1880 census shows him as a physician, age 43, born KY, both parents born in TN. Possibly the John King, age 14 shown in the 1850 census - as living with the Willilam INGLE family. We've recently learned that John's sister, Julia, married Samuel Ingles, son of William Ingles - the head of household (HH 1594) in the 1850 census. Heh. Bingo. John's mother died when he was just 5; making John the youngest. John and Julia's father, William, is shown in the 1850 census in HH 1550. Not next door but close by. - rhg

Know all men that I, E. S. King, do hereby make my last will and Testament. Being of sound mind and weak body. Realizing the certainty of Death.

Second, I will and desire the full payment of every debt I owe and hereby enjoin my wife and Executor for full payment of same.
Third, I will to my wife Nora S. King one roan mare known as Birtie. I will to my son, E. Sterling King, her colt by her side. I will to my Daughter, Lena May, one black horse known as Champ Clark. I will to my son Johnnie W. King, his grandFather's silver watch. I will to my son, Will F. King, my gold watch. I will to my son, E. Sterling King, my silver watch. I will to my daughter, Lena May King, all my letters, Pictures and Family history to have and to hold, copy, and to transmit to future generations. I will to my son, John W. King, one black Horse known as Rex. I will to my son, Will F. King, one gray horse known as Ted. It is my will and Desire that my wife, Nora S. King, become m executor and enter upon her office without bond.

Joseph Hawkins,

I Joseph Hawkins of the county of Greene and State of Tennessee, being of sound mind and memory, do make and publish this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all others by me at any time mead.

1st-It is my will that I be buried in a Christian like manner, and my funeral expenses be paid out of the first money that may come into the hands of my executor.

2nd-It is my will that all my just debts be paid;

3d-That after my debts are paid that my beloved wife Martha as long as she may remain my widow shall control my real and personal property to the best advantage to raise and educate our children and to use what may be necessary for that purpose.

4th-That what money I may be intitled to in the hands of my brother William and Phillip Hawkins after the expiration of the term of five years for which we have interest into a partnership, and my interest in the lands of which my father died seized and possessed, which is our fourth part, and any interest in the land of which my brother Thomas died seized and possessed, in Hamblin County, and any interest in the Branum land bought by myself and my brother William and Phillip Hawkins-all of which is to be invested in "good" land for my children.

5th-It is my will that all my children should be made equal in the division of my estate, both of the real and personal.

6th-It is my will, that my lands be so farmed so as not to impoverish the land, but rather so as to improve it.

7th-It is my will that all my children should all receive about the same in the way of education-and that as they arrive at the age of twenty one years that they may be assisted out of my estate what she may think excess any, but not go beyound what would be their part.

8th-It is my will that what surplus stock and grain may be on hand next fall and is not necessary for carrying on the family be sold to assist in making the last payment on the "Ferry Farm".

9th-I do appoint my wife Martha Hawkins my executrix to carry out my will and in case of her death or marriage, ten of my sons Duddy J. Hawkins and John (K) Hawkins shall have arrived at the age of twenty one years together with my brother William Hawkins are appointed my executors to take charge of the estate for my heirs. And in the event that my widow Martha Hawkins should marry then she shall only receive of my estate as though I should have died intestate.

10th-It is my will that if Lemuel Crosby and his wife Nancy Crosby and Wm. Hawkins and Philip Hawkins think it best to make private sale of the lands that I own in common with them, including the farm inherited from father in Greene County, and the one from Thomas Hawkins in Hamblin County and if any brothers William Hawkins and Philip Hawkins shall think it best to make sale of the Brannum land, then Martha Hawkins my executrix is fully authorized and directed to join with them in the sale and conveyance and vest any interst in said lands the same as I could do if living and doing it myself.

BORN TN. (Other Hawkins family researchers insist he was born in MD) Shown with him is wife, Mary, and 4 of his sons (assumed). Also living with them is a Susan FRY, age 16 and born in TN. Adopted? - rhg
