FOOTNOTES
Original basis from RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project Captain William Dare of Cohansey 6August 2001; original sources for this website include D. J. Dangerfield Manuscript Info: Material gathered by D. J. Dangerfield from trip To Lyme Regis, published Mar 1999; Dare Family Hist (1939) by Nellie Grosscup LEDDON; Mark & Sarah Ewing by Sarah Weaver REED; notes of Roberta June Hitchner ERICHSON; Cohansey Baptist Cemetery by Carl L. West; Cumberland County Burials by Carl L. West
The record shows that his wife's name was Hannah; the assumption is made that because the will of Thomas Abbott names his "son" Benoni Dare, that he is the son-in-law and that therefore the maiden name of his wife is Abbott; confirmed at The Belknap Family DARE Family. Another source, Casto Story and Collections - 2000 Notes and References, lists his wife as Mary Abbott with a marriage date circa 1720. Based on the will of Thomas Abbott, it is presumed that his daughter married Benoni Dare prior to the date of that will--Dec. 14, 1718.
NewJersey Marriages by Patricia M. Bergener at njmard03.txt "... 9 May 1760. ... Benoni DARE... obtained license of marriage for himself and for Clemens WAITHMAN, widow, of Greenwich afores'd"; and Hitchner notes at Hitchner Temporary Webpage - pafn10 - Generated by Personal Ancestral File; at Marriage Records from New Jersey Archives, Benoni Dare married Clemens Withneau; will of Benoni Dare names wife Clemens
NewJersey Marriages by Patricia M. Bergener at njmard03.txt "Reuben DARE... obtained license of marriage for himself and for Rhoda STEVENS of the County of af'd, widow..."
At Hitchner Temporary Webpage - pafg10 - Generated by Personal Ancestral File, birth date is 1706; marriage date is Dec. 14, 1718 but this would suggest that he was only 12 years old when he married.... The NOTES discuss the discrepancy at some length. Currently, I have decided to use the marriage date while preserving a birth date in the early 1690's.
TENTH GENERATION places birth of Benoni Dare in 1706 and the children by order of birth as: Reuben, Elkanah, William, James, Abiel, Elinore, Elizabeth, Rachel, John
Benoni DARE lists the children of Benoni and Keziah Dare in order of birth as: John, Elizabeth, Reuben, Eleanor, Elkanah, Abiel, William, Rachel, James Ayre noting the source as "The Descendants of Captain William Dare" Vol. 3, Compiled by Robert Dallas DARE / Historian- Edward Everett GROSSCUP, Gloucester County Historical Society Woodbury, NJ 1995; in other sources, only Rachel Dare and James Ayre Dare are listed as the children of Benoni and Keziah Dare. The Will of Benoni Dare lists children Elkanah, William, Abiel, Reuben, James, Elaner, Elizabeth and Rachel.
Cumberland County NJ was formed in 1748 from Salem County. Events prior to 1748 use the Salem County designation while those after 1748 reflect Cumberland County.
