little house that had enough land around it to have a garden, orchard, a barn,  chicken house, and  a Jersey cow,  which provided for their growing family.

In August 1945, Lena was expecting twins.  The cow got out of the pen and she started after it.  The neighbor's children were always digging holes in their yard.  While chasing the cow, Lena stepped in a hole and fell, breaking her arm and going into premature labor.  Johnny died shortly after birth and Wanda died the next day.  The twins were buried head to foot in separate caskets in the same grave.  While Lena was recovering, the announcement was made that WW II was over.  She sat up on the side of the bed and said "Thank the Lord."
